Review of The Power of Kroll by Jonathan_

13 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Honestly the plot and characters are pretty weak but I have to give them points for probably the best giant monster encounter in the classic series thus far

It starts off pretty cool but I think it ultimately gets boring by the end.

Review of The Stones of Blood by Jonathan_

Who doesn't love a good court scene? This story has a lot of neat stuff, blood sucking rocks, invisible lawyers, and druid larpers. Its not super well done but it is pretty entertaining

Review of The Pirate Planet by Jonathan_

12 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I can tell this was written by Douglass Adams. The premise is actually pretty cool and the characters are all kinda goofy and over the top. I think this could have been better as a 6-parter though, the ending seemed to resolve a bit abruptly

The Doctor seems kind of out of character in this one

Review of The Sentinels of the New Dawn by Jonathan_

I loved this story, it felt very much like a James Bond with time travel. It was nice for Liz to get a good sendoff as well

Review of Dumb Waiter by Jonathan_

8 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

It has some really good moments between Leela and 2’s crew but it’s held back now how mediocre the monster plot is. I especially like Jamie and Leela testing their strength against each other and the Doctor being faced with the fact that he will have to face the Time Lords again eventually

The monster plot is just not very interesting and the voice of ms dewinter is so goddamn annoying that I hated every second of it, especially when it interrupts the actual good parts.

Review of The Ribos Operation by Jonathan_

8 July 2025

The TARDIS crew doesn't actually have a ton to do in this episode but the side characters are a lot of fun and made it enjoyable to watch

Review of Frostfire by Jonathan_

This review contains spoilers!

This story blurs the line between a gothic horror/weird tale and a sci-fi and I really enjoyed it. The first half was kind of boring but it really picks up later on

Review of The Invasion of Time by Jonathan_

7 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I liked this story, though the latter 2 parts are not as good as the first 4. The Doctor is acting strangely thoughout the start of this episode, getting himself declared president on Gallifrey and inviting in invaders. Only when he gets inside a lead sealed room does he reveal that his mind is invaded by the Vardans, and he is leading them on to find out where their home planet. Once he foils their scheme, the Sontarans show up, and this is where the episode starts going downhill. The Sontarans are trying to track down the Doctor and get the Key from him and they chase him around the inside of his TARDIS, which is kinda neat but ultimately boring.

Review of Underworld by Jonathan_

7 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

This one starts off promising but once we get off the spaceship it's just boring. Especially since we just got a revolution arc that was way better in the previous episode.

Review of The Sun Makers by Jonathan_

6 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Peak

Easily the funniest episode of classic so far. The Doctor starts a revolution against cartoonishly evil bureaucrats. This episode is just such a fun trip. It's not particularly deep or emotional really, its just everybody seems to be having a blast playing these characters and its full of great humor and banter (I was dying when the Doctor called the collector a "Usurian").

Without context this could easily be something straight of out the Hitchhiker's Guide. 5/5

This starts off really promising with a really creepy skull and implications on the origin of humanity but the ending doesnt quite pull it off

Review of The Invisible Enemy by Jonathan_

5 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Kind of a boring story to be honest, it starts off kind of cool with an unknown enemy infecting everybody but it's just downhill from there plot-wise. The real highlight of this story is K-9 who is delightful

Review of The Top of the Tree by Jonathan_

5 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Awesome story featuring that one guy from the Christmas Carol episode

The Doctor is investigating a distress signal and lands on an enormous tree. He then has to figure out where he is and what the danger is, and it gets crazy. At the base of the tree he finds a pool of boiling sap, and at the top he finds insects and empty space, the tree is just free floating and is huge enough to have its own atmosphere.

The villagers traditions are very interesting to see play out (they protect the young and mothers based on these from the threat they don't understand) and the ending twist is pretty funny as well.

Review of Horror of Fang Rock by Jonathan_

5 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Easily the best 4 story so far. The TARDIS appears at a lighthouse that is under attack by an unknown force.

We get to see the Rutans for the first time (though their design is kind of goofy), and the whole episode has an air of gothic horror to it. Just an amazingly atmostpheric story.

Review of The Talons of Weng-Chiang by Jonathan_

5 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

This episode manages to still be pretty good despite the racism. People are disapearing and the Doctor is investigating a Chinese magician. This really feels like a Sherlock Holmes story rather than a Doctor Who episode, right down to the outfits.

Li H'sen Chang is the one trying to stop the Doctor for most of the story and he is probably the most interesting character here (other than Leela maybe). It really is a shame they did not get a Chinese actor to play this role because it's really held back by the fact that it's a white actor in yellowface.

Leela's development in this story and Jago & Litefoot are probably my favorite aspects. Litefoot teaches Leela about Victorian manners and Leela teaches Litefoot how to eat meat like her tribe does (which was very entertaining) and she seems to get less murdery as the story goes. Jago & Litefoot's banter was great as well.

Review of The Face of Evil by Jonathan_

4 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Fun episode, the Doctor's past adventure accidently creates a big problem on this planet. The theme of superstition and faith plays out pretty well in this episode

Also we are introduced to Leela, who is very cool and very murdery

Review of The Deadly Assassin by Jonathan_

4 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Really good episode, the Doctor has to solve a murder on Gallifrey. We see more of Gallifrey in this episode than any so far and its great. We get a sense of the Doctor's role in the society that we did not have before.

The Master is back, this time as a weird skull face guy. The duel between he (or his henchman I guess) and the Doctor is really cool as well.

Review of The Hand of Fear by Jonathan_

Really cool villain in this one. Also we see a species that evolved an alternate type of regeneration which is interesting.

Sarah Jane's sendoff feels kind of abrupt though

Review of The Doctor’s Wife by Jonathan_

2 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Pretty unique villain in this episode, and we get to see the TARDIS gang fight against the TARDIS itself (possessed by House)

The Doctor has to rebuild a TARDIS (with some fun references to 3) and hang out with an embodiment of the TARDIS who discusses some of their relationship.

Review of The Curse of the Black Spot by Jonathan_

2 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I gotta say, now that I knew who Henry Every was and what he did beforehand it made this episode a lot better for me. The plot of the alien medical ship accidentally causing issues and abducting people is ok (though the Empty Child did it better).
