Following the buildup in Utopia and The Sound of Drums, this episode is a bit of a let down. The plot is a bit of mess, relying a little too much on telling opposed to showing the key component of the Doctor’s plan, that being people actually being told about him more than once. Martha should ostensibly be the most important character in the story but we don’t get to see much of that, only the tail end of her journey around the world. Can I also just mention the gratuitous usage of the flashback? I promise the audience remembers which scene you’re referring to, especially after already cutting back to it already. The resolution is a bit wishy-washy, what with the power of belief and all, but it’s fun to watch. Martha does, however, get one of my favorite exits. The way she stands up to him and speaks her feelings has yet to be matched.
