This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order. Previous Story: War Against the Laan The return of Jago and Litefoot, two side characters so good that they got their own spinoff. That was a joy to listen to, a fun little romp and easily my favourite story in this series. I enjoyed the plot, the vigilante character was basically Batman and the robot serving justice was quite funny. Tom Baker and Mary Tamm have excellent chemistry on audio, it's such a shame she only got one series with him. Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter's double act of Jago and Litefoot is easily the highlight of this story. The plot isn't anything distinctly special, but it's not meant to be. Above all it's meant to be a fun reunion between the Fourth Doctor and Jago & Litefoot, and in that regard, it's absolutely brilliant. Following the traces of an alien technology, 10 years after the events of "The Talons of Weng-Chiang", the Doctor returns to Victorian London and reunites with his old friends "Jago & Litefoot" who are embroiled in an investigation involving mysterious disappearances of criminals. The city is being tormented by a series of murders under the pretext of a strange vigilante seeking justice, who calls himself "The Boxer". John Dorney explores his concept of an urban superhero vigilante very well, supporting it with a tonal juggling between comedy and light killings, bringing a subtly dark air to the story. It is a very entertaining audio to listen to, full of action with a lot of ingenious dialogues, the dynamics between the characters (even more so with the addition of Jago & Litefoot) is incredibly fluid, Mary Tamm steals the show with her funny moments delivering an intelligently hilarious formal humour. The conclusion is quite eventful (in a good way) ending in a rather sad manner - In summary, without a doubt "The Justice Of Jalxar" is among the best of the Fourth Doctor Adventures line, said by many to be the best of the 2nd Season. An average story featuring vigilantes in Victorian England, the return of two old favourites and a date with Romana going very wrong... Lots of side plots being juggled. The Fourth Doctor obviously enjoys the company of Professor Litefoot, and takes great pleasure in fighting the steam robot, but there's a moment I really didn't expect from him, where he talks about everyone he's failed, and that grief felt more like something that would come from the New Who Doctors than the Fourth. Romana finds a gentleman lover yet again! She gets some funny moments with Jago, but she's ultimately sidelined for the focus on Jago and Litefoot. I think that robot was broken - did it find anyone not guilty? I liked the Victorian-augmented elements, it added a steampunky theme to the story, but overall it was just generic and boring. Meh. The idea of a person using it to get revenge on criminals is alright, but the emotional ties between them is very stupid and there could've been a better way to deal with it. How many times has this Doctor been to Victorian London? He must go there more than the 21st Century, and he's had at least 10 companions from there! The description of the fog hides London under the cover of darkness, allowing any criminal activities to take place, creating a sense of fear. This is great and atmospheric. Jago and Litefoot return! Big Finish immediately capture their presence and characters, and Benjamin and Baxter step into the role like they've never been away. Because of this, the story focuses on them, and it means that they don't spend as much time making an interesting story. If you're interested in nostalgia, this is great as you can hear the Fourth Doctor interacting with Jago and Litefoot once again. But if you want an interesting, developed story, this isn't for you.
