Synopsis

"The past is like a foreign country. Nice to visit, but you really wouldn't want to live there."

In 2003, Rebecca Whitaker died in a road accident. Her husband Mark is still grieving. He receives a battered envelope, posted eight years ago, containing a set of instructions with a simple message: "You can save her."

As Mark is given the chance to save Rebecca, it's up to the Doctor, Amy and Rory to save the whole world. Because this time the Weeping Angels are using Mark himself as a weapon to change history.

Jonathan Morris is a writer who particularly specialises in the weird effects of time travel, it comes up in almost all his stories and here he gets to write arguably his best work in a story showcasing a victim of the Weeping Angel's touch, only instead of sending him back to the distant past, it throws him back less than 20 years and as he spends his life growing old in his own younger years he's given the chance to change history and save his doomed wife. Mark is such a well written and well defined character, not just the present version but also his past version whom we see grow up and go through all the struggles in life and his relationships, and throughout the story the Doctor, Amy and Rory pop up here and there to ensure history remains on track as the Weeping Angels keep interfering in some nefarious plot of theirs. It features a brilliant climax with the Doctor desperately trying to convince Mark that his wife has to die in a car accident and what the consequences would be should history be changed. It does have a bit of a fairytale ending for Mark's situation but given how heavy going the climax was I can let it slide. Touched by an Angel is a fantastic read.

Touched by an Angel is a deliciously tragic story.

Mark is an empathetic character, as we see him throughout his life, we begin to understand what Rebecca meant to him, which makes this story all the more tragic, as the reader understands that he will not be able to save Rebecca, but are nonetheless rooting for him, as most of us would certainly attempt to save someone we loved.

The time travel is done well, and the entire premise of going back in time to make sure your life turns out correctly is a fascinating concept.

I hope that we can eventually see an Angel story of this calibre on TV one day
