Review of Iris at the Oche by quartz_

21 December 2024

I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH!!!!!!

this is, like, Iris's version of The Return of Doctor Mysterio lol. So if you loved that story like me, you will LOVE this one!

For once in her lives, our darling Iris isn't centre-stage. She is instead helping out this chosen one guy, at darts. Also, Shirley Bassey's Iris mention, hell yeah!!!

Just a very fun story overall, HIGHLY recommend.

Oh, and ofc, we can't forget "Wildthyme's Law, Rule Number One: if at first it doesn't work, whack it!" XD

Review of Iris Wildthyme and the Claws of Santa by quartz_

21 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

it's so bad it's funny.

i mean. the fatphobia. the- whatever's going on with Santa's bloody wife and Panda and Iris and Santa himself. that latter one and the incorrect science (steel, which is an alloy, doesn't have iron's properties! elves allergic to iron shouldn't be allergic to steel, compounds don't have the same properties as their constituent elements) is more funny than bad. but. the fatphobia :/

still, its mostly fun, and Iris (illegally) giving Clockworks tech to help out with christmas is amazing lol. and they saved christmas and santa's marriage! (though i dislike the implication that being young again saved their marriage :/ )

still, mostly fun

Review of The Two Irises by quartz_

21 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

scream. i LOVE this episode SO SO much!!!!!

Ofc, there are some very, uh, not good bits, because it's Simon Gurrier, what do you expect.

The underlying homophobia is not to my taste at all, and neither is everyone being so weird about Hilary coming out a boy. Just mention it once and it's done, please.

Still, the overall episode was everything. Hilary, oh my god, beloved! Adore how the first thing he does is try to get Panda off drinking by throwing out all the spirits. Very different from Iris, very interesting.

love the exploration of his feelings when he finds out he's computer-generated. Not real. Everything was just a glitch. And they're not mad at him! They're mad at Iris for being so bloody careless with their feelings, and just- augh, my hearts.

The second sacrifice fake-out was very Wildthyme. I loved it. The first had me so emotional, Hilary, darling!

"Like mother and son :)" "I'll settle for big sis, thanks!" Iconic. Absolutely iconic.

Would've been 5 stars if not for the homophobic undertones. In my head Hilary and Roger are living together happily with their little nightclub and also the yoga place. Please. I am snatching them out of Simon Gurrier's hands. They're mine now.

Review of The Land of Wonder by quartz_

21 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

XD fun wonderland story!! the Iris characterisation is spot on, we have got Paul Magrs to thank for that. After all, Iris is his character.

I loved that bit where Iris basically threw a tantrum when MIAOW used violence, where even Panda didn't really mind per se. It's an excellent bit of characterisation for her.

Very fun UNIT-era knock-off, and everything in WONDERLAND was sooo fun and so very Wildthyme. Definitely one of the better stories, because Paul Magrs :)

Review of The Sound of Fear by quartz_

20 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

This story was so very Wildthyme<3

It's all just so her. Ditching poor Sam to "go off and save the universe, you know how it is". Attachment issues, girl. You've got them. I love how she still cares for him.

The plot was fun, and very Wildthyme.

love how Iris just carries around a mallet in her handbag to whack things with (because, remember, Wildthyme's Law, Rule Number One, if at first it doesn't work, whack it!), and how she then had to fix it to use it. Lack of foresight, so very entertaining, so very her.

loved that ending, oh my god. It was everything. It was EVERYTHING. That girl, sacrificing herself, Iris trying her best to- what, send her off well? Give her encouraging last words? Sam, dead?

"The best funeral this universe's ever seen!" oh my god, I'm crying, Iris--

Just. Excellent. Her determination to make the best of it, how she'll definitely NOT deal with her own feelings, just- oh, Iris.

Review of The Devil in Ms Wildthyme by quartz_

20 December 2024

it was....eh.

