Review of Lucky Day by rainbownixie

3 May 2025

This review contains spoilers!

A bit underwhelming in comparison to the other episodes but the second half is so good I don't even care that much. Not much to say besides that we truly need these types of commentaries with how society is going rn, f Conrad, and love love love Ruby and Kate! Honestly, already knew the twist bc it was pretty obvious, but nevertheless you don't expect it to be so... SO MUCH. Loved 15s last scene and hope we can get more of this protective side.

Review of The Reign of Terror by rainbownixie

24 April 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I expected a tiny bit more action in this historical but other than that I think it's alright! I like the pacing to be slow but sometimes it was... Too much. Even so, I do adore the concept of them landing in the French Revolution. Both Barbara and The Doctor shine SO MUCH here, they literally own the historicals!! The beginning and the ending are probably the best parts but perhaps it's losing the other episodes what makes it a bit harder to watch in the middle.

Review of The Sensorites by rainbownixie

24 April 2025

I actually love the pacing even if slow! The story might not be over-complex but I do love Susan in this one and showing her struggles with the Doctor too. She's showing more independence and free will here and I appreciate that so much for her. The other characters are of course also great, but to me, Susan is the highlight here.

Review of The Good Life by rainbownixie

24 April 2025

Not my favorite story out of the 3 but definitely a good analysis for the Master's character and I always enjoy seeing him slowly turning even more unhinged

Review of Lux by rainbownixie

19 April 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I LOVED this episode. Everything about it. The animation truly is the highlight more than the plot itself, but it's so so enjoyable. Belinda and the Doctor's dynamic is unmatched and their chemistry is beautifully written. Hoping for more Nursedoc over the season <3 The fourth wall break was better than I imagined to be (bc I thought it wouldn't be good at all). I get the themes they were trying to touch even if it did feel a bit weird and it was genuinely beautiful how they stayed alive even after the Doctor left <3 As a fan of animation, the 50s stories and Nursedoc, this was sooo good. Solid good.

Review of The Robot Revolution by rainbownixie

12 April 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I still have to get used to the fast pacing and I wished the episodes just had more time to develop the ideas, but overall, great introduction to Belinda as the new companion. I just adore her so much that the plot itself wasn't even that crucial to me. I think they had a lot of ideas during the episode and it was a bit messy to put them together BUT the concept is great. The highlight is definitely Belinda and her dynamic with The Doctor. She has the perfect attitude to both have a lovely relationship with him and ground him when things go south. They could've just made the robots inherently evil and yet they blamed everything on Belinda's incel, toxic ex-boyfriend and I love that so, so much. A selfless nurse who stands up for herself, fights back and whose core trait is to take care of others, being so brave yet obviously scared? She's my absolute beloved now. Not a perfect episode but a good opener for the season!! I can't wait to see more of her <3

Review of The Wonderful Doctor of Oz by rainbownixie

4 April 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I... I have no words to explain how much this book means to me. As a very passionate trans Oz/Wicked and 13th Doctor fan, this has changed my life (for Good).

I don't even know where to start! This whole thing is such a beautiful homage to L. Frank Baum's creation. The references to the book and the movie are just so sweet and entertaining to see as a fan of both! But the way they handle the narrative, creating parallels between each character and their Oz counterpart to analyze their personas... Incredible. Wonderful. Ryan's kindness is so, so highlighted here along with his love for Graham (taking care of him all the time, hurting so much as he has to helplessly watch him lose himself), Yaz (the way their chemistry is unmatched, always looking after the other) and The Doctor (protecting her whenever he can because she needs it too). Graham's intellect is so underrated in my opinion, and I love how this book keeps on reminding us (even when he can't be himself) that he's so needed in the fam. And Yaz <3 My beloved Yaz <3 (you can tell she's my favorite companion tbh) Her courage is something I have always admired about her character because it always shows up when needed the most, even when she's the most scared of all. I think that is why the Doctor trusts her so, so much and one of the things she needs is to rely on Yaz's courage more. Well, the Doctor needs to rely on them more, and that's exactly what this book shows too. She'd feel useless if those skills were taken away from her, but they're taken away from her fam because that's exactly where her strength relies. It's also such a majestic, endearing insight into the fam. It warms my heart.

