Ah, we've reached the low point of Season 16. Shame, cos this had the potential to be great - it's in Season 16, and written by Robert Holmes. But I expect he rushed this after Ted Lewis failed with his story, Shield of Zareg.
What do the Doctor and Romana actually do in this story? They really just run around and get captured, tortured and sacrificed - Despite this, they still seem to maintain that great chemistry and positivity towards their roles, which makes the episode a lot more enjoyable. It's a shame they barely do anything, though.
Kroll the giant squid - I've heard that it's the largest monster on the show - I don't know if that's true, but cool if it is. First of all, I obviously have to give credit to the visual effects department for pulling off a (mostly) convincing creature of that size - even if the tentacle bits look a bit cheap. But it looks great in wide shots! I also liked the idea of the Key To Time being incorporated into the villain's story - where it's really just a monster eating things, but it's been deified for some reason?? Why?
Love the location filming, it always looks better than studio sets. It's good that this season has branched out and explored different places for planets rather than generic quarries that they did so much in the 70s - Colony In Space, The Deadly Assassin, etc. The swamp was a nice, interesting place to explore, and I just want to add how amazing the TARDIS buried in that swamp looks on the DVD cover.
I feel bad for the actors who played the Swampies - apparently, they forgot to order the paint remover, and a lot of them were stuck in green paint for weeks! I liked the hints towards the segregation and discrimination from the humans to the swampies, but there wasn't anything else too interesting about this.
Definitely one of Holmes' weaker scripts, but it's still enjoyable. Won't be rewatching it, mind, but it's worth watching for the visuals. I'm excited for the finale to the Key to Time arc!
