Not a bad episode but not one of my favorites for sure

We get the return of Cassandra, this time with a body swapping ability that creates some funny moments. The Doctor destroys the cat nun's laboratory and frees all the diseased slaves. I think this could have been a more interesting situation if he got to see the effects of that on the medicine of New Earth. The way he cures them is kinda nonsensical but it's handwaved, I don't really hate it that much

Maybe this episode would have been better with a little shop

2025 Rewatch

  • While I don't think it's a solid story, I have a soft spot for it. It's not offensive to watch; it just doesn't feel so believable and echoes the message of the first trip to the 'New Earth' period of the show.
  • I do like the concept and the great ideas, some funky and some simplistic; just the execution is the true problem
  • How does Cassandra know how to do so much? Where did the cat nun on the ladder come from? When did the sick learn to talk?
  • Cassandra, just like that,t realised she had to die? I don't think she was shown what it means to have her time
  • The solution of using those melted ice pop bags of coloured juice in the lift, I guess, makes sense by it spreading from hand to hand and steam propping up from every single touch was the most unbelievable thing

The humour doesn't always land, but it has its moments of fun. Plot wise, I like the ideas and the hospital setting which is well realised, but the creatures and plot is a bit too dark to mesh with the funny body swapping stuff, where the tonal whiplash feels strange.

I think the Episode is pretty okay overall, personally I am not too big on it but can see what they were trying to attempt with this. Sadly, I feel like this is a perfect case of two types of Stories clashing with each other.

In one hand you have the freaky Friday body swap between the Doctor, Rose and Casandra, which is a fine idea, on the other you have a story about an almost “Conspiracy” at New Earth with its Patients. Both Stories are a fine idea, mixed together they don’t work at all. I haven’t mentioned it yet, but I think with Series 2 it’s more clear that the runtime sometimes can be rather “too short” to fully delve into its potential of its Stories. Add this with the fact that it leans more into the lovey dovery of Rose and Ten, and you got an Opener that ranks very low most of the time for me.

Performance wise: Piper does really well, and you can tell the difference when it’s Rose and when it’s Casandra, unlike Tennant who still kinda struggles to find his foot after an excellent first impression. Most People here do a good Performance, but I really don’t like the Script, the overly flirty vibe doesn’t work for me at all. Then again most of the time while I want to try to like them, I can’t work much with most Doctor Romances and this one just doesn’t work for me. I can see the appeal of course and of course I am happy for anybody who enjoys them but this Tardis Team gets a bit on “my nerves” with it.

Overall the Story has some few nice things, the Idea of New Earth is cool but never goes too deep with it. The Makeup on the Cat Nuns is splendid, and it does an alright job to set up the romance some more between 10 and Rose.

(The Doctor is starting to power up the TARDIS, while outside Jackie and Mickey are with Rose, who has a heavy rucksack on her back.)

JACKIE: Have you got everything?
ROSE: I've got everything, don't worry.
JACKIE: Be careful.
ROSE: You'll have to call Mo about that
JACKIE: Oh, never mind Mo.
ROSE: Okay, I'm going now. I love you!
JACKIE: I love you.
ROSE: Love you, love you.

(She kisses Mickey.)

MICKEY: Love you.
ROSE: Bye.
