Synopsis

The Daleks and the Cybermen form an alliance to kidnap the American Envoy and ruin a peace conference on Earth. The Doctor meets a new companion, a Frenchman called Jason. After they fail to stop the Cybermen taking the US Envoy from a nightclub, they are joined by a singer named Crystal who works there. After a trip to Altair Three and then the Bar Galactica, they meet Madame Delilah but are forced to flee along with a small furry creature called Zog.

The travellers are captured briefly by the Daleks. They navigate the ship through an asteroid field before making a series of short trips, then confront the Dalek Emperor. The Doctor tricks the Emperor into revealing that the Daleks intend to betray the Cybermen and a battle breaks out between the two. Returning to Earth, the Doctor realises the US Envoy is under Dalek influence and programmed to destroy London with a Dalekanium bomb. The Doctor breaks his conditioning and defuses the bomb by putting it in a teapot.

This review is based on Josh Snare's "Doctor Who: The Ultimate Adventure - Restored" (https://youtu.be/pqZNnl-nVlM?si=5q11LQAA3RZvunIR). Frankly, the Big Finish audio adaption does not do this play justice. It needs the spectacle that comes from a play - the wow factor you get when you see something cool on stage. Factoring this in, I felt that this play was quite fun.

MALE ANNOUNCER: Due to the technical nature of the show, and in the interests of safety, may we remind you that the taking of photographs and the use of binoculars is strictly forbidden. Thank you.

(Opening Doctor Who theme music composed by Ron Grainer.)

(The curtain rises. Dalek control room in semi-darkness, with a male villain called KARL dressed mainly in black with a cape, but with five belt straps that go around the chest beneath which is what looks like a black string vest; a silver-suited Cyberleader; and the Emperor Dalek. Imagine a miniaturised version of the Emperor Dalek from The Evil of The Daleks where the two adjacent walls it was attached to have also been miniaturised with it. It does not have a booming voice, and at about seven foot tall is not much bigger than the Cyberman.)

EMPEROR DALEK: Is all prepared?
KARL: My men are ready to leave.
CYBERLEADER: The Cybermen are always ready.
EMPEROR DALEK: Then go and do not fail us. Upon your mission depends the conquest of Earth.
CYBERLEADER: Our communications centre has intercepted an emergency signal, calling the Doctor back to Earth.
EMPEROR DALEK: This was anticipated.
KARL: You're not worried? I hear the Doctor spoiled some of your best schemes in the past.
EMPEROR DALEK: This time the Doctor is part of our plans.
CYBERLEADER: The Doctor is a dangerous enemy. He must be destroyed.
EMPEROR DALEK: We need the Doctor alive. Once he has served his purpose, he will be exterminated. Exterminated. Exterminated!
DALEKS: Exterminate the Doctor! Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!
