After the breakneck speed of The Robot Revolution, Lux fixes those issues and slows down a bit with a haunted cinema in 1952 Miami. This was an episode I wasn't particularly excited for, judging by the promo material and trailers, but after watching twice now I'm surprised to say that it's joining 73 Yards as one of the best RTD2 episodes. Everything comes together and just works brilliantly. Firstly, the cast are all on top form. Belinda continues to grow on me and potentially become an all timer companion, with her more grounded appeal. Alan Cumming is amazing as Mr Ring-a-ding, he manages to be actually scary throughout, I could imagine myself as a child being *terrified* of him. Ncuti remains solid as the Doctor, but still never really wow's me, but I think I have come to terms with the fact he is never going to reach my number 1 spot, and that's okay. The plot here feels very deliberate and planned out, with is rare for a RTD2 episode. I'm still deciding how I feel about the whole 'pantheon' idea but it really works in this episode and doesn't distract like it did in The Devil's Chord, where it was too closely tied with The Giggle for my liking. Belinda essentially saved the day (with the help of the cinema guy) which is very refreshing and a return to form. I think the last companion who actually contributed to the solving of the plot was Bill, which was like 8 years ago. I love the whole sequence inside the cinema screen. The animated bits AND the 'fourth wall break'. The in-show fans could've felt really weird but RTD chose to instead lightly poke fun at calling the fans annoying (remember he himself is a fan) but he also chose to go down the route of casting the fans as a diverse group of people, telling us how they became best friends through the show and how they are all accepted in the Doctor Who community. I think it's a very lovely scene, especially how fandom is today where I think we can all forget that we're basically just here to sit and talk about Doctor Who in our spare time. After first watch, I considered it an 8/10, but on rewatch I just... couldn't find any faults with it. It's an enjoyable watch from start to finish, and I am so pleasantly surprised by it, so for that reason I am giving it a 10/10 gothoperas View profile Like Liked 2 12 April 2025 · 691 words Doctor Who Season Two • Episode 1The Robot Revolution gothoperas Spoilers 2 Review of The Robot Revolution by gothoperas 12 April 2025 This review contains spoilers! I have been hesitant going into this series due to my lack of enjoyment of series 14/season 1, but I have gone into it with an open mind, avoiding leaks, trailers and exclusive clips to try and bring my enjoyment back of the show and keep it all fresh. The Robot Revolution is a weird episode to me, it vaguely reminds me of classic who stories like The Sun Makers, with rebels trying to fight against their oppressors, entering the rebels hideouts, cute robot pets, the companion taking a leading role. It's a staple of Doctor Who and always has been. Although it gives me more of the vibe of RTD's/Benjamin Cooks reimagined, colourised edits of classic who. When watching it it feels like I'm watching a colourised version of 1964 story, The Robot Revolution parts 1-4, edited down into 45ish minutes, cutting out vital pieces of information and only including action sequences and necessary exposition, because the entire episode moves way too fast and with completely random moments, seriously what was with the random cat murder? I know there's a scene out there somewhere on the cutting room floor where Belinda interacts with this cat on the way in from work or in the garden, that actually would've added emotional weight onto this otherwise needless cruelty. The general idea of the plot works well, but kind of starts to lose me a little in the third act when RTD starts to throw out a bunch of buzzwords and doesn't really expand on it all that much. Alan as a villain does very little for me because his 2 minutes of screentime at the beginning of the episode failed to convey properly that he was an incel, and more so just gave off the vibe of weird nerd who doesn't fully know how to interact with women, not the vibe of 'hates women and wants to control not only them but entire planets'. It's not until the third act when he's revealed as the villain just how controlling he was of Belinda as teens, and I can't help but feel like moving those scenes to the start of the episode probably would've helped the reveal be a bit less jarring. For me, the best parts of the episode are the small scenes we get of the rebel hideouts, I love the parts of this show where we see small bands of survivors, hiding away trying to figure out how to overthrow their oppressors, and this episode does that really well, but the scenes are too short, and the rebels aren't characterised to their fullest potential. Manny is the rebel with the most lines (he's nice to look at as well), but even he doesn't have much to do rather than sneer and blame Belinda for Sasha 55's death. Now, talking about Belinda. This isn't Varada's first time on the show, but it is her first as a full time companion and I have to say, I am interested by her. My favourite companions have a bit of 'I don't want to be here' energy to them. Tegan, Barbara and now Belinda all fit this bill, and I am interested to see if she is going to keep this element further into this season or if it's going to be thrown away by the start of the next episode. Following on from the last season, this TARDIS team already feels more grown up and mature. They are no longer giggling schoolchildren besties, but now adults who can have grown up conversations. Belinda chastising the Doctor for scanning her DNA without consent stood out to me as something Ruby wouldn't even have considered to be something that could be problematic, or have called out the Doctor for. One of my main criticisms of series 14/season 1 was the lack of conflict between the two main characters, which already seems to be solved one episode into series 15, so if they continue along this route then I may potentially like this season a lot more than the previous. But for now, I give The Robot Revolution a 6/10. Enjoyable, but way too fast paced with a messy third act. