I had very little memory of this story, which gave it an initial thrill, the first so far from the new series where I couldn’t tell you the last time I’d watched it, but could be confident it was over 10 years ago. There is a reason I haven’t rushed back for another helping of this story, it is the stinker of series 5. A dull melodrama, the emotions of which provide very little impact. Based off of this and the equally uninspiring 42, I think it would be fair to say that Chris Chibnall had yet to find his feet on writing for Doctor Who. Though I will give an honorable mention for his high quality episodes of Torchwood series 2, especially Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and Fragments.

The Silurians look great. They get a bit of a raw deal though. They conceded nothing and had to concede pretty much everything. So much for the peace talks, which I feel are done much better with the Zygons later. I’m not sure why they were given those infrequently used attack tongues, or the ability to harness unplugged monitors on the surface of the Earth.

Rory’s sudden death, a second episode in a row was either a bad idea, or it was realised poorly. It was tacked on to the end of the episode, when with all the breaking into the crust of the Earth, could have been better baked into the plot. The idea of Amy forgetting Rory is good - high drama.

I guess, similar to 42, I didn’t care about any of the guest cast in the end. There were lots of characters, none of which were memorable, some of which had paper thin character motivations. Nothing about it needed to be a 2 parter either. I could easily imagine this being slimmed down to a much more satisfactory plot. I’d have nominated The Beast Below perhaps as one that could have been expanded out further.

Meh.

Okay this was fantastic. On my first watch I didn't really appreciate it enough. Not really in the mood for a big review so I'll just say that I loved how it puts into the screen the phrase "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind".

I was hooked seeing how everything the Doctor was doing to broker peace between the two species was let down by those that are "so much less than the best of humanity."

Plus, this acts as a sort of sequel to the first Silurians serial with the Third Doctor, which I really liked.

New Who Review #69

Cold Blood

This wasn't as good as part 1. I felt like part 2 was more boring and a bit more political. The doctor trying to get the earth to be shared between Human & Silurian is good on paper but when on screen it does feel a bit ehh. The mum is such a nightmare. We could've got somewhere with the Silurians if it wasn't for her and I hate it. The Light from the crack in time catching up with Rory is so sad even though he will be back again because he is literally Rory the roman dying is literally his hobby. The idea of if you can remember something it can come back is sort of used here with the doctor trying to get Amy to remember Rory after he was erased from existence. Overall a weaker second part to an ok story. 5/10

This was a very nice episode!! Bit confused by why some of it feels unfinished — like there was someone else who was supposed to be there? Amy and the Doctor were amazing as usual! She's a great companion.

In all seriousness: I find the idea of erasing Rory very interesting and can't wait to see how that plays out.

Good episode

Having seen Petwee's run-in with the Silurians its an interesting contrast. At least what went down in this one is better than what happened to their predecessors, maybe in 1000 years we'll have humanity and silurians co-existing

ELDANE: We lived on the surface of the planet long before you did. Our sole purpose has been to return to our rightful place.

NASREEN: And we've got a planet that can't already sustain the people who live there. And you want to add a whole other species to drain resources

ELDANE [OC]: As I sat there that day across the table from the humans, the future of both species and of our beloved planet Earth rested in our hands. But as the discussions went on, I began to despair about whether we would ever find any common ground. As ambassadors for our species we all had too much to lose.

AMY: So, what about the areas that aren't habitable to us? Australian outback, Sahara desert, Nevada plains. They're all deserted.

NASREEN: Yes, fine, but what happens when their population grows and breeds and spreads? And anyway, what benefit does humanity get, and how will we ever sell this to people on the surface?

ELDANE: If I could get a word in, maybe I could tell you. You give us space, we can bring new sources of energy, new methods of water supply, new medicines, scientific advances. We were a great civilisation. You provide a place for us on the surface, we'll give you knowledge and technology beyond humanity's dreams. If we work together, this planet could achieve greatness.

NASREEN: Okay. Now I'm starting to see it.

(Cold Open)

ELDANE [OC]: This is the story of our planet, Earth. Of the day a thousand years past when we came to share it with a race know as Humanity. It is the story of the Doctor, who helped our races find common ground, and the terrible losses he suffered. It is the story of our past and must never be forgotten.

[City]

DOCTOR: This place is enormous and deserted. The majority of the race are probably still asleep. We need to find Amy. Looking for heat signature anomalies.
NASREEN: But Doctor, how can all this be here? I mean, these plants.
DOCTOR: Must be getting closer to the centre of the city.
NASREEN: You're sure this is the best way to enter?
DOCTOR: Front door approach. Definitely. Always the best way.
