Time Lording through time and space, one victory at a time! This time: showtime of the Daleks, part I! The Dalek fleet arrives on Islos to get to their archive and find information about the Dark Times. We meet the new, golden, and dome-headed Dalek Emperor properly, and Nick Briggs has a great time voicing him. The Dalek Strategist also appears here, so we get a good understanding of the hierarchy here. The animation is crude, but the opening installment goes all in with a major battle scene and imaginative design, and we are shown the true power of the Daleks as they force the locals to surrender the archive. The Archivians are interesting new robotic creatures, sort of combinations between the Angel robots from Voyage of the Damned and the Daleks themselves. They also have quite a witty personality, which is fun. The Daleks are betrayed in the end, as the Archivians and the contents of the archive escape to the Dark Times through a portal, leaving the Daleks as sacrificial lambs. Yeah, the animation was a little cheap, but I love the design of the three main Daleks we focus on here. Usually it is hard to get much character out of these guys but I think they do a pretty good job at having a distinct sense of three slightly different versions of the character - the power-hungry Emperor, the ancient advisor the kind of sounds like Davros, and the crazy kill-happy executioner. As much as the animation feels cheap, the production also clearly puts a lot of time and effort into bringing comic book Daleks to life, all the while telling a pretty neat introduction for a Time Lord Victorius thing. And it does all of that in like 10 minutes while making the Daleks feel pretty creepy and dangerous. I'm intrigued how the rest of the series goes now so I think this first episode did a good job overall. dema1020 View profile Like Liked 2 14 June 2024 · 84 words Review by WhoPotterVian Spoilers 2 This review contains spoilers! Very impressive for a freebie. I like the Archivians. They're very cunning, and have some funny witty comebacks against the Daleks (my favourite being "Do you have a membership card?"). The way they trick the Daleks at the end is very clever, although you would think the Daleks would have a bit more intelligence to realise they had walked into a trap. I actually quite like the animation. It's miles better than 2009's Dreamland, even if the explosions do look a bit fake. The animation is really bad, and not just by today's standards. One could argue that with the budget and technology available at the time, no more was possible. However, they could have either omitted or differently staged the large, episode-introducing battle scene. As it stands, the episode leaves a bad taste right from the start. The actual story, however, is truly gripping: the back and forth between the Daleks and the Archivists, the interactions and the dynamics among the Daleks themselves. How superbly the malice and danger of the Daleks are conveyed – simply superb! (Translation generated by AI, so mistakes are possible). The way the Daleks could act as a homogenous soldiery mass, but we still had the Daleks the story focused on have different opinions and thoughts, showed a good understanding of what Daleks are, one which I find too many nuwho stories to lack. There was one line in particular about the Archive being just 'one more thing of beauty for them to destroy' that felt especially in touch with the Daleks' motivations and tactics, and the ending was very well done and impactful. Written by a true master of the art of the story, I pronounce this a good, solid thing deserving of it's 4 stars. I am looking forward to continuing this series! The Daleks have come for the archive, yet the robotic archivians are not prepared to give it up. The first time I watched this series was when I had listened to the first three Big Finish TLV audios, and was left a little confused. I hoped watching this would help, but at the time it didn’t seem to tie into the story I’d begun. Now I’ve read the novels, some of the other bits and pieces, its making more sense. In the short story, The Last Message, the Emperor Dalek realises he needs more information about what happened to the Dalek drone (TLV trailer: The Last Message) and how the Doctor was involved, The Archive of Islos was where the data was to be found. The animation take a more realistic approach rather than a cartoonish one. Its colourful and maybe a little garish. There are some nice shots and it looks quite good. At 13 minutes, its not going to be an epic but it crams in a story with a bit of a cliffhanger. It worth a watch. Having the context of the short story (vastly) improves it. The episode is nice. I love the animated style, it's absolutely spectacular to watch. It's totally impressive that the work is very well done. It's a shame that we don't really know what the archives contain apart from the protective robots. I love the peppermill on wheels that acts as the leader of the Dalek group. The Chief Archivian is hilarious and the Dalek’s were given such a fresh perspective. It was so interesting to see their different personalities. Looking forward to continuing with this series! gia0203 View profile Like Liked 2
