Review of More than a Messiah by EBP

13 June 2025

Just so baffled. So many questions. What was going on here? Why did this happen? Who woke up and said “I can finally make my Six/Ace slash pairing canon?”

It was competently shot at least. Back when Bill knew the people who had the sauce. Most modern BBV makes this look like the Mona Lisa.

Review of Chasing the Dawn by EBP

7 June 2025

I thought this one was good. Definitely interesting to approach with the question of “would this have changed if the Doctor was a woman?” rather than merely if it was a different incarnation. The drama was pretty solid betweenEleven and Earhart. I wanna know more aboutthose parasites.

Also, does the TARDIS not have tampons? Or did I gloss over that inadvertently?

Review of That’s All Right, Mama by EBP

3 June 2025

Damn you, Paul Magrs. This story is so sad. Like it's good that the whole preserving history thing is still a piece of the Doctor, but to use the bond between Elvis and his mother as an example for that and especially in how her death had such a long ripple effect on him makes this story heartbreaking. Quite possibly one of the best Thirteenth Doctor stories. Magrs for showrunner, I said it.

Review of The Reality War by EBP

2 June 2025

Absolutely baffling. Given the exterior circumstances (Disney stalling on renewing for a third season) I get why that is, but even if they did renew early most of this is a bit confusing. Why does the Doctor suddenly care about Poppy, a daughter that never existed originally, when he's just escaped what could essentially be a fascist world that (briefly) erased major parts of his identity? And what to do with the lumping of Poppy - now human and not Time Lord - onto Belinda, as if it was all normal? It's all so baffling to me. I sat there and felt a headache come on watching it. That's not even talking about the regeneration, either.

Nice to see Thirteen at least.

Review of The Story Demon by EBP

19 May 2025

Admittedly bummed the villain is just a Dalek, but the worldbuilding here is interesting.

Review of Dimensions in Time by EBP

I marked out when K9 showed up. Totally 90s camp, and a blast to watch - those Troughton and Hartnell renders are egregious, though. Yikes!

Review of The Sensorites by EBP

15 May 2025

The problem with the Sensorites is that it starts off really strong with the buildup to the reveal of what they look like and then it sputters a bit with the whole "don't trust the outsider conflict". Like the message about not believing xenophobia is great, but it could have ran along a little faster.

Review of The Aztecs by EBP

15 May 2025

I find this one kind of interesting, partly because it puts Barbara on a really cool pedestal for the serial as a high priestess of the Aztec civilization and partly because it’s the first one I really feel like asks the question “can we as the Doctor and his companions change history?” in a way that isn't like with the Tribe of Gum.

The answer is, well… no. Which makes sense, but it’ll be neat to revisit this stance on the idea between this serial and the point where Donna Noble accidentally renames gravity to be “mavity.” I feel like this could have moved a little faster like The Keys of Marinus did, but for a four-part serial it’s alright.

Review of What I Did On My Holidays By Omo Esosa by EBP

9 May 2025

I think it's a nice little environmental story. Fifteen is really written well here, like that feels like a good portrayal of the Doctor from the point of view of an outsider. I hope Inua Ellems writes more for the series beyond this and the upcoming episode. He has talent, and new talent helps keep the Whoniverse strong.

Review of Lucifer by EBP

Really weird way to integrate the Bible mythos while sounding like a kid making it up as he goes, but okay!

No score on this because I wrote it. I'm sort of proud of it.

The mental image of Giles getting his ass beat is sending me. Cool and mysterious, huh?

Review of Auton by EBP

2 January 2025

A slow burn in only fifty-seven minutes seems silly. There's very little Auton action in this one, but makes for a great depiction of UNIT as an SCP-style task force.

Review of Winner Takes All by EBP

2 January 2025

This one is a pretty strong Ninth Doctor adventure that tackles more modern technology and intertwines it well with a sinister alien plot. I have to say that this novel really does a good job capturing the dialogue and feel of Series 1  - which only leads me to ask: why isn't Jac Rayner writing on the show? If you have to grab one Nine novel, this is a strong contender. Also has a great audiobook read by Camille Coduri.

Review of The Weapon and the Warrior by EBP

30 December 2024

Claudia Christian is a great narrator. Not quite the same vibe as Molloy had in the previous story, but I did enjoy her work. What a disappointing conclusion to the stint of Dracula being leader of the Cyberons. I know there could be more to expand on here, and I know there probably won’t be more.

Review of Living Fiction by EBP

29 December 2024

This one’s weak. Especially weak. It’s just borrowing public domain footage in a way that isn’t even that interesting, which is a shame as the concept is. I’d like to see this entity again, but maybe in more crafty hands.

Review of Curse of the Cyberons by EBP

27 December 2024

Dracula becomes leader of the Cyberons! This audio drama convinces me that Terry Molloy could read the phone book and make it entertaining, even if the story itself is very basic. Surprisingly violent descriptions of death in here (someone’s head gets crushed) and yet I can’t help but enjoy the idea of a literary icon not only actually existing in the grand scheme of Doctor Who, but also as such a minor part of it.

Review of Portents of Doom by EBP

27 December 2024

Bill Baggs should play more villains. Evil Giles was way more interesting than Baggs's on-screen writing of his own self insert has ever been. The story is fine, another invasion of London from an alien species. Solomon - the Stranger - has been recast and that actor is decent. I have to wonder how Baggs gets actors for these things. It's on the verge of being decent, but the mere fact that this is an improvement over a lot of recent PROBE videos is almost depressing to think about.

Review of Who Discovered America? by EBP

22 October 2024

This review contains spoilers!

Thankfully the Internet Archive's back up, so I somehow wound up reading this one. The Doctor pulls a stunt to convince the Vikings of his "power" similar to what Columbus did with an eclipse. A decent and short read.

Review of The Bidding War by EBP

17 October 2024

If I had a nickel for every time some vital thing that’s a part of the Doctor went up for auction I’d have two nickels. This feels shockingly low.

Review of Secret Agent Man by EBP

17 October 2024

Not super impressed with the Jack Harkness stuff, but I’ve got to admit the hitman erasing people from time thing (or so it seems to be) is neat.

Found this one in a secondhand shop by pure luck and finally got around to reading it. Must learn more about Tara, she seems cool and interesting.

Review of Liberation by EBP

16 October 2024

I wouldn't say it's terrible, but they're certainly not sending their best. Maybe if K9 stopped flying all the time he'd be more useful.

Also, predictable hero-villain connection.

Review of Rise and Fall by EBP

15 October 2024

This one is way more engrossing than I thought it would have been. I usually disregard these Short Trips and the Companion Chronicles. Not anymore. William Russell's narration is incredible and pulls you in.

I want to know more about these horse folk. Every blip we get of them fascinates me. Love the take on religion and mythos here, how we inadvertently study what might not actually be the case. Wow.
