DOCTOR: I can’t tell you if there is a supernatural deity, or whether all we see are the workings of the inhabitants of the universe. A divine plan, or impersonal cause and effect. But I believe, as we wander the emptiness of space, that we must have the faith to believe that for each of us, that for all of mankind, there is a purpose.

— Seventh Doctor, The Pit

DOCTOR: There’s a saying on my planet, which roughly translates as “never trust a Time Lord”.

BLAKE: Even you?

DOCTOR: Especially me. I have lost my innocence.

BENNY: Doctor, are you never afraid of the monsters?

DOCTOR: What monsters?

BENNY: The monsters you meet on your travels: Cybermen, Daleks, you know.

DOCTOR: They aren’t monsters. They’re alien races with their own agendas, plots and dreams. But there are monsters out there, very real monsters. Monsters which shadow us; that are part of our imagination.

BENNY: I said I’m a survivor. That’s me, metal man.

— Bernice Summerfield, The Pit

DOCTOR: My friend Isaac Newton managed to explain the concept of gravity by talking about an apple. I seem to have failed to describe parallel universes by using cheeses.

BLAKE: The next thing you will be telling me is that the moon is made of green cheese.

DOCTOR: The future of mankind? Remember these words – Auschwitz, Stalingrad. Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Just words. Gladys Aylward, Mother Theresa, Albert Schweitzer. Just names. Somewhere between the words and the names lies the future of mankind.

BLAKE: I don’t understand.

DOCTOR: No, neither do I.

BLAKE: I’m sure things can’t be as bad as you think they are. Where are we?

DOCTOR: We are in the deepest bowels of hell.

BLAKE: It could be worse. Waterloo station in the rush hour, for instance. I’d never find my hat there.

BENNY: Perhaps there is something else; out there or in here. But it’s irrelevant. Life is about choice. We make a choice about how we wish to live our lives.

SPIKE: But you must believe in a future life. Is there no‐one you miss, that you want someday to meet again?

BENNY: What a stupid point. What do you know? I can’t believe this. Here I am travelling down this river, having an argument with a toaster about philosophy. I’ll tell you what is real. The Daleks destroying worlds, killing and enslaving. That’s real. Me, I’m a survivor. Now shut up.

DOCTOR: I was loyal to the Time Lords. To my people. But they prognosticated. They pondered. They observed. Do you know the literal translation of the word “Gallifrey” is “they that walk in the shadows”. That’s their problem. They know everything and yet they know nothing. I left Gallifrey because I was bored, and because of something that happened, a long time ago…

— Seventh Doctor, The Pit

DOCTOR: Imagine our universe is a huge cheese, and where we were is another cheese. Are you following it so far?

— Seventh Doctor, The Pit