Thats really all I can say about it. Sorry, Iris, darling, but Steve Cole could not do you justice. To add, I've never been a huge fan of his works, and it just feels...eh. It was weird. Choices were certainly made.

Panda was amazing, though. You go, David Benson!!! And Katy Manning did her best with the script too.

It just feels- I don't know, mid. There's too many things going on at once and they aren't really given enough importance, so everything just sort of falls flat.

The title of the story is an amazing choice, though, that I have got to say.

Review of Wildthyme at Large by quartz_

20 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

Iris!!! Hello!

This episode was my first foray into Iris Wildthyme (outside of the EDAs) -- and by Gallifrey, did I adore her from the very beginning.

She shows up, crashes her former companion's book signing (where the guy's gone ahead and made books out of his adventures with her, which he's feeling a bit bad about) says "SECURITY MY ARSE" when they threaten to call security on the clearly drunk madwoman -- it's amazing.

Tom feels a bit boring, just an ordinary bloke with nothing much, really, but I won't hold it against him.

Panda!! Hello! Another origin story for the guy, check! Though, it doesn't really explain where he came from, or how he ended up with Tom -- fun stuff, though.

The plot was largely forgettable, but fear not. There is Robin Hood. (And his Merry Men, and the entertaining things that happen with them and Iris.) It was chaotic and insane, though, and so very Wildthyme XD

Also, the memory crystal! How fun, though I doubt she'd need a memory crystal to forget, lol. "Blackouts that last decades", and all that XD

Overall, a fun episode with a forgettable plot, but worth listening to nonetheless, for the Iris Wildthyme Experience. Hello, Iris, and Panda, and Tom, too, though you'll be off soon. How delightful it was to meet you.

Review of The Wormery by quartz_

19 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

love this story, overall!

Sixie being so depressed after the Trial, beloved. And Iris! Iris, Iris, Iris, carelessly stepping all over his feelings with no idea what she's doing and a bit too many drinks in her.

But, of course, her drinking is plot relevant, here! Hilarious, I love it, there's bloody tequila worms, half of whom want to freeze time forever, half of whom want to use Iris's singing voice to cause chaos all throughout the universe. And Iris can only hear them when she's drunk, and initially she just thought she was hearing the Voices because she was out of it. But no. It's the tequila worms. Oh, and they also plan to take over hijacking the minds of every alcoholic ever. Hilarious.

Oh, and did I mention Bianca? Iris's version of the Valeyard, babey!!

(Bit of an odd point where six falls in love (????) with Bianca, and Iris, the overdramatic dear, has a whole tearful love confession to make to him. It's hilarious, and amazing, and though Iris is being overdramatic there's some truth to her, and just- ough, Iris, beloved.)

Anyway, fun Magrs story :)

Also!!! Seven being the one who's being told the story???? Promising to keep the tapes safe???? Oh my god, yes! This does prove that the Doctor does, in fact, care for Iris, no matter how much they may protest. It being Seven is particular is so heartwarming (with context of Muse of Fire. I wonder whether it's before or after?)

Review of Old Flames by quartz_

19 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

Ooh, what's that? A mysterious red double-decker bus?

Iris! Iris, Iris, Iris, hello!! Ah, dear Iris- wanting to leave her companion behind, to settle down and get married and be safe. She has such attachment issues, I swear. Even to the point where she abandoned him there for his own good! (First Doctor leaving Susan vibes, eh?)

And Four and Sarah, the dears. I adore their interactions, as well as theirs with Iris. <33

As this is Beryl Reid's Iris, we can, of course see the distinction between regenerations, and I love it. This one's not that insane about the Doctor, not like the others. She's trying to be mature, or something, and may I just repeat that she left her companion behind so that he could get married and be happy and safe and not with her!!!! Oh, Iris..

And I love how Lady Huntingdon and Bella turned out to not be from around here as well, and familial disputes, my beloved!! Oh, I adore this story, very much because of Iris!!

Paul Magrs really does know how to tell a tale :)
