Synopsis

In the Vortex, the TARDIS comes under a form of psychic attack — resulting in the abductions of first Adric, then Tegan. Following their trail, the Doctor and Nyssa arrive under the lurid skies of the planet Zaltys, whose entire population has vanished in strange circumstances. Soon, they discover that Zaltys is now the target of treasure seekers, come to scavenge this so-called Planet of the Dead...

Meanwhile, deep below the planet's surface, Adric learns the earth-shattering reason why the people of Zaltys disappeared... and why they were wise to do so. And Tegan is, quite literally, in the dark – enduring interrogation by the mysterious Clarimonde. Any friend of the Doctor's is Clarimonde's enemy... because theirs is a blood feud!

on my initial listening to this story i was put off my something i couldnt quite put my finger on, but that was almost 3 years ago and upon my relisten it was almost perfect. theres a very clear sense of dread as you put the pieces in place as the story moves along. the side character of sable is a great mix with the more subdued characters of nyssa and the fifth doctor and i dread to think what wouldve happened if she spent most of the story with tegan lmao

tegans plot here is almost thriller-esque, and janet (as usual) gives a stellar performance as she teeters on the edge of being caught by vampires. the plot twists are well executed too

Previous Story: The Contingency Club

I'm not sure why, but I just really liked this story. Gevaudan, the telepathic wolfman, is just so cool. He's probably one of my favourite side characters in an audio story, partly thanks to his great voice by Philip Franks.

In general, all the side characters here are really well done. There were so many twists and turns that I didn't see coming. The necrobiologicals are not the most inventive of villains being generic vampires but the way this played into the end of the story makes up for it. Overall this is just a great story that I thoroughly enjoyed

As a side note, those last few lines were haunting, although Big Finish foreshadow Adric's death in just about every story with him.
