Review of The Skull of Sobek by sedepliss

5 February 2025

This one is just okay. Nothing horrible, nothing too boring. Some good lines here or there. A kind of ridiculous plot. Blue planet with blue people. It's interesting.

If you want to skip, you could.

Review of Human Resources Part 2 by sedepliss

29 January 2025

Part 1 was excellent, very funny and intriguing. Part 2 was almost as good! Great wrap up to this series.

I think these episodes in particular really highlight Lucie. I think she's excellent now! I didn't vibe with her at the beginning of the series, but I've loved her banter with the 8th doctor and finally getting some answers to her mystery with the Time Lords!

Review of No More Lies by sedepliss

28 January 2025

Underdeveloped.

Honestly, it could've been a good script if it had better explained and introduced practically everything in the story. I didn't read the synopsis before listening, but had to towards the beginning because I had no idea what was happening. It jumped around too much, and just dropped us in the middle of the adventure. I thought I had the tracks mixed up!

Once we get off the ship, it's easier to understand. And an okay story, nothing great really. Good cliffhanger for next time though! That's about it.

Review of Phobos by sedepliss

28 January 2025

Wow! People don't like this one, do they??

Me, on the other hand, I had fun with it! It's nothing too amazing, but it's fun. You've got some great side characters, an interesting concept to start with Phobos, and I think this one is funny! I enjoyed the unraveling of this mystery.

I also, in particular, enjoyed the 8th doctor in this. I liked his speech. I liked that Lucie is starting to get more of an idea of just how ancient the Doctor is, how much terror he's seen.

This is a fun, inconsequential, run of the mill Doctor Who story. That's all it had to be, and frankly all I expected from it. I had a smile on my face most of the listen, and I kept going "people don't like this one?! What??"

But, hey, I'm glad I liked it. It's one of those moments of "I'm glad I made up my own mind about this". Because truly you have to. I've skipped stories before because of low ratings, only to come back to them later and find, oh, I liked it, or it wasn't as bad as it seemed.

I wasn't very into Blood of the Daleks or Horror of Glam Rock, but Immortal Beloved and Phobos has me interested again on continuing this season. I look forward to more!

Review of Blood of the Daleks Part 1 by sedepliss

26 January 2025

This one is just fine. As soon as you get an idea of what the Daleks are doing, it's kind of like a waiting game until they finally get on with it. Which makes sense, this is Part 1 of the story. But it's not very interesting to me until later into Part 1.

Guest cast give good performances, as does McGann.

I'm not immediately compelled by Lucie, but interested to see how her journey unfolds with the Doctor.

There's a good cliffhanger here, and the story is good, it's just somewhat slow. I'm expecting more out of Part 2.

Review of Cyberwoman by sedepliss

Cyberwoman

7/10

Having rewatched this one again... Wow!

It's a very interesting episode, and the plot is engaging throughout. But it's very dark and horrifying!

The Cyberwoman design doesn't quite work for me, but I give it some leeway because the plot is decent.

Ianto dragging his half-converted girlfriend from a conversion chamber to Torchwood, setting up everything to keep her alive? That's so awful to live through! How long has she been down there?!

I like this as a character piece on Ianto, especially since we really don't know much about him other than he serves the coffee.

There's several times I was thinking "this can't get any worse, can it?" and it did!! Especially that poor pizza girl...

The only thing that bugs me about this episode is the consequences for Ianto. Shouldn't he be fired after this? Memory wiped of Torchwood? Some consequence? I don't recall anything about this after this episode. And here, at the end, it's not well addressed.

The perodactyl attacking the Cyberwoman? Ridiculous, I kinda love it.

And GDL's acting? It's pretty good. He plays it very traumatized, desperate. I don't get some complaints I've seen about his acting. I really enjoyed the scene between him and Barrowman holding him at gunpoint before sending him in to finish things.

I enjoyed watching it, and there's certainly other nitpicks and plot issues to point out, but I don't care enough to.

I think I'll need a short break from Torchwood after this one cause that was SO dark.

Review of Ghost Machine by sedepliss

Ghost Machine

Now THIS should have been episode 2. The alien device is fascinating and used well throughout. We get some great moments for Owen this episode. I'd forgotten how it ended, but I really did like this ending. It's not quite how either Bernie nor Gwen expected it to go. Great episode, definitely watch.

Review of Day One by sedepliss

S1E2

Day One

4/10

This is where I could see a lot of people turning off Torchwood after this episode. It's not very good. I like the bits with it being Gwen's first day on the job. But the alien and their motivation? Ugh... Kind of painful to sit through. It's honestly not that interesting to follow either, feels like a waste of a plot for the 2nd episode. Though the Doctor Who spinoff can now be "mature", this is more juvenile if anything. Skip this one.

Review of Everything Changes by sedepliss

Everything Changes

And here we have it - the beginning of Torchwood. The mystery of Torchwood is setup, we follow Gwen's journey, and everything moves at a good pace. On rewatch, it holds up. Really loved the opening in the rain with Gwen watching the Torchwood gang do their thing. There's not quite enough to link Susie to the murders for the audience to figure it out before it's shown to us, but nonetheless it's an interesting confrontation between her and Gwen. Overall, solid start to the series!

Quintessentially everything I love about Doctor Who! Love Martha & The Doctor's relationship, love the monsters, and the unique setting. It's a comfort episode of mine.
