Previous Story: The Doomsday Quatrain This story has a fantastic first half - really eerie and atmospheric. But then it just loses my interest. It veers off into technobabble stuff and the main monster of the story is pretty uninteresting. Wow, a mysterious creature that feeds off fear/nightmares with an apostrophe in the name (seriously what is it with aliens that have apostrophes in their name being so dull?), how original. I also don't know how much I care about the new companion, Sally Morgan. If I was forced to answer any questions about her as a person I'd be stumped. Quite frankly, I just want this arc to be over and done with. House Of Blue Fire evokes a great sensation and a tense atmosphere of psychological horror in an appropriately strange environment full of interesting and independent characters where everyone has their own particular personality being distinctly interpreted by their respective actors. Here we see 4 characters staying who need to escape from a mysterious and enigmatic hotel where they are attracted by numerous traps needing to overcome and conquer their fears and phobias - It is brilliant that on top of this concept the writer focused on showing the painful and empty sensations that the phobic response usually gives to a person, and more interestingly, Mark Morris did not use uncommon or differentiated fears, but rather common and real ones, we see the characters suffering their own hell agonized and sunk in their own fears. If we were only to consider its first half (part 1 and 2) the rating of this review would certainly be 10/10 - But then comes its second half where the focus of its story changes, not to something bad, just different, still having a sense of continuity. Now talking about the main star, this is surely among the best performances of Sylvester McCoy as the 7th Doctor, he mixes the mysterious and enigmatic nature of his character always being very manipulative along with his light touches of humour, here the Time Lord literally steals the scene, his performance is so good, so good, that when he disappears from the scene we feel a great lack of his presence (it's the same feeling when we see the best player of a match being substituted haha). Reading some reviews, I see that many complain about the end of the story, really its conclusion is a bit abrupt and quick, but honestly, I do not see it as something detrimental, especially when we have an overall view of its script. In summary, in my opinion House Of Blue Fire is a great Hidden Gem from the 7th Doctor audio plays that you can listen to comfortably, I highly recommend it for those who like mysteries and psychological horror.