But the highlight and MVP, of course, is Dorothy (and K9/2-2, too!). At first I wasn't expecting anything to be confirmed. I kept wondering if she was just heavily trans coded or if this was a real thing happening. To my surprise, it was the latter, and I have never been this happy. I already loved her even before realizing she was trans. Her storyline is so heartbreaking, but nobody's doing it like her! A trans girl running away from her abusive household to find her dream in LA and finding herself traveling with the Doctor and finding her strength to come out as herself in a land where everything is possible and she can finally be the bookworm and reader she always ought to be. Honestly, my dream, too. A trans girl looking up to The Doctor and Yaz is the peak of queer positivity and support. Now this is a clear example of how crucial it is to befriend your fellow queers!!! God, if I had just had a book like this a few years back... I think every DW trans fan needs to read this. As well as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz because I can assure you, it is so meant to be read by queer people.

My only criticism would be that I expected more from Missy and 13 interacting. Or more of Missy as a whole. They have exactly the same dynamic as Glinda and Elphaba in Wicked, and I can't stop thinking about it now. If Dorothy is, well, Dorothy, and the others are the rest of the cast... The Doctor has to be the Good Witch! And I adore that, so, so much. Wicked's Glinda is very similar to her, in my opinion, but I need to expand on that thought on my own later...

Overall, extremely entertaining. Read in just one night and now I wish it had been longer. Friendly reminder that trans women are women! Trans rights are human rights! The Doctor is a trans icon. And oh, Dorothy, you will always, always be loved. (Never forget to be kind, brave, clever and, most importantly, yourself!)

Review of The Clockwork Swan by rainbownixie

4 April 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Honestly, as someone who did theatre and is still a theatre nerd, I can clearly tell the Master is too. Not the most complex adventure ever but doing all of this out of mere fun of killing and to fake an accent is the most Master thing the Master can do. He is a maniac but it literally comes hand in hand with being a theatre kid.

Review of The Unquiet Dead by rainbownixie

2 April 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Honestly, the best part of this episode is to see how necessary it is for Doctors and companions to argue and clash. Rose and Nine have such a lovely relationship and yet they manage to have different moral views affecting their dynamic without breaking it and I love it. It's a beautiful episode as a whole and the cast is amazing, but the one thing in my mind when I think about this episode is always Rose and the Doctor about to die and just how happy they are that at least they're by each other's side. How worth it it was, the moments they had together. Of course they obviously get out of this one as they often will (not... always...) but the foreshadowing goes crazy.

Review of The End of the World by rainbownixie

2 April 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Rose having the whole "damn I just ran off with some man I know nothing about to SPACE" crisis is something so overlooked imo. She remains an extremely complex character and despite being the most popular NuWho companion, I believe she is underrated when it comes to her writing. Rewatching this show is like living a whole different experience, knowing what will happen and what happened. Nine's reactions to the mention of home and the war makes my heart break into a million pieces. On the other hand, just an awesomely written, iconic episode. Toxic by Britney you will always be famous.

Review of Rose by rainbownixie

2 April 2025

As I rewatch I'm realizing how good this first episode is to introduce yourself to this universe. Charming first adventure with sooo much unmatched chemistry between nine and Rose. Everything is balanced and I will forever remember this episode with so much love <3 It has everything you'd expect from DW and I just adore nine, so, so, so much. Wishing he'd had more seasons every time I think about him. Probably the worst episode of the season and that's the highest compliment I can give because it only gets better even with a great start!

Review of The Aztecs by rainbownixie

2 April 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Barbara facing the "why travel through time and space if we can't change anything" dilemma is good enough on its own, but to make her the focus of the episode and show various traits of her character at the same time is just perfect. The sub-plots were so entertaining and endearing (the Doctor is such a gentleman it warms my heart. Ian remains iconic showing his skills. And Susan fighting for her rights to choose how to live and who to love?? She's my dearest) but Barbara carried the whole thing. Not a bad thing to say about this serial, tbh. Historicals are often my favorites and I'm glad they're also Barbara's time to shine because I adore her.

