Review of The Fires of Vulcan by The1_Foxy

9 June 2025

When I realised this was a pure historical early on I was very excited to see where it went. The side characters were easy to route for, and felt pretty believable. This is a very Mell focussed story, and it was interesting to see her react to the situation her and the doctor were in, as well as the situation of Roman society as a whole.

Unfortunately I didn’t find the antagonists all that interesting. Their motivations were spelled out explicitly in a way that made them feel pretty one note.

For the first half of the story at least, the doctor is very defeatist about the situation which can be a downer.

Also I’d say (vague spoiler) the ending it pretty predictable and anticlimactic. But I suppose how they get out of the situation isn’t really the point of the story.

Review of What Just Happened? by The1_Foxy

13 May 2025

The format of this one took me way too long to really vibe with. I spend most of the story feeling frustrated instead of intrigued like I should have.

By the time I understood what was going on enough to really feel invested there wasn’t much going on anymore because the building of action was going in reverse.

It doesn’t really feel like this format fits this story, although the story itself would probably be boring without it.

The ending does do a lot to finally make the story feel meaningful, but it doesn’t solve how I felt throughout most of my listening experience.

Review of Rise of the Eukaryans by The1_Foxy

17 April 2025

Mediocre leaning towards bad, honestly. The antagonist is just an uninspired “what if this everyday thing was an evil alien” that doesn’t do anything interesting with the premise after the first few minutes. The moral of the story is also so unsubtle and surface level. This all felt pretty purposeless.

Review of A Dalek Awakens (escape game) by The1_Foxy

17 April 2025

This is the only escape room I’ve ever done so I don’t have much to compare it to but I think it could have been a lot better.

It only consisted of one room and the doctor who theming was pretty limited. The challenges themselves had nothing to do with the show as far as I remember, but were general SiFi ideas.

One of the tasks was actually slightly broken, and from what I’ve heard from other reviewers it’s been left in this state for years.

The last task was also a complete mess that I still don’t even understand after they gave me the answers.

I only managed to complete the room because we were the last people in that day so they just gave us extra time, which was nice of them.

Review of The Final Darkness by The1_Foxy

30 December 2024

It’s just a re telling of the Christmas invasion but from the sycorax perspective, which actually isn’t very interesting, at least how this does it. The perspective character is supposed to be a scribe but nothing about the writting gives that impression. It’s just a worse way of experiencing the Christmas invasion that adds very little new

Review of No Fun at the Fair by The1_Foxy

17 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

Just once could a story about a Raxacoricofallapatorian not be about them being a Slitheen, being evil, and then being brutally murdered without hesitation? This is just another story that pays lip service to the idea just they’re not all evil but continues to use them as a generic baddy character. Rose mistaking a random guy for a Slitheen was at least something.
Also what kind of fun fair has an actual water slide?

Review of Foreshadowing by The1_Foxy

17 December 2024

A funny story with a likeable perspective character. Typical silly 8 + Charley interactions too. Definitely worth a listen if you like low stakes stories like that.

Review of Houdini and The Space Cuckoos by The1_Foxy

8 December 2024

I didn't enjoy the writing style of this. Pretty dumbed down, and sometimes it was a first person stream of consciousness thing that's really not for me. The story was also pretty aimless, could have probably been at least one less part long.

The interactions between The Doctor and Houdini where fun though, so that's a positive.

Review of One Last Try by The1_Foxy

24 November 2024

An intriguing story throughout. Bit confusingly written at times but it comes together and makes sense in the end.
Might need a second skim read to fully get it, at least I did, but I was tired when I read this.

Review of Doctor Who: The Time Meddler by The1_Foxy

22 November 2024

Maybe it's just because I've watched the serial so many times that I enjoyed this slightly different version so much but I do highly recommend this if like me you're a big fan of The Time Meddler serial. It's able to expand on the feelings and motivations of the side characters that makes the scenes focussing on them so much more interesting. I never got bored reading this book, where as the serial definitely has moments where it loses me.

Review of The Spaceship Graveyard by The1_Foxy

16 November 2024

If you’ve always wanted to read a doctor who chose your own adventure book, that’s too bad cause this isn’t it.

Instead of making choices for your self insert character 90% of the time you’re deciding ridiculous things like what’s in the next room you go into, which I feel takes all the fun out of the concept. It’s hard to feel like this is a coherent setting when, well, it just isn’t one, or that you’re a character in the story when you don’t actually do much at all as that character. A lot of very meaningless choices as well, that essentially lead to the same outcome.

You can’t even lose the game which is a shame, because some kind of bad ending might have at least been a little interesting. Oh yeah the story isn’t any good either.

The only positive to this I can see is that it’s a very short book so you won’t waste too much of your time reading it.

Review of Rescue by The1_Foxy

9 November 2024

This short story is a backstory for the character seen accompanying the Rani in Dimensions in time.

On a deserted sandy planet the writing  paints a vivid and engaging description of all the misfortune that fall upon the lead character in this unforgiving world. It was definitely one of those stories I did not want to put down, even to write notes for this review.

I will say a lot of things that happen go unexplained, which left me confused but not in a bad way. I could see that being more a negative thing for other people though.

Definitely read this only if you’ve watched dimensions in time first, because without that context you’ll be left even more confused.

Review of Pinball Wizard by The1_Foxy

9 November 2024

This review contains spoilers!

Has a fun concept and I like how the story comes full circle in the end. The plot isn’t anything special, but I didn’t get bored reading it.

Review of A Delicate Operation by The1_Foxy

8 November 2024

The story concept of traveling inside a living body while being cell sized is very very over done and this story doesn’t add anything new to the formula.

Well actually it does add a new kind of white blood cell because they drew them completely wrong, but then again it was inside an alien so what am I even talking about?

Review of Regeneration by The1_Foxy

8 November 2024

For a first episode it doesn’t give much to be invested in. The characters basic motivations are all established, but it didn’t make me really care about them. The world building doesn’t feel coherent yet either, which makes some of the characters motivations harder to follow.

The child characters didn’t appeal to me at all, and they make up most of the main cast it seems. The dialogue and acting was often very strange.

Every time the main alien villains of the episode moved they became really weird and jittery, which was very distracting and made scenes with them hard to follow.

There were, at least, a few enjoyable parts, mostly just that I found the professor to be a likeable character, and I like this K9 design… which may not be a popular opinion.

If watching something a bit terrible for a laugh is what you’re looking for I’d recommend this first episode at least. I can’t speak for any of the others, I only watched this cause it’s free on YouTube.

Review of The Hungry Bomb by The1_Foxy

7 November 2024

Although It uses two species making a truce with each other as the set up for the story, it doesn’t really explore any of those themes. The story is very basic, with one or two small unique ideas.

I say don’t go out of your way to read this. Unless maybe you’re just desperate for 3 and Sarah Jain content, then maybe this will do something for you.

Review of Briefly Noted by The1_Foxy

5 November 2024

The story starts off feeling quite mean spirited with having the doctors and his companions complain and make fun of each other for the first two pages and doesnt get any more interesting after that.

The format shows everything the antagonists are doing along side what the The Doctor and companions are doing, which removes any of the minimal amount of intrigue that could be gotten from this plot.

Not an enjoyable story or enjoyable characterisation of the main characters. Wouldn't recommend