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 2 14 January 2025 · 49 words Short Trips - RaritiesThe Toy gothoperas Spoilers Review of The Toy by gothoperas 14 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! nyssas been having bad dreams of traken, which is understandable given the circumstances, however when she finds a jewel in a box she starts having someone elses dreams. its trippy and weird but its nice to see some familiar old faces and establishes a cute little bit of lore. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 0 14 January 2025 · 51 words The Fifth Doctor Adventures Volume 1 • Episode 2Iterations of I gothoperas Spoilers 2 Review of Iterations of I by gothoperas 14 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! this is great at creating very abstract concepts and communicating them in a way thats somewhat understandable. its freaky science fiction with multiple layers. the dialogue between the main characters is witty, the side characters are great and the enemy is bewilderingly complicated in a way that only benefits the story. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 2 13 January 2025 · 84 words The Companion Chronicles S3 • Episode 6The Darkening Eye gothoperas Spoilers Review of The Darkening Eye by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! the story is told from nyssas perspective presumably a while after shes left the tardis in the future, and its got a very depressing vibe. theres some really cool moments like her literal death but i feel like the dar traders are undeveloped and its not really overly explained what their exact purpose is. the story takes a weird turn in the last 15 minutes as well and none of it really meshes well with other elements of the story. not the best companion chronicle. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 0 13 January 2025 · 77 words The Fifth Doctor AdventuresThe Great Beyond gothoperas 4 Review of The Great Beyond by gothoperas 13 January 2025 promising to be an epic 6 part adventure, it just turns out to be a long and unexciting plod. its one of the most disappointing releases from the fifth doctor range in recent years. its overly confusing and doesnt do a great job explaining itself, the concept sounds way better than the way it was actually executed. its 6 parts and yet ive got barely anything to say about it other than the cast do a relatively good job. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 4 13 January 2025 · 105 words The Fifth Doctor Adventures: The Dream Team • Episode 1The Merfolk Murders gothoperas Spoilers 1 Review of The Merfolk Murders by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! a purely engaging and thrilling story from the fifth doctor adventures. its another murder mystery and if we're going by the timeline of serpent in the silver mask -> black orchid -> the merfolk murders then its 3 murder mysteries in a row. but tim foleys writing here makes me deeply care about the entire cast of characters. adric gets a lovely little romance with a guy called henry, nyssa bonds with a soldier over losing their families, the doctor gets to revel in playing detective after some comedic teasing by tegan being very enthusiastic to solve the mystery. its all really well crafted gothoperas View profile Like Liked 1 13 January 2025 · 65 words Classic Who S19 • Serial 5 · (2 episodes)Black Orchid gothoperas Spoilers 2 Review of Black Orchid by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! Have always loved black orchid from the first time i watched it. only 2 parts but very entertaining. part 1 doesn't really do anything to build up the plot. it just sets the scene and its really cosy to watch the doctor playing cricket, meeting ann talbot and the cranleighs, learning about what happened to george cranleigh and having a fancy dress party. a lovely little 2 parter gothoperas View profile Like Liked 2 13 January 2025 · 87 words Main Range • Episode 236Serpent in the Silver Mask gothoperas Spoilers 1 Review of Serpent in the Silver Mask by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! not much to say about this one other than its a standard murder mystery, but that doesnt mean its not good. all a murder mystery really needs is engaging side characters and this has them in spades. its also not really predictable and does a unique twist involving time travel in the reveal of the murderer. one of the most intriguing bits of this audio is a potential romance between tegan and one of the side characters. its a real softer side to tegan that i enjoy gothoperas View profile Like Liked 1 13 January 2025 · 125 words Main Range • Episode 235Ghost Walk gothoperas Spoilers 4 Review of Ghost Walk by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! This story is straight up horror. It's hopeless, it's bleak, it's atmospheric, it's scary. It might be the bleakest story yet. There's a specific moment in part one, where nyssa is held by the, as yet unknown, entity. its a truly spine chilling moment and sarah sutton really sells the moment. one quote in particular from a later part stands out. nyssa develops a close relationship with matthew, the village reverend who falls in love with her. she rejects him and he later accuses of her being a witch. nyssa is betrayed and hurt but the specific line "matthew, is this all because i said no?" hits HARD, especially with her delivery. the ending is delivered perfectly as well. everything gets tied up and explained. