Probably the weakest out of the Philip Hinchliffe Boxsets. This story is really about the side characters, so it means that both the Doctor and Leela get sidelined a bit - but it doesn't mean that they don't get stuff to do! The way the Doctor acts when he loses Leela is heartbreaking, and it's great for Tom to show off some of the variety, whilst he still gets to be his usual eccentric self. Leela fits really well into this story, showing to the natives what a true savage looks like - This story was made for her. Volor is excellent. Cold, chilling - his voice is a masterpiece, and not unlike Sutekh's. His voice is so commanding and seductive, whilst his plan is basic but not patronising. Volor brings a dark and gritty tone to the story, and they're a great addition to a very political story. Also, Jon Culshaw plays the President, and he's also awesome. Must've been weird for Tom and Tom's impersonator to meet. As I mentioned previously, this story focuses on the side characters and their ideologies. The political ideas were a great concept, but not really anything special. The ideas that it brings up that separates the two factions has some weight behind it, but it didn't really hook me in and felt quite boring. However, the themes all fully fleshed out the characters which made them developed and very convincing, which is something that the PHP boxsets seems to have done really well. Overall a decent story, but I definitely prefer the other three stories. It's nice that we're finally moving away from Earth, though. Here's to some more PHP in the future!
