I found this pretty uninspiring.

It is nice to have audios from the lesser represented actors/characters and Turlough is an interesting character.

Turlough storms off out of the TARDIS after a dissagreement with the Doctor and Tegan. He finds they've arrived in the later days of the Wild West, and runs into a freakshow, though the 'freaks' are aliens.

The fact is that while this is a perfectly reasonable story, its forgettable.

I have the feeling there could have been a great point to make, or some characterisation, since this is set just after Enlightenment, but its just a story.

This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order.

Previous Story: Enlightenment

It's been a while since I've heard a companion chronicle and this has made me realise how much I miss them. You get to flesh out the setting and characters so much more than you would in a full-cast audio. It helps that this is performed by Mark Strickson, who has a great amount of range, he's able to keep you entertained while not getting over-the-top. His impressions of his co-stars are also really good and capture their mannerisms perfectly.

Aside from that, this is just a good story in general. Like I mentioned before, the setting is really fleshed out. The atmosphere of this story is incredible and Strickson's performance of the vivid descriptions takes you straight into the Wild West. I love that a good chunk of this story only features Turlough in Buzzard Creek, it gives some much needed exploration into his character and his actions over the past few stories.

Once the Doctor and Tegan arrive, it becomes a little more standard but the setting and soundtrack remain enjoyable throughout and Toby Longworth is great as the showman Thaddeus P. Winklemeyer. Overall, a great story, not only for it's decent plot but the rich insight it gives into Turlough as a character.
