Review of Love & Monsters by KieranCooper

2025 REWATCH

  • This is not a terrible story, it’s just weak, I’m sure that might mean the same to people lol.
  • I find the concept of the story very interesting, I still think it should be a UNIT interviewing/interrogating Elton. But it transcends to modern social media culture now, so I guess it makes sense.
  • However, I felt less inclined to watch; I had less time for it on the current rewatch, if that makes sense. I’d defend it’s weirdness and uniqueness in the past, but I think its novelty is slowly running thin on me.
  • That’s not to say there isn’t genuinely some beautiful moments, the whole Jackie section, is marvellous, and the flashbacks of Elton’s Mum is heartbreaking. The realism of the LINDA and the characterisation of the group is so sweet.
  • It’s the ending I raise an eyebrow at, the audacity to have the line about a love life is forever going to be questionable

2025 REWATCH (Review posted on both episodes)

  • I always look forward to this story, I just love it so much. The set up, the ideas, the design, the music, the characters, the everything!
  • The Ood and conception are brilliant; they serve (literally) a purpose and look iconic to the show. While the Beast is amazing and perfectly voice-acted, the CGI for the physical body still looks amazing today. If they could bring the beast back, do it, please!
  • Bringing a paranormal/demonology trope into the show is an instant win in my books. I'm always likely to be interested if that's where the story is going to explore
  • They pack so much into this story, You explore a lot, have time for some deeper questions, get a bit existential, and have enough time for some action. It's amazingly put together
  • I feel the side cast is equally as great. We get so much time with them, but with 2 random soldiers, we never learn their names of. I felt myself drawn to Ida; I always do. I like her character

Review of The Idiot’s Lantern by KieranCooper

31 March 2025

2025 REWATCH

  • It's a light, easy watch, a  period piece with a very memorable visual gimmick that most casual fans always remember, too
  • Stylistically, the way this story is filmed and put together makes it fresh and adds some flavour to it
  • I think in this story, David put a bit too much enthusiasm into the role. He was shouting and pronouncing every line, like gees calm down
  • The Wire itself is a great concept and eerie in design, and the way the faceless victims are left is nasty to look at, so hats off to everyone in their creation
  • It's just the Connolly family that I think needs more time. Quick-fire some smaller scenes to add details. Plus, in that ending scene, Rose gets Tommy to try and forgive his Dad, but you know, give it a day or so, right?

Review of The Age of Steel by KieranCooper

31 March 2025

2025 REWATCH (Posted on both parts)

    • This is the story, especially since listening to 'Spare Parts, that I wouldn't mind skipping. not sure it does it for me. I love the Cybermen, but not this tale for them
    • Mixed feelings about Mickey. Not that he was bad in this story- he was great, but it's taken so long for him to get this material. Serves Rose and 10 right for taking him for granted
    • The solution to the story seemed a tad underwhelming; just a quick text, sure? But the escape of the Cyber-Factory at least made for a thrilling ending
    • Maybe if this story had a hint of more body horror, something I know the show can't exactly dive into greatly, but something a little more like Ashad, it would have been cool. It's a Cyberman genesis story, like Go Wild
    • It was nice to see an alternate, Jackie, Pete, and Mickey, give the actors a chance to do something a little different

Review of The Girl in the Fireplace by KieranCooper

29 March 2025

2025 REWATCH

  • I do like this episode, I genuinely do, but I have found myself not wanting to watch it as much. It was a high-ranking story last time, but I found myself enjoying this rewatch less
  • I often find the Doctor + new character romances annoying, some stories can handle it well and this one, just makes you assume there was a strong romantic attachment between them, despite spending very little time together, I think it's how I understand SM's writing it's romantically dark, and these elements are evident in a lot of his stories, especially the ones pre-his era
  • Love the clockwork droids. They are beautifully designed inside and out
  • It's a shame that this is Mickey's first trip in the TARDIS, and I can't help but feel he was a little sidelined. I think he deserved more of a focus
  • I think the more I watch this story, the more I come to believe that Sophia Myles is not that good an actress, but that's just my personal judgment. The child actress did a better job

Review of School Reunion by KieranCooper

29 March 2025

2025 REWATCH

  • I genuinely used to find this episode as slog, I would put it down to it being THE episode that always got re-runs on Watch / W / Whatever the channel is called now, but having rewatched it invigorated my love for this story
  • Krilliant and Mr Finch are brilliant villains, wonderfully acted and scary. The design is great
  • Sarah Jane Smith and K9, the only pair of companions that would have made the perfect reunion episode, and boy do they deliver. It's great material for Rose and Mickey. Bringing genuine closure to Sarah Jane, that last scene now brings tears to my eyes, which didn't before. Maybe I'm getting soft, lol
  • It's also one hell of a thrillride, gets straight into the action, and doesn't give in, even if the circumstances are very convenient, like the school blowing up
  • Balances the cast beautifully, and I love it. shows that a bigger TARDIS team can work

