Review of Orbis by joeymapes21

24 March 2025

Frustrating approach to its villain. But generally, an enjoyable story. The aquatic setting is really interesting and well realised, and used as a good backdrop to explore another side of the Eighth Doctor. The amnesia and forgetting Lucie is interesting, however, a little rushed with little consequence within this story. Its nice to find a world the Doctor was so intent on protecting after the time dedicated there, which was a nice approach to develop and strengthen this Doctor's character.

Review of Tooth and Claw by joeymapes21

24 March 2025

Perhaps this is a stronger introduction to the season than New Earth. The dynamic between Ten and Rose is enjoyable, outlining how their dynamic will be different to her interactions with Nine. At times, it does become a little irritable, but it's generally ok.

The Werewolf is terrifying, and even though it begins to look dated, I enjoy the work done to make it scary. The setting, and Queen Victoria as a character are interesting, if perhaps a little frustrating.

Review of New Earth by joeymapes21

The humour doesn't always land, but it has its moments of fun. Plot wise, I like the ideas and the hospital setting which is well realised, but the creatures and plot is a bit too dark to mesh with the funny body swapping stuff, where the tonal whiplash feels strange.

Enjoyable, and brimming with great ideas never quite fully realised to their potential

Review of Storm Warning by joeymapes21

22 March 2025

The Eighth Doctor steps into the role effortlessly, and for his return following the TV Movie for the first time, feels assured, confident, and demonstrates the hallmarks of character which cements him as a favourite moving forward. From the off, his charm is evident, and his Doctor mannerisms perfected. Big Finish develop him well throughout, and this is a great start.

Similarly, Charley is well served within this story, really stepping into her own agency and character, fleshing her out, and setting up upcoming arcs, surrounding her and the story generally in such an engaging and gripping way, which makes it feel natural to want to continue.

Story wise, this isn't quite as strong as its character elements. I think the setting and it's use within the story are effective methods to introduce Charley and the Doctor, and set up this arc, so I can excuse that the story wasn't as gripping, or as tight as it perhaps could have been. But as a fan of historical set sci-fi pieces, there is still plenty to take from this to enjoy.

Review of Ship of Fools by joeymapes21

Great concept of a party ship stuck in time, reliving this, and the effect of this on individuals, with a really effective ending, particularly enhancing Kroton's character.

Review of Throwback: the Soul of a Cyberman by joeymapes21

Kroton is such an interesting character and concept, and this serves as a great introduction to the struggles and inner turmoil faced, in a satisfying, well paced adventure.

Some moving points, touching on emotional plot points, but overall a plot and resolution which doesn't feel right

Review of The Vengeance of Morbius by joeymapes21

21 March 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Doesn't capitalise as well on the set up from the previous part, feeling like this stalls, and struggles to ever gain full momentum.

The shock ending is great, even if it doesn't feel satisfying, since the audience know the Doctor can not possibly have died in the fall.

Review of Sisters of the Flame by joeymapes21

21 March 2025

Some great set-up, although Sisterhood of Karn aren't nearly as interesting as in the show. Lucie is used well, and its nice to see more of her character developed as she has been separated from the Doctor.

A lot of good ideas, and the cliff-hanger is cool. But the story feels like a great idea popped into the head, without being expanded much from initial thoughts.
