This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order. Previous Story: Enemy of the Daleks What a story! It's technically not a pure historical thanks to a hypersonic laser scalpel that Hex brought with him but it's close enough. Surprisingly timey-wimey as it plays with the recurring idea of the Doctor having influenced events before he even arrives which is something that's been very prevalent throughout McCoy's run so far. This is a brilliant character piece for Hex, diving into his motivations to become a nurse. His dynamic with Florence Nightingale in particular is quite enjoyable and the idea that he might have inspired her by accident is quite an interesting one (although you could argue it sort of tries to take away from her accomplishments (but I don't really think it was presented that way)). Ace gets some solid stuff where she befriends Tolstoy. I think their chemistry was quite good but it definitely wasn't the focus of the story. I'm aware the whole white TARDIS stuff will be expanded on but it feels really odd and inconsequential in this story. Also, what a genuinely shocking cliffhanger. I really hope the next story doesn't fumble that but given it's got "project" in the name (and considering my past experiences with the "project" stories) I'm not too hopeful. Great story though, I really liked it. I'm starting off by highlighting that this might be the audio that has, if not the best, then certainly "ONE OF" the best second halves of all the BIG FINISH audios (at least of all that I've listened to so far, haha). Once again Hex takes the main role with the spotlight on his character, which is a delight for the big fans and supporters of the companion. Here the TARDIS travellers land in the middle of the Crimean War, soon discovering that they have already been involved in this event and ended up making a huge mess of history - As a result, each of the characters are separated and experience different situations with the story blocks being told out of order, requiring the listener's maximum attention for a full understanding of the plot. Hex is contributing to the improvement of injured soldiers by practicing all his nursing skills, accompanied by the so-called founder of nursing, "Florence Nightingale". The Doctor is being accused of being a double agent and tries desperately to find a way to reunite with his companions. Meanwhile, Ace finds herself hidden with "Leonard Tolstoy" - The highlight of "The Angel Of Scutari" is in Paul Sutton's writing, the excellent alternation of blocks applied by the writer makes his story incredibly dynamic, making every minute and piece of his plot unmissable. The entire final block that runs from the start of the second half (part 3) to what I consider the peak of the audio (the conclusion of the story) is PERFECT, concluding with a very memorable and shocking ending. In my opinion, "The Angel Of Scutari" borders on perfection; it only didn't get a "10/10" because I still felt the presence of a few slight slips, especially in the blocks involving the situation of the 7th Doctor - At times, this block had a certain "sausage exception" behaviour, something that seemed only to waste time. The block from the first half has some moments that could be described as monotonous (in my view, this would not be an exaggeration at all). In summary, this is an UNMISSABLE audio!
