Synopsis

The Doctor is still being jolted through his own timeline, and has now found himself with Nyssa, Tegan and Adric in ninth century Iceland near a Viking settlement on the edge of a volcano. A settlement whose leader has just found a god in the ice.

The TARDIS crew are soon in a battle with the fearsome Ice Warriors. There are a lot of lives to save…and not just those of their new friends.

The Doctor's about to find that his biggest battle may be with his own conscience.

This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order.

Previous Story: Kinda

The Fifth Doctor is pulled backward in time to when he was travelling with Adric, Tegan and Nyssa. This is a great story that grapples with the burden of knowing the future. The Doctor knows exactly what's coming for his friends and it's really sad. This leads to a lot of interesting moments, he lets Adric go off on his own because he knows that Adric won't die. He can't take on another companion because he knows that she never travelled with him. He can't let Adric stay behind either.

This story focuses on the characters a lot more, making up for the lack of development in their TV appearances at the same point in time. The story itself is not remarkable, but it doesn't need to be. It follows the simple Ice Warrior Story formula of a crashed ship full of Ice Warriors trapped in ice for a couple thousand years only to be thawed out and discover their planet is dead. I do wish they had some more ideas for the ice warriors but if it works it works I suppose.

The sound design and soundtrack are a standout, especially the latter. All this makes for a very solid story and it'll only be disappointing if you listen to it for the Ice Warriors. I was really hoping they'd change it up and have a benevolent Ice Warrior for once but alas, no. This meant the Ice Warrior "betrayal" couldn't have been more expected. Regardless, the main star of the show is the character development and this story has plenty of that.

DOCTOR: It's nice to spend some time together, just the two us, don't you think?

ADRIC: I suppose so... Though, why you'd want to spend any time with me after what happened with the TSS unit, I don't know. You were so angry with me.

DOCTOR: Um, I'm sorry. I know I can be a little hard on you at times, Adric, but I see potential in you, that's all. I would hate for it to go to waste.

ADRIC: Why would it go to waste?

DOCTOR: Because sometimes you're impulsive, and you act before you've fully thought the consequences of things through.

ADRIC: I'm not stupid!

DOCTOR: No! No, you're not.

ADRIC: Then why do you treat me like a child?

DOCTOR: I... I'm afraid of losing you.

ADRIC: You're not going to lose me. I mean, where would I go? You're all I have; you, Tegan and Nyssa.

DOCTOR: I know.

ADRIC: I'm capable of so much more than you think I am. If you'd just give me a chance to prove myself.

DOCTOR: I know, you're extremely capable. One day, you're going to do something great, something very important

ADRIC: Doctor, are you sure you're feeling alright?

DOCTOR: No. No, not really.
