Review of The Doctor’s Gambit by Azurillkirby

5 July 2025

Absolutely INCREDIBLE atmosphere. There's some really insightful characterization of Steven, and quite possibly the best characterization of Dodo in any medium. I can't believe Big Finish gave this away for free.

Really haunting atmosphere with gripping personal moments that Jacqueline Rayner excels at. The personal moment with Steven during the climax hit so hard.

Review of The Y Factor by Azurillkirby

4 July 2025

Dodo finally gets a Companion Chronicle! She's been such an underdeveloped character, so it's great for her to get this. I like what this story does with her, and I really hope that we get more like this with Dodo.

Review of The White Ship by Azurillkirby

4 July 2025

I hadn't quite realized just how much I missed First Doctor pure historicals in the extended universe, because man, did this one hit me hard. Peter Purves, now in his mid 80s, still doesn't sound like he's aged a day, and he is an excellent narrator.

Review of Vampire Weekend by Azurillkirby

3 July 2025

An incredible start to the new Thirteenth range. The story is captivating, the dialogue is hilarious, and the character dynamics are great. If there was a time for Tim Foley to put on his best, this was it, and he succeeded.

A+.

Review of The Ravencliff Witch by Azurillkirby

3 July 2025

Really great story. The vibes are excellent; it wonderfully captures that spooky, small village feeling that is just so captivating. The characters all fit so so well and have great chemistry.

Review of Blood of the Time Lords by Azurillkirby

2 July 2025

This review contains spoilers!

There are some neat ideas here, but I'm just not that into Gallifrey as a setting.

James Dreyfus' Master also sucks. Am I biased because he's a transphobic f**k? Yes, but that's a good reason to be biased.

Review of Out of Time 1 by Azurillkirby

2 July 2025

10 and 4 have some amazing chemistry together. It's been so long since I finished 10's era of the show, so it's fantastic to hear David Tennant again. This story is great and works to both Doctors' strengths.

Review of The Deadly Assassin by Azurillkirby

1 July 2025

I was *really* into this for the first two episodes, but oh my god the third episode just DESTROYED the pace. One of the worst standalone episodes since The Daleks ep 6. It's otherwise a great serial, but I can't ignore that episode.

Review of Past Lives by Azurillkirby

Cute story. The different characters being brought together don't conflict too much, and every story is made better by putting Rufus Hound's Monk in it.

Review of The Hand of Fear by Azurillkirby

24 June 2025

Another INCREDIBLE Fourth Doctor serial. The directing and cinematography was immaculate, and the writing was extremely compelling. I'm starting to finally see what other people see in Philip Hinchcliffe.

Review of Spectral Scream by Azurillkirby

20 June 2025

Perfectly good novel, and I honestly don't have much negative to say about it, but the one big thing is that it lacked a big hook to get invested in. I was into it, but not that into it.

Review of Exploration Earth by Azurillkirby

19 June 2025

[Watched with fan-animation.]

This sure is an educational story with Four and Sarah. It's better than I would have expected, but it's still just Four telling Sarah how the Earth was formed.

Review of The Masque of Mandragora by Azurillkirby

Really fun one! Not super deep or compelling, but a fun one, nonetheless! I don't have much more to say about it.

Review of Invasion of the Body Stealers by Azurillkirby

17 June 2025

This story kicked ass. Incredible worldbuilding, great characters, and a gripping narrative with plenty of twists and turns. I haven't heard many EU stories with Tom Baker himself yet, but he kills it here.

Review of The Box of Terrors by Azurillkirby

17 June 2025

I like this story a lot, but I have some mixed feelings. It's remarkable that it fits so many things into this story without it feeling crammed, but the narrative kinda lost me in the back third.

Review of Collector’s Item by Azurillkirby

5 June 2025

Like the last one, a lot smaller scale, which I really like. The Fourth Doctor looks around some stores looking for some kind of artifact. Travis is a very fun, skeevy salesman character. Fun time, this one. :)

Review of The Wondrous Box by Azurillkirby

My favorite kind of Short Trip, one that avoids the massive conflict of usual stories to instead tell a smaller scale, smaller scope story. Four and Sarah visit the circus. :)

Review of The Traitor by Azurillkirby

4 June 2025

This review contains spoilers!

[Listened to the audiobook adaptation by Paul Magrs.]

This has a lot more ambition than your usual Annual story. There's an actual concrete message! ...Unfortunately, the message is pretty bad. "These persecuted people need to be imprisoned or else they become murderous MONSTERS!" Woof.

Review of The Savages (Animated Reconstruction) by Azurillkirby

3 June 2025

I previously read the novelization and loved it, and now I love the serial as well. Possibly the most overtly political Doctor Who serial so far, which is surprising since it's from 1966.

Review of Life Anew (AKA A New Life) by Azurillkirby

2 June 2025

A thing I usually dislike a lot about these annuals is how dull their prose tend to be. This story actually has interesting prose. The story is whatever, but I respect this story a lot more than most of these.

Review of The Reality War by Azurillkirby

Feels like the end of an era with all the connections to the previous season, but it was a great end to the era. I am very excited to see where the show goes from here. :)
