This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order.
Previous Story: A Sting in the Tale
Yates is arguably the most nuanced character in the UNIT team, bar the Doctor so I was worried when I first started Hornets' Nest that Mike Yates would be sidelined in favour of the Doctor. I was concerned that he was only in these stories because they needed a returning character and Richard Franklin was available. Luckily that's not the case at all. Paul Magrs proves that Mike Yates is here for a reason. This is a really good exploration of his character, how he viewed his time at UNIT, how he views the Doctor.
Aside from Yates, this story is a very good conclusion to the series. The hornet queen is defeated and the Swarm is stopped. Luckily the Swarm is not fully explained and left mysterious like all the best villains in Doctor Who. I'm excited to see where the next two series go.
Poor Yates this is the third time he's betrayed the Doctor, he just can't catch a break.
