Review of The Creed of the Kromon by mistwhisper117

9 February 2025

The beginning with Kro’ka was interesting. Everything afterward was disappointing or unpleasant.

Review of Haunted by mistwhisper117

6 February 2025

A ghost story set during Christmas from the perspective of a one-off kid companion. The Twelfth Doctor is well realized and the short story moves along quick.

Review of Appropriation by mistwhisper117

16 January 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Darkel is starting to really annoy me. It was fun having her around for a bit, but she’s overstayed her welcome and it’s time for her to be written out.

Review of Mindbomb by mistwhisper117

16 January 2025

This review contains spoilers!

This did not live up to the hype. By this point, twists and turns are expected and therefore less impactful or can be guessed ahead of time. Darkel setting up her own assassination attempt was so obvious; it was a chore listening to all the characters catch up. After that, having Braxiatel come back was a welcome addition, but it would not make sense to have him return if he was in any real danger. And they delayed Romana’s pardon for “suspense” when it was obvious she would get pardoned along with Darkel. Still, it was nice that through him, Darkel could inadvertently kill herself off. So, after all this, it was no surprise that Braxiatel chose Matthias instead of Romana. Of course he would not choose her. Romana and Leela have been sidelined in their own audio series. At least we have Narvin.

Review of The Five Companions by mistwhisper117

I was fun to have Nyssa and Ian around. The other companions I am not too attached to.

Review of Robo Rampage by mistwhisper117

1 January 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Robo Rampage was nice and brief, tying back to TV: Robot. But other than that, not much substance.

Review of The Fourth Wall by mistwhisper117

1 January 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I had to look up who the Boneless were, as I could not remember. This is a fun if somewhat experimental idea. I have only dabbled in comics a bit so the Doctor’s impassioned speech at the end did not move me.

Review of The Price of Paradise by mistwhisper117

1 January 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I thought this was fine. It was a quick read, but I don’t particularly like Rose. I would have appreciated a more concrete explanation around the Witiku rather than just the environmental symbolism and message.

Review of Clara Oswald and the School of Death by mistwhisper117

1 January 2025

This review contains spoilers!

I really enjoyed The School of Death. I felt it captured the Twelfth Docter and Clara’s dynamic and personalities well. The Sea Devils were fun to have again, and I enjoyed the reference back to TV: The Sea Devils, with the Doctor’s interaction with them as the Third Doctor.

Other elements that were fun were having the Doctor surprise Clara in the bath, the one-off “companion” of Sonny, the art of the prehistoric area of the Sea Devils in the caverns, Clara and the students getting to use telekinesis, and the inclusion of UNIT with Kate Stewart and the Osgoods.

Review of The Doctor on My Shoulder by mistwhisper117

Decent. More meaningful if you know where it falls in the Doctor's timeline.

Review of The Time of Angels by mistwhisper117

28 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

The Time of Angels is impactful in a different way if it is your first exposure to River Song and the Weeping Angels. When I started Doctor Who with Series 5, I was not aware that both River Song and the Weeping Angels had only appeared once previously on Doctor Who TV and I had imagined more interactions had occurred already. The mystery around River Song presented in The Time of Angels is intriguing enough, but it is more impactful if you have seen episodes of Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead already.

The additional abilities given to the Weeping Angels: “image of an Angel becomes itself an Angel” with their ability to possess someone who looks at them too long, makes this story and their threat more intense than their debut in Blink. But Blink is still fantastic. Also, the fact that the Weeping Angels are killing people in this episode rather than just sending them back in time to live out their lives in the past makes the danger more real.

It is shocking how one can easily be surprised by the reveal that all the statues are Angels when the Doctor casually mentions that the natives of the planet, Aplans, had two heads. Looking at the statues, one would correctly conclude that the single-head statues are not of the Aplans, but somehow, I was still surprised along with the Doctor and River by their epiphany about the statues. Guess I was subjected to the perception filter as well.

Review of Warfare by mistwhisper117

It was an interesting development that Pandora was hearing voices too. I was surprised that this civil war arc was resolved in two stories.

Review of A Blind Eye by mistwhisper117

28 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

I enjoyed the confined location of this entry. This story incorporating a major Main Range event into its plot and character motivations helped connect the universe of Doctor Who for me and explore the ramifications of previous events. I would have preferred a more conclusive ending, but maybe more will be resolved in Gallifrey Series 2 or onward. It's helpful to remember who Andred is, but Leela having a husband without any seeming introduction is a bit of a surprise.

Review of Spirit by mistwhisper117

28 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

I did not love this. I thought it was good, but nothing special. I was more annoyed at the body swapping than anything else and as such, Romana and Leela each acting like the other got old fast. It did not add anything new or interesting, or do anything unique with the trope. Lalla Ward and Louise Jameson do as great job as always though.

Also, the aforementioned noises of broken man were unpleasant but at least not as bad as the torture in Cyberman: Scorpius which had me stop that series right from the start. I am curious about the mystery around and identity of the broken man.

Review of Lies by mistwhisper117

28 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

I like how this ties into the TV show and addresses Romana’s regeneration. A bit more Romana backstory was nice, but this wasn’t as compelling of a beginning as Weapon of Choice was for Series 1.

Review of Fractures by mistwhisper117

28 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

I did not quite expect this to start with Romana having already escaped and running a campaign of sabotage, and Narvin getting hurt yet again. It was heartbreaking listening to Leela’s emotional breakdown at realizing the permanence of her blindness. I am glad both K9 and Gerber proved loyal to Romana.

Review of The Inquiry by mistwhisper117

The episode was fairly average for me. I would have appreciated more of the courtroom drama aspect, and it was nice to have the Inquisitor featured.

Review of Flip-Flop by mistwhisper117

26 September 2024

It's a fascinating concept and execution for a story. It might have worked better visually, but it all came together in the end and made sense. Hard to say much of anything else without spoilers. The Slithergees were infuriating though. Eventually, you have to put your foot down sometime.
