Review of The King’s Demons by Carter_S

6 January 2025

It sure does exist. I went into this with the honest expectation that this was four parts long. Suffice it to say, this story felt a bit bland, and personally, I think it fits better as a story with the Monk. Five's alright here, and it's always nice to have a swordfighting Doctor. I could kind of tell that they didn't like using Kamelion, given how little he actually appeared. The Master was alright, but I get the feeling that this story was planned more as a Monk story that contracts said had to be a Master story. I'm still somewhat confused as to why the Master wants to undo the signing of the Magna Carta, aside from chaos. It's a very skippable story, but at least it doesn't drag.

Review of Enlightenment by Carter_S

4 January 2025

From the too-quick pace of Terminus to the goldilocks of Enlightenment. As a whole, the idea is absolutely spectacular. Ships from throughout human history racing to find Enlightenment is absolutely great, and I'm somewhat surprised we haven't had more 'race' stories since. I liked how they subverted expectations around what Enlightenment actually was, and I do admit that i like how the Eternals were portrayed. As an individual story and as the conclusion to the Black Guardian trilogy, I can seriously recommend Enlightenment. Of course, it's probably even better with the updated effects offered on the box set. The models were absolutely gorgeous as well.

Review of Terminus by Carter_S

3 January 2025

This review contains spoilers!

Well, that sure was a story. Terminus went by quick, even though I watched it in two sittings. A little too quick for my liking. As a whole, this story felt very empty, and ended. I was expecting Episode Four to be packed full of story, since there were still so many threads to be wrapped up. Overall, though, Nyssa's departure scene was sweet, and I could really tell they cared for her. That being said, it does feel slightly tacked on at the end. I definitely feel like this story could've used an extra episode, even if it's focused more around Nyssa and the Doctor trying to help fix Terminus.

Review of Mawdryn Undead by Carter_S

31 December 2024

Ah, Mawdryn Undead. A brilliant story, with the Brigadier back in full force. Well, once he is. I liked Turlough's introduction, and I liked how the Blintovich Limitation Effect is demonstrated, along with the Brigadier's montage bit, especially now that most of the actors in that section have passed away. I thought that Mawdryn was an interesting character, and that the change of stakes was a nice one. I also enjoyed the Black Guardian's tunnel effect, even with the 1980's CGI.

Review of Snakedance by Carter_S

30 December 2024

I'd like to preface this by saying I've never seen Kinda, and I watched the standard effects on the Season 20 Boxset. I found this story went by quickly, and I did enjoy the Mara. I think it's a very clever villain, even if its motive is a bit patchy. Then again, everything simply wants to exist. I also find it unfathomably funny that Martin Clunes was in this one, even if he despises it. I liked the aesthetics of this story, and I do have to admit, I did enjoy this one.

Review of Joy to the World by Carter_S

30 December 2024

This review contains spoilers!

Wow. Okay, that was a fun one. Ncuti was as always a great Doctor, even if he's acting very Moffat-ish. Deliberately provoking Joy was a bit of a dick move, and having come straight from Invasion of the Dinosaurs, the new Dinosaurs were great. However, this special was littered with missed potentials. While using it to essentially time skip the creation of a star was clever, I can't help but feel like it's almost impossible to properly utilize the setting without giving it a properly timey-wimey story. Fifteen spending a year on Earth is very fun, I like the montage. That being said, there will now be three Doctors in 2025. Fourteen in therapy, Fifteen in the Hotel, and Fifteen when we inevitably spend most of Season 2 on Earth. Joy wasn't super likeable, but I did enjoy the COVID allegory. That being said, I will admit the scene where Joy's mother was sweet, but unnecessary. I think that scene was mostly there to elicit a tear-jerker reaction. Also, slight nitpick. Moffat messed up the year. When Joy takes her place as the star of Jesus, it's 0001; thus Jesus would be one, not a newborn. God, I can't believe I just wrote that. Then again, I'm surprised Doctor Who hasn't delved explicitly into religion. Also, another nitpick, everyone pronounces Villengard different to how it is in Series One. Yes, I know it also happened in Boom, but I noticed it in this one.

Review of Arc of Infinity by Carter_S

30 December 2024

I did enjoy this episode. I watched it on the Season 20 Box Set, with the original CGI. It's a quick four-parter that I find builds on Gallifreyan lore, even if they don't have the strange headresses. Overall, the return of Omega (Played by Ian Collier) is a nice link back to the 10th season, which was also an anniversary story. I'd personally have preferred they spend more time on Gallifrey, but I understand that there's not much to do on that planet. Peter Davison did a good job in a dual role, and I would've been surprised at Tegan's return if I watched it live. I also enjoyed the setting of Amsterdam, since it's a place the show doesn't normally go. Still, I enjoyed the mention of Leela. Nice to see she's happily married. For now, anyways...

Review of The Invisible Enemy by Carter_S

29 December 2024

I watched this one yesterday, and quite liked it. As a whole, this story is fast-paced, and I'm surprised Doctor Who's only ever done the 'shrink down and enter an individual' twice on-screen. The Nucleus's presence looks great on camera, even if the creature itself looks a bit silly. I did enjoy the feeling that you'd never know who was infected, but it could've been done a bit better. Overall, I enjoyed this story, and I'd love to see more from the Nucleus. Perhaps I'll have to write one.

Review of Invasion of the Dinosaurs by Carter_S

29 December 2024

This story was pretty good. The actual story was very nice, if a bit badly paced. That being said, I think it could've used a bit more explaining. Most of the cliffhangers are just the Doctor facing a dinosaur, but overall, I quite enjoyed them, for reasons I'll get into later. Pertwee, Sladen, and Courtney are on point here, as is the rest of the UNIT crew. I enjoyed how they got the feeling of not knowing who was on the Doctor's side, and that twist would've surprised me, if I had no prior knowledge of this story. I enjoyed the settings, and the Dinosaurs. Dear Lord, the Dinosaurs. They. Were. Terrible. I love them all with my whole heart. Overall, a very great story to put on that's hard to fault.

Review of The Celestial Toymaker (Animated Reconstruction) by Carter_S

25 December 2024

Jesus. Christ. That was horrifying. But I loved it. The animation was freaky, but I found it worked perfectly. It was extremely trippy, but I found it a quick run. A very nice Christmas present, just not one to watch late at night with the lights low. I enjoyed the animations of the Toymaker's Toys; they legitimately looked like the materials the toys would've been made of. Also, I enjoyed the Spider-Verse style animation for the card characters. TL;DR: a strange watch, but a fun one.
