Synopsis

A modulated frequency wave cancellation signal isn’t something that the Doctor and Romana expect to detect in 1960s London. But then they don’t expect to find Professor Lanchester, the man who invented it, lying unconscious. Or MI5 investigating.

With the help of MI5 Agent Miller, Lanchester’s daughter Jill, and his nephew a pirate radio DJ called Mark, the Doctor, Romana and K-9 investigate. They soon discover that there is more at risk than they imagined, and an alien invasion is about to begin.

Can the Doctor identify and defeat the aliens in time? Will Romana manage to find a recombinant transducer before it’s too late? And how will K-9 cope with his new job?

The first audio from the "Fourth Doctor Adventures" series to feature the main cast of Season 17, where later it bids farewell in the middle of Season 18 (in "Warriors Gate"). Here is a story full of promising elements distributed throughout its plot, starting with the main one, its central concept. Just like "Nocturne" (a Main Range for the 7th Doctor) which involves the idea of a "killer melody" - in "Wave Of Destruction" we see the return of the alien race "Vardans" who made their first appearance in the closing arc of Season 15 "The Invasion Of Time", this particular species is trying to apply an invasion to 1960s London using the sound waves emitted by a radio broadcast. Initially, the way this concept is presented in the story generates a lot of curiosity to the extent that we think of numerous possibilities for paths to be followed by the writer. However, unfortunately the directions taken end up generating a generic, monotonous, and very silly plot. Furthermore, the audio fails in its attempts to add a few touches of humour - I confess that initially the "scene" where Romana II goes to the Shopping Centre and ends up being heckled by several sellers, was quite funny... However, the joke goes on for too long and naturally becomes something quite humourless. Some of the main characters are literally destroyed during the course of the plot undergoing an extreme change, an example is one of the villains "Jill" – Who starts very well, an interesting character with a mysterious tone, but when the key is turned "Alix Wilton Regan" gives us a very forced performance even reminding us of the vibe from Season 11 of the New Who lol. The audio ends pitifully, involving the Sonic Screwdriver as the solution to all problems (I bet you've seen this before lol) - In summary, despite the good immersive intention of its sound effects to bring the feel of the "Swinging Sixties", its plot fails miserably delivering a story that verges on being bad.

This review contains spoilers!

This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order.

Previous Story: Babblesphere

Big Finish has a strange thing for the Vardans. They appear really often especially considering they're only appearance was in the first half of The Invasion of Time. I'm not complaining though, I think they're a really cool villain that weren't done justice in their only TV story.

The supporting cast in this one are really good and the jingle is annoyingly catchy.

I caught the name Magpie Electricals in this one, it's a fun little easter egg that crops up all over the Whoniverse.

Next Story: Labyrinth of Buda Castle
