Review of The Zygon Invasion by Jann

New Who Review #124

The Zygon Invasion

This story was boring. It's another zygon story directly working as a sequel to Day of the Doctor which is really cool. I like how all this started because of Missy killing Osgood in death in heaven it really connects the dots well. Zygons are never my favourite villains and their stories always rate low for me because I just don't find them interesting. The reveal that Clara has been captured and there's a Zygon clara out there and ready to kill is cool. I don't think this Should've been a two parter because it drags it on a bit. It's nice to have Kate back again because when is it not. There isn't much else to say so. 5/10

Review of The Woman Who Lived by Jann

The Woman Who Lived

This one was alright. It's another case of part one was better but it's series 9 so it's to be expected. I liked how it was very different from the first part taking place a few centuries later. I like how it carries on the story of Ashildr / Me and how she's living with Immortality. Sam Swift was one of the highlights here he was a side character for most of it but he ended up becoming immortal too. His comedy was funny and the casting was brilliant. Now time for some negatives. The design of Leandro was rubbish he is basically a big lion and didn't fit the story at all. It felt like putting a zygon in night terrors. It wouldn't work at all. I felt a bit bored of this and it was mainly all just chatting between Me & the doctor the entire time it was very dull. Overall an ok story but I felt bored but it had a good idea. 6/10

Review of The Girl Who Died by Jann

The Girl Who Died

This story was good. It's a viking story and normally I don't really like anything with Vikings but this was surprisingly good. Part one and two of these are very different almost two different story's. The doctor teaching the village people how to fight was funny and the names he gave them too. The big snake dragon thing at the end was cool and this episode was meant to be a big blockbuster story but sadly the budget didn't extend far enough to make it happen which is a shame. The doctor also realises why he chose this face. This is the face of Caecillius from the Fires of Pompeii all the way back in series 4. I like how they address that because it ties it up neatly and tells us that the doctor even needs reminding that he's the man who saves people it's really good. Ahsildr also gets made immortal by the doctor which is a very big mistake and I personally don't like the fact he did that. It's bad enough with Jack being immortal we don't need another. Overall a good story that has a good idea but could've been so much more. 7/10

Review of Before the Flood by Jann

Before the Flood

This story was alright. I did prefer part one because I felt myself get slightly bored during part two. I love the rock theme in this and that cold open was honestly amazing. I love when the doctor breaks the 4th wall and this was a perfect example of that. We even got the rock theme played by Peter Capaldi himself. Part two was way too confusing for my brain to follow along which is why I got lost and just stopped really caring which is never what I should be feeling during any story. The death of O Donnell was sad because she was the best side character in this. The Fisher King itself was honestly scary and had a good design. The reveal that the doctor ghost was just a hologram takes away from the cliffhanger but sure I guess. Also I love Clara's outfit in this it's so adorable. Overall a confusing story that has a good idea but you can get lost in part two. 6/10

Under the Lake

This story was good. This is one of the better stories from the run of two parters and definitely is nice to get through the pain. I like whenever doctor who does ghosts and this time it does them well. The design of the ghosts were actually pretty creepy and the story being set under water is actually a great setting for a ghost story. I like how we get a disabled character because it's always nice to get some recognition in doctor who. Making her the smartest one is so nice too. I can't think of anything else to talk about so let's move on. 8/10

Review of The Witch’s Familiar by Jann

The Witch's Familiar

Part two to this dalek story. It was alright. It's hard for me to write reviews for 2 parters because I cover most of it in part one. But I like how it brings every dalek back that's cool. Davros' plan was so messed up and I like that because it shows how evil the daleks can be. Having clara be a dalek is really funny because it calls back to how we first met her in asylum of The daleks. I didn't like how the doctor pulled davros out of his chair to make a point and a joke that was not right at all and shouldn't have been included. Overall an ok story with good call backs and a good setting. 5/10

Review of The Magician’s Apprentice by Jann

The Magician's Apprentice

This story was pretty dull. It's another dalek story and this time we are on skaro. The doctor gave Missy his confession dial which is the big thing this series because he thinks he's dying soon. I like that we have Davros back for the first time since Series 4, and the doctor actually saw him as a child. It's very cool to be on Skaro for the first time in the revival. This is one of those rare series where there is no sonic at all instead we have the sonic Sunglasses which are genuinely so cool but I will grow to miss the sonic. Having Missy back was cool and she is beginning to turn good but that won't fully happen till next series. I don't really like series 9 there are a few stories that I do like but there will be a big decrease in love for these stories compared to the huge amount of love I gave last series. Overall an okay story that takes us to skaro for the first time in the revival and brings back davros. 5/10

Review of Last Christmas by Jann

Last Christmas ❄️

This story was pretty boring. It's doctor who's take on Alien and with that description you'd think it would be good. But it's a whole lot of nothing. The doctor and clara are trapped in a never ending dream and slowly dying to a creature called a Dream Crab. There are some funny scenes in this with Santa and the doctor having the best chemistry and it was entertaining to watch it's probably the highlight of the episode. The scene where the doctor is flying a sleigh was cool and led nicely into everyone waking up. The ending with clara was beautiful and was intended to be the way she left the show but obviously she didn't but it's still beautiful none the less. The music in that scene was great and worked so well. Ending on a tangerine was nice because as 10 once said "you go through all those gifts and right at the end is a satsuma" even though in this case it's a tangerine...anyway. overall an ok Christmas special that was intended to be a companion exit until it wasn't. 5/10

Review of Death in Heaven by Jann

Death In Heaven

This story was good. I do prefer part one of this but part 2 has some highlights. We get kate back for a little bit of this. It's always nice to have kate in a story. We also get a surprise return from the Brigadier that was lovely but because I haven't seen classic I'm not really attached to him yet. Missy was chaotic in this and I love her for that. Missy is my second favourite incarnation of the master (Just behind Sacha) making the doctor president of the world was funny. I didn't like how the doctor and clara left each other lying. It feels like their friendship is built on lies and It's not good. Having a mid credits scene was really cool because that's a first. We see santa claus in that and I just couldn't stop laughing first time I saw this. Overall a good second part to a great story about missy and the Cybermen. 8/10

Dark Water

This story was good. It's the first two parter in a long while so that's nice to have. It's a good cyberman story that's actually really dark. The whole concept of the Dead remain conscious is horrifying and gives me chills. Having Danny die in this is sad because I quite like Danny but it was the only way to get the doctor and clara to the "afterlife" the reveal that missy is the master was so good back in 2014 I remember being speechless over that. Overall a great story which holds a very dark concept. 9/10
