DOCTOR: He'd have loved you.

ANNALORE: Who?

DOCTOR: The Doctor. An aggressor turned ally? An invasion foiled, all due to reason and debate. Not a single shot fired! No one dead! No one even injured! Congratulations. He's be proud of every single one of you.

ANNALORE: Thank you.

DOCTOR: Pity he's dead.

ANNALORE: Heroes don't need villains in order to be heroes.

DOCTOR: I killed the Doctor for the notion of peace! For the notion that tyranny and evil must be fought, that the continued freedom of others was worth more than his life. And he wasn't the only one! So yes, I hope if I'm ever given the chance to end this war, I'd take it. Whatever the cost. However cruel it is in that moment, I pray I'm weak enough to sink to the level of my enemies. That I reject all I've ever stood for so that everything I've spent my lives defending can flourish again.

ALISTAIR: And if you have to kill millions to do it?

DOCTOR: Then I kill millions. And I pray to whatever deities are left in creation that it kills me too.

He steps forward. He grips the handle. He wonders what his last words should be. He decides that last words are useless. He pulls the handle down, flat.

The Moment happens.

The universe sings.

The war ends.

I have no idea how long I stood there. An hour perhaps. Or a minute, or a day. Time takes on a different meaning when it is measured in the heartbeats of the billions you are about to destroy.

Finally only one little boy stood, waiting with the stranger to go over.

‘I can’t do it,’ he wailed.

‘What’s your name?’ the stranger asked.

‘Gahnna.’

‘Well, Gahnna, Rojan and all the others did it.’

‘I’m scared.’

‘Yes, I know,’ he replied. ‘And being scared is good. It’s brilliant in fact, because it pushes you to do things you wouldn’t normally do.’

‘I can’t!’ Gahnna repeated.

‘Yes, you can,’ the stranger said. ‘Trust me.’

‘Why?’

The stranger looked up, caught Rojan’s eye and smiled.

‘Trust me because I’m, well, I’m sort of a doctor.’
