This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order. Previous Story: Red Planets Once again, the vibes are on point. The setting is really eerie and feels like it's come straight out of McCoy's era on the show. The first half isn't all that remarkable but it manages to coast by on a good bit of tension and really enjoyable character interactions. Arkallax was particularly well voiced and made for a great villain, not too dissimilar from someone like the Toymaker. I also like a good cliffhanger at the end. So far this one takes the title of BEST from this batch of audios from Mel's return. Although its ideas and concepts somewhat remind one of the villain Toymaker, “The Mind Robber” arc of the 2nd Doctor, and the audio "House of Blue Fire" of the 7th Doctor – Mark Morris delivers a very creative and engaging story full of great characters, situations, and very exciting events. Comparing it with previous audios, the narrative of “The Dispossessed” shows a brutal difference in terms of quality being very thrilling every minute. Detecting strange readings, the TARDIS takes its passengers to a strange portal on Earth – initially in a pile of rubble and then being drawn to a type of tower or building, the Doctor, Ace, and Mel encounter floors infested with zombies forcing the separation of the trio and placing them in different situations. Further on we discover that the whole location is a mental projection of the story’s villain “”, the antagonist needs to absorb brilliant minds to extract their energy sources enabling his freedom from the world he is in. The scene of the Doctor's confrontation with the villain is very well built and conducted, starting in a calmness where the two are having tea next to a comfortable fireplace, and then moving to a very heavy and tense mental conflict. Another thing that this audio surpasses the others are the performances of the characters, especially the main cast, Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred, and Bonnie Langford are fantastic in their roles bringing an incredible and exciting dynamic to the story in moments that require solving survival situations in a tense environment. “The Dispossessed” brings together different ideas that are very well interconnected by Mark Morris – we have a zombie infestation, mental projections, a survival scenario, a setting that has a life of its own... among others that I might be forgetting. Safe to say that this is the most intriguing release from this batch of audios from Mel's return. (Translation generated by AI, so mistakes are possible).
