This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order. Previous Story: The Trials of a Time Lord A solid introduction to Hebe. She seems like she's going to be a very unique companion. Her dynamic with 6 and Mel is already great. I love a companion who pushes back against the Doctor, especially 6. It's quite fitting that Hebe was taught by Evelyn, that was a sweet little reveal. There's not much going in the way of plot, not that it's boring, just very simple. I love stories with really dynamic groups like this that are more about the character interactions. It reminds me of Midnight in the sense that it's a bunch of people trapped in one place and the conflicts that form regarding that. Very interesting start, I'm curious to see how the rest of this unfolds. "Water Worlds" is the first box set of the latest range from the 6th Doctor at BIG FINISH, which brings more adventures traveling with Mel and also introduces a new companion. After receiving an SOS, the TARDIS travelers head to an oil station called Albatross Alpha located in the North Sea. After an unpleasant reception involving numerous crazed seagulls attacking them, the 6th Doctor and Mel meet a wheelchair user named Hebe Harrison who provides details about the chaotic situation the station is experiencing, with strange and unexplained events occurring to a group of 6 people. Suspecting alien influence, the Doctor and Mel begin to suspect that there is an infiltrator supposedly allied with the aliens. It is impressive how Jacqueline Rayner manages to keep her listeners engaged even amidst simple plots, issues, or settings. It's no wonder she has become one of my favorite writers at BIG FINISH. She clearly illustrates all the characteristics and personalities of her characters, using this as a key factor in creating suspicion around each of them. The writer proves once again how meticulous she is in creating and developing her characters. Well portrayed by Ruth Madeley, we meet Hebe Harrison, a highly intelligent marine biologist and wheelchair user who was once a friend of Evelyn Smythe. She has a very strong personality, showing clear signs of immense confidence to the point of not feeling sorry for herself and disliking being treated or seen as different due to her condition. Jacqueline Rayner explores the prejudices involving wheelchair users very well and uses them to shape the entire personality of her new companion. Despite being courageous and confident, we notice that Hebe tries to hide some of her feelings that haunt her mind, showing signs of bad mood, negativity, dissatisfaction, sarcasm, and biting irony. At times, we notice that the role of the 6th Doctor and Mel will be to open Hebe's eyes to change a negative view she has of herself, which is clear in the scene where she calls herself imperfect. In summary, "The Rotting Deep" has a very simple plot compensated by its focus on its characters, denouncing the prejudices suffered by wheelchair users and showing how this can harm the victims, while also featuring a very important environmental message at the end.