Review of Self-Help by rainbownixie

31 March 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Thought this would be only a little funny story about the Spy Master constantly having breakdown after breakdown after personality crisis, but even if the humor is quite obviously there, the main subject about his inner demons (of course) is treated brilliantly. I appreciate this intrsopection, as it explains this Master's views on Missy and what happened to become this new regeneration. As per the story itself, making the Master basically go through therapy is hilarious but so, so needed. He's beyond insane and deranged and that's why I love him so much. There's something about this Master being so psychotic most of the time that his raw emotions and thoughts are crystal clear, even if he refuses to admit it. In all honesty, I'd love anything that had to do with him but this is genuinely so good.

Review of The Keys of Marinus by rainbownixie

31 March 2025

Just started this season and it's definitely my favorite serial for now. And even if I find better ones, it'll for sure stay with me as still one of my favorites. Coming here after watching NuWho, this structure reminds me so much of "Flux"! And I love that since it's also one of my favorite seasons. Every episode is a new adventure. So much fun and with an intriguing plot. All their characters have their little moments and times to shine, and I truly appreciate that <3

Review of Marco Polo by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I genuinely thought it'd be tedious and tiring to watch this, since it's lost, but that wasn't at all the case! It's such an interesting historical. Tbh, my favorite thing about it must be Barbara. She shines in this one, and I'm so glad she does and shows her bravery and the way she can and will act on her own if she desires to prove her beliefs and protect others. On the other hand, Susan and Ping-cho's storyline was so sweet and I have a weak spot for dynamics like that. Plot-wise overall is also great but I preferred the girls in this one!

Review of The Edge of Destruction by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

This review contains spoilers!

This one's easy for me just because I love these types of plots. Would've even liked a longer serial for this one! The whole mystery around the situation ending up being such a simple answer feels perfect to me. Something absurd and at the same time so interesting, just what this show is. I'm weak for bottle episodes that force characters to interact and carry the whole thing. The Doctor's dynamic with, well, everyone is marvelous. His personality clash with Ian? The way he ends up being so fond of Barbara? And, in general, all of his love for Susan... Simple two-parter that actually shows a lot of things about them <3

Review of The Daleks by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

I had been told that it'd be tedious to watch this, but even if it did feel a bit long, it's nothing too bothersome. Very funny to see people nowadays complaining about this show being "too woke" when it began with progressive storylines like these. It's not world-changing but it is very telling of what DW is about. Honorary mention to Ian always being the hero and protecting everyone while also arguing constantly with The Doctor, he's just amazing. The Daleks are iconic, as always, btw.

Review of An Unearthly Child by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

Started Classic Who when I felt like I needed more after finishing NuWho, and I must say this is a great way to begin the story! I couldn't wait to properly meet Susan after all the mentions of her, and I find her so so so endearing and sweet. Perfect description of a neurodivergent teenager, tbh. It's a great introduction to the characters and both Ian and Barbara and the way their personalities clash with The Doctor's are so enjoyable. Seeing the first Doctor after knowing what comes next is so much fun. I love the inherent traits of his personality and I can't wait to see more of him.

Review of The Last King of Camelot by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

This review contains spoilers!

So it's a tiny bit less interesting than the last two, but still great! King Arthur is certainly a character that I can't stand, but I guess that's the point. Guinevere, on the other hand?? She shines SO MUCH in this one and I'm glad they gave her the time to be a star. Lancelot will always be my favorite character, though, he's just the peak of comedy here and also very cute in general. Rory basically inventing democracy? Perfect. Making a woman "king"? Even better.

The finale and his goodbye to Lancelot is actually emotional. I didn't think they'd make him so fond of him in the end, since he's been bothered by Lancelot's presence so much, but I think that was just part of the comedy and what reflects their friendship is all the times they've helped each other. Rory truly, genuinely, needed a friend.

Utterly heartbroken for the obvious unrequited love but Lancelot being so, so explicitly gay for Rory in the sweetest of ways was definitely a highlight for me. In my head, Rory is never beating the Bisexual allegations. And I love Amyrory but... Y'know he deserved a kiss, idc. I'm open-minded. Let's go, gay knights, let's go.

Review of The Glowing Warrior by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I keep saying that his dynamic with Lancelot is the best part of all of this. The whole plot at the beginning wasn't as strong as it was in the end, but that just means it got better and I appreciate that! The twist is funny, yeah, whatever, but Rory genuinely being pissed at being separated from the Pandorica? Rory's plot hidden under the main "Glowing Warrior" quest? Chef's kiss. Love to see him angry and exhasperated. It's a nice, complex side of his protective self, while also keeping his loving and nurturing nature. Rory always my beloved, but Lancelot is the MVP only because I just adore him so much.