Review of Tooth and Claw by KieranCooper

29 March 2025

2025 REWATCH

  • I love the whole concept: Queen Vic and a werewolf in Scotland. It is so much fun!
  • The energy of this episode is electric and just gets higher and higher. It's gloomy and thrilling. gotta admire the writing and directing
  • The CGI itself for the wolf is genuinely not that bad and still looks pretty good all these years later, especially when it crashes through the glass ceiling
  • The only issue I'd say is that overly dramatic cold open with the monks. Did they really need to fly through the air just to beat up some farmers? Too much, you could say, but I guess it keeps you watching.
  • I genuinely think this shows the perfect dynamic between 10 and Rose, If 'The Christmas Invasion' and 'New Earth' couldn't do it as well, this episode early on does it brillaintly

Review of New Earth by KieranCooper

29 March 2025

2025 Rewatch

  • While I don't think it's a solid story, I have a soft spot for it. It's not offensive to watch; it just doesn't feel so believable and echoes the message of the first trip to the 'New Earth' period of the show.
  • I do like the concept and the great ideas, some funky and some simplistic; just the execution is the true problem
  • How does Cassandra know how to do so much? Where did the cat nun on the ladder come from? When did the sick learn to talk?
  • Cassandra, just like that,t realised she had to die? I don't think she was shown what it means to have her time
  • The solution of using those melted ice pop bags of coloured juice in the lift, I guess, makes sense by it spreading from hand to hand and steam propping up from every single touch was the most unbelievable thing

Review of The Christmas Invasion by KieranCooper

28 March 2025

2025 Rewatch

  • I don't know what this episode is about, but I have no interest in it. As a Christmas episode or a general story, it's not one for me
  • The Sycorax are cool; they look awesome! But I dare say wasted a little, they make demands stand around and one of them battles the Doctor, yeah? okay cool
  • I always wonder about the creative choice behind creating Harriet Jones, making her a likable character, then making her unlikable or have the Doctor take a different approach to her
  • I would feel slightly hypocritical for liking Castrovalva for having the 5th Doctor out of action, but I found this a strange concept to have the doctor out of it for a bit, considering the shorter runtime. I know it's Tennant, and he commands any room he walks into. It just feels a little unnecessary
  • How is it that the Sycorax know to attack the Tyler family with Christmas-themed robots, Santas, and a tree? a little bit on the nose and fun, but I don't buy it lol

Review of The Parting of the Ways by KieranCooper

26 March 2025

2025 Rewatch (Will post on both episodes)

  • I love the wild and bold choice to bring iconic reality shows of the time and turn them into deadly games. still such an iconic idea, and it feels dated as well, but beautifully so. It would be so weird trying to do that today. What shows would they use? Love Island? The Chase?
  • However, overall, I didn't feel much interest in the story as I used to. I wonder if that's because it doesn't have that grandeur most finales I'm expected to have. It has that feel of just another adventure. I know that changes by the finale episode, but vibes don't always be there
  • During my classic rewatch I can't help that this feels a little like a combination of Vengenace on Varos and Revelation of the Daleks for certain plot points. which is interesting because they are very separate, but I can't help but think of them
  • The Daleks are pretty great in this story, killing tons of people, a bit insane
  • 2 minor points I don't feel so set with
    • Why did the Doctor have to kiss Rose?
    • Why didn't the Doctor put Lynda on the TARDIS, too? Felt like he was interested in having her onboard but only decided to save Rose fully? RIP LYNDA we love you

Review of Boom Town by KieranCooper

26 March 2025

2025 Rewatch

  • I've always had good fun with this story. It's a cute follow-up to the Slitheen 2-parter before, and whilst very much a filler, it is just some fun to have developing the cast a little
  • Gives us one of the best quartets of the show, 9 + Rose + Jack + Mickey, one appearing together in 1 episode, criminal
  • I love the scenes between Margaret and 9 in the restaurant; they are beautifully written, and such strong dialogue between them. Can only think in the moment how weird for other customers it must have been if they eavesdropped accidentally.
  • It's far more character-based, which I feel does ground the show a bit, considering in the past few it's been heavier with the scarier visuals and more sci-fi. great to give some variety
  • This episode has a great humour to it, I would definitely say it is the comedic episode of the series.

Review of The Doctor Dances by KieranCooper

26 March 2025

2025 Rewatch (Post the same review for all parts)

  • This story is still a classic, even after 20 years. It's such a high-concept horror thrillride
  • Moffatisms galore. You can hear him in his scripts, and I dare say they become a little distracting
  • The simplistic use of the gas mask is such a brilliant idea, weaponising something already creepy to make it worse
  • Jack seems much rougher around the edges under SM's writing, and I dare say more likable. There's a better twinkle in his eye. It's a shame SM never wrote for him again
  • That old woman with the regrown leg is an absolute icon

