Arriving on a planet, the TARDIS crew investigate the new world - a beach, cliffs, but this world is not like other worlds…

The first episode is quite straight forward, much like an opener from the old series. There is some stuff about Hex having feelings for Ace, and the cliffhanger is great.

The second part is more interesting, if you’ve heard the audio ‘Protect and Survive’ this is similar. The Doctor having been separated from Ace and Hex, makes little appearance. With the companions having to survive, possibly forever, and the remains in the caves means its not a good outlook for them.

So yeah I quite enjoyed this one, a little mystery limited cast and things looking bleak..

There is some good interaction between the Doctor and Hex at the end, Hex being angry.

This is part of a series of reviews of Doctor Who in chronological timeline order.

Previous Story: Shadow Planet

I quite like how after complaining about the lack of character stuff in the last story we get a story that is entirely devoted to, well, character stuff. Ace and Hex get trapped on a planet that magically disappears out from under the Doctor's nose a la The Stolen Earth. It's a really great way to explore Ace and Hex's relationship with each other and their view of the Doctor, particularly Hex.

Philip Olivier gives what I think is his best performance yet as Hex (granted I haven't done all of his stuff) and you can really feel the rage and frustration at the Doctor for taking his time rescuing them just to keep the sentient planet alive. It's a really interesting way to challenge the Doctor and quite an interesting story as a whole.

I think the only issue is that as this was made after the fact for the Ace/Hex arc what should be a really important event for Ace and Hex can't really be explored and expanded in any other stories. It leads to Ace being a bit too uncaring about what she's just experienced and she forgives the Doctor a bit too quickly in my eyes.

This review contains spoilers!

Continuing from the final events of "Shadow Planet", "World Apart" takes us on a tense and immersive survival adventure where the two companions of the 7th Doctor, "Ace" and "Hex", are accidentally left behind on a mysterious planet called "Nirvana". Amidst a vast silence, corpses, and messages of despair from those who did not survive, be it through writings or audio recordings - The characters find themselves in a plot that follows lines similar to the famous series "Lost", being incredibly well-developed. The entire initial block of the script is brilliant, especially the passages where Hex reflects deeply on the size of the sea, having a vision of how small we are in relation to the Universe, this will certainly be a "scene" that will leave you very thoughtful. The whole rhythm and narrative drive border on perfection, it joins a great atmosphere with excellent, highly immersive special effects - It's amazing how the dynamics between Hex and Ace improve with each audio, I dare say this would be the pinnacle level for the characters, every minute of the two here is worth gold. Finally, the audio ends causing a great shock to the listener, revealing the real reason why the Doctor did not rescue his companions as soon as possible, generating a bitter atmosphere in the TARDIS along with a brilliant concept involving the planet "Nirvana". In summary, I dare to say that "World Apart" is among the best audios of the 7th Doctor - I highly recommend it.
