Review of Tropical Beach Sounds and Other Relaxing Seascapes #4 by whoismariaanyway

9 January 2025

Have to confess right away that i haven't seen or listened to any Torchwood before this and i was here solely because of Michael Palin. I knew the characters, of course, and the general info, but that's it.

Did i enjoy this? Oh yes i did and a lot! I don't think you have to know something about Torchwood to listen to this, because it didn't spoil my experience. ASMR at its best, the wonderful, witty and amazing voice that changes and evolves through the story. I listened to it as it was specifically asked in the audio: lying on the floor and being uncomfortable with my eyes closed and it did actually add a lot to the experience.

I'm sure you'll enjoy this if you are a Torchwood fan, but if you are (as i am) a Python or specifically Sir Michael Palin fan you definitely will enjoy it as well. So i recommend this story either way. 5/5

Review of Goth Opera by whoismariaanyway

18 July 2024

This review contains spoilers!

What a great story. Maybe because it's a book adaptation, but it feels like very deep and developed story. Surprisingly even if Nyssa is the driving force of the plot, she's not having a big part in it, but Doctor and Tegan were absolutely amazing (as always). Gallifreyan lore and satanic panic fit perfectly and add much fun to the story. State of Decay always was one of my favourites, so it's nice to see some continuity here.

The cast was amazing and i really enjoyed the sound design and music.

Solid 4,5/5! And now I really want to read the book.

Review of The Power of the Daleks by whoismariaanyway

25 June 2024

This review contains spoilers!

As we know the whole idea of the regeneration (it wasn't even named like this yet) was absolutely new and this story was a big risk, hence the Daleks. It not only introduces the new Doctor, but also shows us (for the first time) two types of viewers: the ones who believe and accept the new Doctor (Polly) and the ones who don't (Ben). It's so obvious nowadays but i think it was absolutely brilliant back then and really worked very well. We are beginning to know the new Doctor through his companions and we worry, doubt and wonder with them.

The Doctor faces his greatest enemies but we as viewers also face the new fear: what happened to our beloved character and what's next.

The plot itself it's simple enough to be interesting but not to interfere with the regeneration and it's done absolutely beautiful.

At the same time the Power of the Daleks sets up the new era of Doctor Who: hostile alien planet (Ben and Polly's first actually) and the famous Troughton's "base under siege" type of stories.

10/10 for me personally, but i'm a little bit biased here.
