From the space lanes terrorised by the rag-tag remnants of the once-mighty Rocket Men, to the empire of the Gorlans, stricken by a terrible civil war. Gaps in space/time, portents of the end of everything. Only three beings might prevent it. The Doctor, a renegade Time Lord from Gallifrey. The Master, another renegade Time Lord from Gallifrey. And another Master, yet another renegade Time Lord from Gallifrey. One Doctor. Two Masters. What could possibly go wrong? In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the character of the Master, BIG FINISH dedicated an entire trilogy focused on the villain with two incarnations, the frightening version of Geoffrey Beevers who had his first appearance on the TV series in the arc "The Keeper Of Traken", and the maniacal incarnation of Alex Macqueen who debuted in the audio "Dominion" from the UNIT spin-off. Before we go into details let's talk about the requirements: Of course, the most recommended thing is to listen to the first two parts "And You Will Obey Me" from the 5th Doctor and "Vampire Of The Mind" from the 6th Doctor, but I recommend listening to "Dominion" which, even though it is not part of the trilogy, will bring even more load of the whole relationship built between the 7th Doctor and Macqueen's Master, especially as it is a four-hour audio involving a high-scale plan by the villain. If you prefer, you can also listen to "The Two Masters" separately, the listener will have no problem understanding the plot, the only consequence is that it won't have the same weight as the complete experience. In my case, I only listened to the first of the trilogy, then jumped to the final story when I knew about the moderate review "Vampire Of The Mind" gets on Time Scales hehe - This is one of those typical adventures that demands a lot of attention, and not even for reasons of complexity, but because of how detailed John Dorney's script is with its sequences, events, twists and concepts, a slip-up is likely that you might lose the thread. I also point out that perhaps there was a lack of a certain dosage from the writer, this because at a certain point in the plot, the story becomes extremely technical where its narrative dynamic basically boils down to the characters talking and explaining their next steps in detail by detail, but do not be mistaken even if it stretches a lot, the writing and the content presented in this middle still maintain quality. Now the biggest highlight goes to the perfect and clear work of Dorney in making a contrast between the two personalities of the Masters. The writer was precisely careful bringing all transparency regarding the different traits of the villains, uniting the sensational performances of the actors making each section unmissable. As for the 7th Doctor, he left a bit to be desired, don't get me wrong, as always the effort of Sylvester McCoy is perfect, I mean really to the influence factor on the events, blatantly the Doctor is just there to be waiting for the final minutes of the audio to solve everything at once. Look, I really like the strategic chess games of the 7th Doctor, whether you like it or not, this makes his incarnation the most unpredictable of the rest, but in few cases do they use this characteristic of the character to apply quick resolutions in plots like: "Look at the Doctor already knew all this and already foresaw everything, solved, finished" unfortunately The Two Masters is more one of those cases. In summary, perhaps this is another case that requires a second listening, it is undeniable that it is a bit difficult to keep all the information in mind. So I assume that subsequent hearings may better convey the details. Overall, it is a very good audio I recommend to all true fans of the Master. Don’t listen to a word he says about me. He’ll make all these terrible claims saying I’ve done this; caused that; murdered these people; eradicated this species, but don’t believe any of it. In reality I am far, far worse. — The Two Masters
