I love a good vampire story. I am so happy about the great dynamic that the Doctor and Yaz have in this. It really makes the story feel alive. The side cast was fun, appropriate for the story for sure. They all had a kind of Agatha Christie feel to them in a way. And I actually do love the fact that we start right off with actually giving Yaz and the Doctor some personal struggles,- and potential setup for more of that. I am so so glad that they didn't shy away from doing that and I hope they keep on walking along that route. It was definetly a good start. And very important as well; It definetly made me excited for more Pocketwatch View profile Like Liked 4 13 May 2025 · 120 words Classic Who S22 • Serial 3 · (2 episodes)The Mark of the Rani Pocketwatch 1 Review of The Mark of the Rani by Pocketwatch 13 May 2025 Considering this episodes reputation, I was actually really surprised about how much I liked this episode. I'm a sucker for any kind of renegade Time Lord, and getting the Rani and the Master as a double deal just was a total pleasure to watch. The two of them - and especially the three of them, whenever the Doctor is there aswell - are just a really great combination. The story itself was also more than fine. Nothing that was shockingly innovative, but the plot did it's job in functioning as a plot, and that's all I'm asking. At times it definetly dragged a little, but nothing that bothered me too badly. Overall, probably my second favourite serial of the season! Peri and the Doctor finally feel like they don't want to jump at each other's throats like every five minutes (both literally and figuratively), which I admittedly really enjoyed. To be fair, I also thought Attack of the Cybermen was fine, but in this episode, I actually also liked the side cast and the world-building a lot, compared to the prior one. At some points, the pacing felt a little off, but for the most part, I felt like the episode ran along smoothly and fit well together. The Doctor really got some nice Doctor-y moments, and Peri got some time to shine aswell. Usually, with the season one stuff, I find myself kind of indifferent, but their whole Journey through quite a range of different terrains was a joy. I also thought the premise itself was rather interesting, and the longer season one goes on, the more I find myself really adoring Ian and Barbara. I like that Barbara is getting quite a few moments here. I like her a lot more here than I did in An Unearthly Child and Dalek! This story was definitely my favourite one in the UNIT stranded series yet. It just carried such a weight and yet such a positive lightness at the same time. I love that this set gets the opportunity to get more time to explore its characters in such a personal way, and yet still feels entirely like a Doctor Who episode. It was also really something to see what becomes of the people that usually just stand on the sidelines. I loved the Brigadeer and the interactions he got with the Doctor, and I adored the heartfelt moment the Doctor had with Helen in the end. It actually made me cry a little bit. I love that Stranded also tends to question the actual impact that the Doctor has on the people around him and if it's really a net positive. I know a lot of stories do that, but with this one, I just felt like it was handled in a way that is worth pointing out. Overall, this piece was just everything I could've wished for.