Review of Father’s Day by KieranCooper

26 March 2025

2025 Rewatch

  • I used to feel this story was a bit of a slog. I know it's power, sentiment, and brilliance, but I remember feeling like this slowed down my energy. I have changed that opinion, I savour its creeping edge of existentialism
  • Billie acts her heart out; it is truly her best episode of the series, highly emotional and moving
  • The Reapers look awesome, bat-like, and with a brilliant sound design. I genuinely think the GCI holds up to this day. I want them to come back
  • This episode just has a shroud of bleakness, harrowingness, and despair, It is eerie as hell; I love it.
  • I think the placement for this story is perfectly fitted, especially after the little Adam arc

Review of The Long Game by KieranCooper

26 March 2025

2025 Rewatch

  • I already know this is considered a dud of the series, and for a dud, it's not that bad, but it's nothing compared to the highs of this series. It's got a bit to compete with
  • I understand this story centers around fake news, but I'm not sure how prevalent that idea comes through. It could be stronger in delivery. I don't remember seeing a smidge of that until Suki goes up to floor 500, and you don't get for a while yet
  • The Adam side plot, whilst not the most integral to the story other than adding to the threat of the story, was fun. It was him exploring the future, and he revealed himself as more of an idiot than he says he is
  • The Jagrafess itself isn't a major villain, just a blob in the ceiling. Could you have at least given a couple of lines to tell us where it came from or what its done?
  • Resolution feels so quick, and it's explained to you with voice-over in such a slap-dash manner, making a little forgettable.

Review of Dalek by KieranCooper

24 March 2025

2025 Rewatch

  • I have a mixed love for this story. I know it's great, of course it is. But I never want to watch as bad as everything else. I wonder if it's related to it being a Dalek story (I'm not a big Dalek fan) or because the whole set looks so dull and dry.
  • Adam Mitchell is a nice addition I guess? Not a huge fan, could have done without him or at least him staying an episode longer
  • Henry and Goddard are bold and brilliant characters for the story and really shine, that is also thanks to a limited cast of prevalent characters
  • A lone Dalek story is great, bringing out the best of the classic alien as well as developing the Doctor
  • This is a big story for the season, character-driven and beautifully shown, the development of the Doctor and the impact Rose has had on him is evident

Review of World War Three by KieranCooper

24 March 2025

2025 Rewatch (This review with be on both parts)

  • Honestly, I feel a sigh every time I come to review this story, but I have to give it some credit, the scope of the story is huge and it feels layered as hell
  • The political commentary is clear as day and a little funny, if not insulting to those of a bigger builds
  • I always feel a sense of aggravation that they never really explore the stuff Mickey went through any further than they did
  • I also ache for Jackie, she goes through so much in this story and is just left once again alone. I think it's part of my mindset, but I wished Rose explained it to her more, feel so sorry for her
  • The only issue with the Slitheen is the literal contrast between their practical suits and the CGI, its quite funny. When in suits they travel slower than a human, but the CGI travels 3 times as fast

Review of The Awakening by KieranCooper

24 March 2025

  • Some key concepts are going on here that I think the story misses out on fully developing, the supposed psychic energy made by LARPing in full costume, and reenactment in the right environment is a paranormal phenomenon that really could have been a big part of the story
  • I think this story is maybe too short, 1 one part really could have had a little more time to let chaos carry out
  • Personally think Jane and Will could have made good companions, such character to them, especially Jane her dynamic with the Doctor was excellent
  • The mallus looks evil as heck, and I wished they used the symbolic face more, representatives of evil everywhere it's a creepy design that could have been used vastly more than it was
  • I just love the vibe of this story, echoes of the past, echoes of the paranormal, set in a tiny village. It's great, but probably needed a redraft

Review of The King’s Demons by KieranCooper

24 March 2025

  • Even for 2 parts, I turned off completely
  • I found it boring in many aspects, none of the cast seemed interesting
  • Kamelion is the most interesting part of the story and it appears in like 1/10 of the entire story
  • Like with most of them, I don't have a particularly big interest in Master stories
  • Not even the fight scenes were as good, as Pertwee's were vastly superior

Review of Black Orchid by KieranCooper

24 March 2025

  • Like Midsomer Murders meets Doctor Who is perfectly dramatic and good fun
  • Despite Tegan's insistent want to go home, it's truly great to see her relax and have a good time
  • This story perfectly makes use of its time frame and doesn't drag, a story that works well with it's parameters.
  • It's sweet to get a non-alien threat, it's refreshing but unfortunate the villain is someone with a representative visual psychical disability and they not only are murderous and insane but they also don't get the help they need
  • I like the little added element of Nyssa's doppelganger, adds that little bit of spice to the story, they really need to do that in the modern era

Review of Warriors’ Gate by KieranCooper

24 March 2025

  • For a start, this story is too long, could have easily been 2 or 3 parts
  • I'm a little confused, but it's got some spooky elements to it I enjoyed, but most of it is lost on me
  • What does Adric do? press a button, and hide for most of the story. Then his line delivery with that satellite-looking device (beyond terrible)
  • Romana's exit feels a little illuded to but does feel very sudden, though her performance is great in this story
  • I do adore the cliff-hanger to episode 2, the scream and angle, perfection
