I hadn’t particularly loved this story on original broadcast, but this time round I found myself completely charmed by it. This new, less sociable, amenable Doctor works wonderfully as a straight man in a comedic setting. The comedy is a breath of fresh air at this point of the series, shining a fresh light on our team and not letting the production settle into a po-face.
Robin Hood vs. The Doctor works an absolute treat. I genuinely buy them as rivals, with Robin almost playing more of a David Tennent character in opposition to Capaldi. Their comic dialogue made me realise how well known Mark Gatiss is for comedy and how underutilised he has been in this regard for Doctor Who.
For me it only starts to slip as the show clammers towards a resolution. Suddenly robots are unable to shoot at anything other than chest height (even though they’re shooting from their faces) and a golden arrow penetrating the outer hull of a spaceship powered by gold is enough to send it into orbit. You have to suspend your disbelief more than usual for it to work.
But the emotional beats work. And watching Robin copy a sword fighting move he learnt from The Doctor towards the end of the action is a beautiful punch the air moment.
Maybe I am getting less grumpy with age, because I had a lot of fun with this one!
