This is yet another case of those audio dramas that captivate you from the first to the last second of the plot. More precisely, in this pure historical set in 1462 (as reported in the audio), the 5th Doctor, Peri, and Erimem are inserted amidst the invasion of Ottoman territory caused by the Romanian voivode of Wallachia “Vlad III”. Known as Vlad Dracula/Drakul, this event resulted in thousands of Turks and Bulgarians being massacred - The story of the voivode is considered one of the most curious and cruel in all of history, his Romanian surname was Dracuela which means something close to “Son Of The Dragon” hence the title of the audio hehe. Through studies of legends and popular narratives of Eastern Europe, the Irish writer Bram Stoker was inspired by this historical figure to develop his eponymous novel published in 1897 “Dracula”. Speaking of the character, what to say about the performance of James Purefoy who delivers a seductive, intelligent, sometimes sympathetic character, always demonstrating to be in conflict with his powerful, cunning, and incredibly ruthless nature, making his villain unpredictable throughout almost the entire plot. Another highlight goes to Erimem, who gets involved with Dracula in a way not expected by her listener, once again she received well-deserved attention and prominence, her decisions in the event are fundamental for the next episodes of the plot. One of the things I find coolest about audio dramas, besides triggering new stories to the Doctors - BIG FINISH always shows a certain loving care in terms of continuation, complementing the development of their characters well without ignoring the occurrences in the TV Series. In this case, for example, we have the 5th Doctor in a clearly awakening situation, showing a lot of fear and a certain anxiety concerning Peri and especially Erimem, who has shown traits and has threatened a few times a goodbye, the Time Lord strives as much as possible not to commit the same mistakes with his previous companions (Adric in “Earthshock”, Tegan in “Resurrection Of The Daleks”). In summary, Son Of The Dragon brings an entire terrifying atmosphere of Gothic horror surrounded by excellent characters with an intriguing plot from start to finish, perhaps the audio could have received the highest rating in my reviews if it had not presented an ending a bit cold and without much emotion, I highly recommend this story to fans of the genre. This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order. Previous Story: The Gathering Another excellent historical with 5, Peri, and Erimem. This might be the best, most consistent run I've listened to ever. This story in particular is fantastic, it's a very traditional pure historical in the vein of something like Marco Polo. It takes place over a large span of time and you really get to know the characters. James Purefoy as Prince Vlad/Dracula is absolutely the highlight of this adventure. I love this idea of taking historical figures deemed to be evil and showing a different side of them. This story presents Dracula as misunderstood but it never outright says he is a good person or condemns him as a bad one. It reminds me of the way The Kingmaker handled Richard III. This is another excellent outing for Caroline Morris as Erimem. Her seeming to fall in love with Dracula was one of the most compelling parts of this story. I love how these stories are letting Erimem be more independent that the usual companion. Nicola Bryant is great here as Peri. Her desperation to save Erimem despite not necessarily wanting to be saved was a great example of their friendship. Peter Davison is on top-form, he's every bit the wise, unwavering hero here and every scene with him is a delight. This is a great story and a deeply interesting take on a historical figure who's usually viewed in a very one-dimensional way, it's a genuinely touching piece at times and an excellent pure historical very much reminiscent of the historicals with the First Doctor.
