Synopsis

It’s L/Wren Mrs Constance Clarke’s birthday - and Flip is determined to make it an anniversary to remember.

The futuristic colony of Formicia, where the pampered populace pass their days in endless leisure, seems the perfect place for a ‘Wren Party’. But all is not as it seems. Looking down from the Middle, the skyscraping tower that ascends as far as the colony ceiling, Formicia’s overseers can see that the Doctor doesn’t fit in - and it’s not just his coat that makes him conspicuous...

“The End is the Beginning,” say the propaganda-like posters all over Formicia. Because to be part of this perfect society comes at a price. And the Doctor's already in arrears.

Previous Story: The Behemoth

I absolutely love a story that takes an interesting premise and just runs with it and this was absolutely that. The idea of a society split up into beginning, middle, and end was really unique and almost seemed like a bit of commentary on our own lives. The first half was a bit slow, taking the time to set everything up but once it gets going it's absolutely brilliant and no time is wasted.

The performances here are stellar, there were some really gut-wrenching scenes where parents had to resist killing their own children and it was horrifying. I really didn't expect the story to go the places that it did. The biggest twist is almost reminiscent of The Enemy of the World but on a way larger scale. I'm a bit disappointed the team is split up again here, but they're all given a chance to shine individually so I'm not that bothered. Brilliant story, genuinely brilliant.

I really enjoyed this one! The plot kept branching off into very unexpected directions, and it had some poignant things to say about aging and our different responsibilities in life. Great performances, and you're not going to be able to guess where it's going next.

The Doctor, Constance and Flip arrive on a planet where the people are segregated by age.

As with a lot of stories it takes the whole first episode to actually discover the plot. With it being Constance's birthday, our hero's get seperated, each one having to work out what exactly is going on.

Episode 2 almost has four endings, the Doctor cries 'Noooo..." and sounds as if its going to lead into the theme, but carries on, but it does a similar thing again another couple of times.

The idea that, in reaching a certain age you then have to go from being a care free youth to a dedicated worker, is OK, but, doesn't hold up to scrutiny, you may be 35 but you might also have a baby, or young dependants. There are also one or two coincidences (Constance birthday and being the exact age to be in a different group than Flip)- but in all fairness no that much more than any other story.

But I enjoyed it, I have to admint I listened in dribs an drabs, since I didn't have the time and its not the best way to enjoy the audios.