Review of The Once and Future Nurse by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

Not much to say except that I can't physically listen to this in public because I just start laughing out of nowhere and I fear people will look at me weird...

Somehow the comedy is even better than last time. Maybe it's because I'm a fan of a more medieval style! Seeing him struggle with expressions and the setting is hilarious, but even more his dynamic with Lancelot. Easily the best character here. He's so endearing and his infatuation with Rory is splendid. I would, too, fall for him. Rory being so unaware of this at the beginning is even funnier and so on point for him! He said Amy would've loved being a Goddess in Rome, but I just know she would've loved even more to see him in this situation. Also, there's nothing, and I mean NOTHING better than seeing him acting as the nurse he is. I would listen to him healing people all day long.

Review of I, Rorius by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I'm aware I am biased keeping in mind my favorite companion is Rory and anything that has to do with him will instantly be perfect to me but... "I, Rorius" shows SO much about him and his personality outside of the Doctor and his direct dynamic with Amy that I completely lose my mind over it. Maybe it's because it's easy comedy but it's just, overall, so, so funny. And when it isn't, the dramatic moments or introspection of Rory's character is great. It's not like they have all the time in the world to do so, but I think that, at least, the pacing is both easy to follow and has enough depth to keep me interested. Side characters are also nice but Anna is definitely the best one. Got attached to her, even :( <3

Tbh, despite the plot being simple, there are so many moments I find endearing and great character work for Rory! We see him struggle in a position of power when he clearly despises the idea of anyone being above others (constant theme with his character) and can't lead properly, not because he couldn't or doesn't have the charm or ability, but because he hates the concept of it and how others react to him so submissively. He keeps on saying Amy would be a better leader than him and that's why he makes this Goddess figure for/about her, not only to excuse himself and, you know, as an obvious way to show his love, but because he keeps leaning into her every time (also, I KNOW he obviosuly makes her "the Goddess of Ponds and other bodies of water" due to the last name, but I can't help thinking it suits the situation so well. It's an easy way to be immersive with sounds, showing the serenity and peace thinking about Amy in his loneliness brings him. Helps him self-reflect, too. Not to mention the whole journey and renewal he goes through at the time). She's his strentgh. Even in their own relationship, it's not that he is submissive because he just is like that or Amy is more than him. It's because he's a lover and a caretaker and not a fighter or a leader. He could, but he just doesn't want to nor isn't. The mere mention of Amy constantly and how much he misses her is enough for me to LOVE this piece. Amyrory owns my heart, what can I say?

I love to see him show so much kindness and his nurturing personality to Rome but especially to Anna!!! I adore Anna!! Such a great addition to the story. She's funny and sweet and has amazing chemistry with Rory. Would've been an awesome friendship if it wasn't for the fact that he can't stay. Easy comedy but I kept laughing at the chickens and ducks just because Rory couldn't kill them. My guy is just too peaceful. In general, the whole plot is just a way to show Rory's personality here, and it's more noticeable in this Audio than the last two. This ending is probably the best one and left me a bit heartbroken for Anna, but mostly just... Feeling so much love for Rory and the adoration he has for Amy. It's so overwhelming. I just need to congratulate all of the actors for this one.

Started this just because I missed Rory and now I do it even more. He makes me want to rewatch over and over again!

Review of The Unwilling Assassin by rainbownixie

30 March 2025

My favorite thing about these Audios is how Rory keeps getting himself into the worst situations possible while trying to avoid them completely and somehow ends up with lucky outcomes out of... Kindness? Not to go deep into his character but although these Audios are mostly comedy and him getting into absurd situations that are built specifically to make him suffer in the funniest ways... Rory keeps showing time and time again just how smart, brilliant and kind he is. Love is what got him here in the first place and I'm sure it's what leads him in general. The whole "gladiator who can't die to assassin who doesn't want to kill to unwilling emperor" pipeline is hilarious but I think it just makes sense for him. Dude could just try and live peacefully and yet he either keeps getting dragged into situations or jumps right into them to protect people. Honestly, if I could I would make Rory an emperor too.
