We now come to the final performance of Caroline John as Liz Shaw before her death four months before this was even released. Caroline John was fantastic both in life and as Liz Shaw which makes me sad we never got more from her in the show. Much as I love the pairing of Three and Jo, Liz was a far better companion in my opinion, a far cry from the usual companion archetypes, and what a story for Caroline to go out on with one of my favourites from The Companion Chronicles. Told through different conversations between Liz and her mother, Emily, throughout the course of Season 7, Liz has noticed a lot of the deaths of certain characters in Season 7 had two things in common, one was that they were all members of the same committee her mother attends, and two is that they all received letters foretelling their deaths. The answer to this mystery lies in a conspiracy that forecasts the end of the world itself. For one last time Caroline John is wonderful as Liz and works brilliantly alongside Rowena Cooper, right from the get-go you instantly buy these two as mother and daughter with Liz’s mother quickly becoming an enjoyable character in an enticing mystery that keeps your interest throughout. The build-up and reveal of what’s causing the deaths and the nature behind Emily’s committee, while still far out in the usual sci-fi way, also feels frighteningly realistic, the sort of thing you’d hear about in government conspiracy theories. This is a must listen for Third Doctor fans, as The Last Post makes for a great love letter to not only Pertwee’s first year but Caroline John’s short-lived but impactful tenure.