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 4 13 January 2025 · 102 words Main Range • Episode 234Kingdom of Lies gothoperas Spoilers 1 Review of Kingdom of Lies by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! It's honestly hilarious. There's not many stories where I can say I'm laughing throughout but this one manages to just be funny, constantly. nyssa shines here as she settles, almost disconcertingly well into her role as nyssa the destroyer, even the doctor is put off by her over enthusiastic performance. the world building itself is done exceedingly well and the main royal couple manage to be fantastic, layered side characters in their own rights. the story almost gives the illusion of being a very cliched- which it kinda is but it also does it in such an entertaining way you dont care. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 1 13 January 2025 · 123 words Main Range • Episode 223Zaltys gothoperas Spoilers Review of Zaltys by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! on my initial listening to this story i was put off my something i couldnt quite put my finger on, but that was almost 3 years ago and upon my relisten it was almost perfect. theres a very clear sense of dread as you put the pieces in place as the story moves along. the side character of sable is a great mix with the more subdued characters of nyssa and the fifth doctor and i dread to think what wouldve happened if she spent most of the story with tegan lmao tegans plot here is almost thriller-esque, and janet (as usual) gives a stellar performance as she teeters on the edge of being caught by vampires. the plot twists are well executed too gothoperas View profile Like Liked 0 13 January 2025 · 92 words Main Range • Episode 222The Contingency Club gothoperas Spoilers Review of The Contingency Club by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! The set up to get to this point is fun, the club setting offering a lot of atmosphere. The ending itself feels like it was a bit too rushed, with part 3 being the generic part to set up the final episode, leading to a duller back half because things don't really connect as well as you'd want them to. This is a phenomenal story with a huge, unique universe threatening enemy. Landing on Gallius Ultima, its very quickly discovered that something is wrong- a ship that had previously gone missing is now returning, and it's not slowing down as it heads towards the planet. This leads to a very tense first part where we're already threatened with imminent death. The story only just keeps getting larger in scope. The Doctor and Tegan are sent light years across space to investigate what destroyed the Kepler. It results in alternate realities, different universes and a creature the likes of which the doctor has never seen before. Before long, the entire universe is threatened by the Star Men. The side characters are especially great. Autumn develops a close bond with Adric and it leads to a pretty heartbreaking ending between the two in a dramatic cruel twist of fate. This stands as one of my favourite Doctor Who stories ever. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 1 13 January 2025 · 111 words Doctor Who – Destiny of the Doctor: The Complete AdventureSmoke and Mirrors gothoperas Review of Smoke and Mirrors by gothoperas 13 January 2025 The Destiny of the Doctor series so far have mostly failed to capture my attention as anything special and this is really no different. The team go to meet Harry Houdini and Tegan is understandably the only one of the companions who actually knows who he is. The story then actually starts and none of it is really... interesting? The villain IS unexpected, and there's a few good moments between Nyssa and Tegan especially when Nyssa is placed in a trance. However I feel like the setting of a funfair is a little underused? It seems like a place you could really vibrantly describe but... it just isn't done that well. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 0 13 January 2025 · 199 words The Audio NovelsPrisoners of London gothoperas Spoilers Review of Prisoners of London by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! Matthew Waterhouse's second audio novel, Prisoners of London, takes the team exactly where they want to go. London, 1982! Well, kind of. Matthews prose here is captivating, the first hour flies by and before you know it, each of the main team are separated by miles which expands the scope of the story monumentally, each with strikingly different locations so that nothing feels stale as you switch between them. Tegan's story here is the most interesting to me, and arguably gets the least amount of detail. She's imprisoned on the moon and does well with the worldbuilding of the planet of London, she also gets the least amount of interesting side characters to interact with whereas the Doctor gets the Emperor and Nyssa and Adric get their own pair of mysterious misfits to try and understand. Emperor Geoffrey Chaucer is a fantastic character. She is flawed and ignorant, but really comes to show she's a good person. The plot takes a turn in the last third, with the introduction of a whole new element that has been teased at since the start. In fact, all the elements introduced from the very beginning all fit together like a satisfying jigsaw puzzle. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 0 13 January 2025 · 106 words Classic Who S19 • Serial 4 · (4 episodes)The Visitation gothoperas Spoilers 2 Review of The Visitation by gothoperas 13 January 2025 This review contains spoilers! I couldn't love this TARDIS team more and each of them shine greatly here. Nyssa shows her technical skills, Adric (barely) manages to fly the TARDIS and Tegan gets controlled (but she does manage to snap out of it!). This is the end of the Doctor's sonic screwdriver too, which does actually have consequences starting from this story. The sets are beautiful, as is the android and the Tereleptil suits are also remarkably well done. gothoperas View profile Like Liked 2 Sorting and filtering coming soon!
