Synopsis

It's 1793 and the Reign of Terror is slicing through the elite of Paris - but not if the Scarlet Pimpernel has anything to do with it! With a very British pluck, and daring bravado, he rescues French aristocrats from Madame Guillotine's embrace. But who hides beneath the Pimpernel’s mask? And isn’t the Scarlet Pimpernel just a fictional character?

At Highmoor House, in England, Peri plays lady of the manor while the Doctor tends to the strange wounds of her ‘husband’, Sir Percy Blakeney. As Peri prepares to host a lavish ball in Sir Percy’s name, French agent Citizen Donat, and a sinister alien force are uninvited guests, both intent on unmasking the Scarlet Pimpernel and putting an end to his heroic escapades, forever!

Previous Story: Brightly Shone The Moon That Night

Really enjoyed this one, it has so many things going for it that it's hard not to. It starts off as a really fun pseudo-historical, I thought it was gonna stay like that for the entire story. I also thought it would be set in France more, something in the vein of Reign of Terror. None of these predictions were correct as it shifted to a very different story altogether.

I almost felt bad for Percy, until the twist happened. That was absolutely the highlight of the story, Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant's sheer outrage at this, especially the former was some brilliant bits of acting. It tapped into that unpredictable and unstable side of 6 from TV where you never know if he's ready to go against his morals or not, without feeling out of character for the Doctor. Those final words from Peri to Percy hit hard, a very poignant end for the story, showing how much Peri cares for the Doctor. Overall a very fun, very dramatic story that I would recommend.

PERI: Before I go, Percy. There is something I wanted to say.

SIR PERCY: M'lady?

PERI: You are a liar. And I hate that. I do. But aside from actual genocide, the thing you did that was worse than hurting me was hurting my friend. I am not sure how much I ever believed you, but he did. He absolutely did. Like a child would. And you smashed that trust, totally! And NOBODY does that to MY friend!

SIR PERCY: My lady, no, please...

PERI: Goodbye, husband. You are divorced!
