Review of The Mind of Evil by HephaestusLeo

A good, fun story that admittedly feels like its full six parts in runtime thanks to limited locations.

Review of The Halloween Apocalypse by HephaestusLeo

16 June 2025

This review contains spoilers!

For some people, a bad finale can ruin an entire series - I am not one of those people. This has been the case both within this show (I adore Season 8 despite Death in Heaven, and Season 14/15 despite their middling to bad finales), and with other shows (see: Lost, GoT). I think, sincerely, that Flux retrospectives are hurt by the fact that the final two parts frankly aren't very good.

While I understand that, to some, Flux is meant entirely in earnest as one six part story similar to old classic greats like the Talons of Weng-Chiang - but to me, it's simply a more compressed six episode arc. When I view it through that lens, I can't see The Halloween Apocalypse as anything but excellent. It's genuinely exciting, beautiful, well shot, hilarious, enthralling and horrifying all in equal measures. Seeing the Doctor bond so much with Yaz gives us the humanity and character led moments I feel were often lacking in previous seasons - and, while I admit my own potential bias for a companion so intrinsically linked with my home town, Dan exudes a certain realness and realistic core (while being incredibly funny) that allows me to connect to him in a way I'd so desperately wanted to connect to Graham or Ryan.

Karvanista - and, frankly, the Lupari as a whole, is a fantastic addition to the show too. It's something that feels so obviously great as a concept that it's a mystery that it hadn't been attempted before, and the effects work here (and Craige Els' acting) bring it entirely to life. I really, really hope we see more of him in Big Finish - especially with the Fugitive Doctor.

In just one episode that's frankly overstuffed with concepts, they all manage to be fleshed out in a way that provides them with sufficient narrative purpose and fulfilment in of themselves, while fully posessing you with the need to learn more about them all. It inserts that mystery into the show that the Cartmel Masterplan desired to do, with the drive of a showrunner who actually wants to see it all through. In the introduction to this review, I already alluded to the fact that I (and many others) do not think Flux sticks the landing - but I feel that is in no way the fault of this episode, and I feel the questions asked are still doors wide open for the Whoniverse to answer in equally enthralling ways in the future. I adore the Halloween Apocalypse, and I adore the idea of Flux - and, to me, the two are intangible, with The Halloween Apocalypse cramming the planting and germinating of the seed of that arc into just one fourty five minute episode.

I understand how it could be overwhelming and too fast-paced for some - but for me, it works. For me, it's a fast paced drama that matches the stakes with the vibe of the entire episode, landing the punch of a universe ending threat that the show ill-fatedly aims for so often. For that, I can never praise this episode enough.

Review of Colditz by HephaestusLeo

11 June 2025

A super mindf**ky, machiavellian scheme from the fantastic 7 and Ace again. Tennant plays a genuinely vile villain here, and all the characters are fleshed out incredibly. Also, another fantastic Big Finish Pseudo-Historical!

Review of The Eye of the Scorpion by HephaestusLeo

10 June 2025

Absolutely fantastic story, expanding the tardis team and offering another absolutely brilliant pseudo-historical to 5's repertoire. The Egyptian politics are interesting, the sci-fi additions are used really well, and we get the first instance of Big Finish having a doctor-lite episode with Part 2. While I understand the complaints with Five and Peri "weakening the sacrafice of Caves of Androzani", I think we'd be depriving ourselves of an incredible dynamic without the two together - and the sacrafice becomes reframed within the friendship they now have, while still being appreciated through the lens of TV canon.

All that is to say - this is a must listen.

Review of Bloodtide by HephaestusLeo

10 June 2025

A perfectly fine story, that ultimately suffers from basically just being an adaptation of Doctor Who and the Silurians. That said, everything with Charles Darwin and Evelynn is great, and Sixie is as good as ever.

Review of The Ambassadors of Death by HephaestusLeo

7 June 2025

Really great episode - can take a while to get going, and the level of action is perhaps overly ambitious, but the fantastic soundtrack, constantly developing intrigue and general vibe of the episode gives it this sort of mature subterfuge vibe that you don't really see elsewhere in the show. Pertwee's Doctor is commonly compared to James Bond - and nowhere is that more evident than in this episode. Genuinely a great time, all things considered - though I do wish Liz got more to do.

Review of The Robots of Death by HephaestusLeo

Godspeed, D84 my beloved. Genuinely fantastic episode - brilliant set design and costuming, pretty good pacing, great characterisation of Leela and a thoroughly enjoyable plot, too. Little aspects like the sandstorm mining, mentions of previous expeditions, the Robophobia and the general extensiveness of the set really make it feel like a lived in world. Possibly my only complaint is that some of the crew die off before we can know much about them, and the episode ends rather incredibly abruptly - like they knew they were running out of air time. Still, incredible episode!

Review of The Stones of Venice by HephaestusLeo

7 May 2025

The Stones of Venice has a somewhat meandering plot with a frankly obvious plot twist - and yet I couldn't help but love it. It's deeply theatrical, dripping in atmosphere and worldbuilding, playing out almost like a historical despite its future setting and sprinkling of sci-fi elements. There's an air of gothic fairy tale about the whole adventure, and Charley really gets a chance to come into her own as a character worthy of being a protagonist. Good stuff!

Review of The Genocide Machine by HephaestusLeo

I really wanted to like this, but honestly, it's a bit of a snoozefest. It spends way too much time doing absolutely nothing, with lackluster worldbuilding, lackluster characters and setup for negative payoff.
