The tension is exciting. The worldbuilding is phenomenal. The conflict is ingenious. I do not have anything bad to say about this story; it's just incredible. S. Maybe A+. We now come to the final performance of Caroline John as Liz Shaw before her death four months before this was even released. Caroline John was fantastic both in life and as Liz Shaw which makes me sad we never got more from her in the show. Much as I love the pairing of Three and Jo, Liz was a far better companion in my opinion, a far cry from the usual companion archetypes, and what a story for Caroline to go out on with one of my favourites from The Companion Chronicles. Told through different conversations between Liz and her mother, Emily, throughout the course of Season 7, Liz has noticed a lot of the deaths of certain characters in Season 7 had two things in common, one was that they were all members of the same committee her mother attends, and two is that they all received letters foretelling their deaths. The answer to this mystery lies in a conspiracy that forecasts the end of the world itself. For one last time Caroline John is wonderful as Liz and works brilliantly alongside Rowena Cooper, right from the get-go you instantly buy these two as mother and daughter with Liz’s mother quickly becoming an enjoyable character in an enticing mystery that keeps your interest throughout. The build-up and reveal of what’s causing the deaths and the nature behind Emily’s committee, while still far out in the usual sci-fi way, also feels frighteningly realistic, the sort of thing you’d hear about in government conspiracy theories. This is a must listen for Third Doctor fans, as The Last Post makes for a great love letter to not only Pertwee’s first year but Caroline John’s short-lived but impactful tenure. I don't always feel like listening to a Companion Chronicles, a line that I fell in love with at first, but over time it lost strength due to its detailed narrative style usually reproducing its stories through the narration/story of a specific Companion, thus being a dreary experience compared to the Full Cast audios. In the case of The Last Post, no preparation or patience was needed to follow its excellent plot, this is because James Goss had the great idea to deliver a different narrative dynamic where the communication between the characters is through letters - Besides bringing depth and background information enriching his character, we get to know part of the personal life of Liz Shaw as she updates her day-to-day working for UNIT through letters sent to her mother “Emily Shaw”. She describes her entire journey through the 7th Season detailing her personality and her relationship with the 3rd Doctor and the Brigadier, how the process to prevent the invasion of "plastic men" continues (Spearhead From Space), then she expresses concern for her mother due to a pandemic scenario (The Silurians), also the Doctor's trip to space to negotiate with the ambassadors (The Ambassadors Of Death) and finally she talks about the initial stage of a dangerous excavation (Inferno) - Through the replies to her daughter's letters we get to know more about the day-to-day and the personality of Emily, we see several similar traits from her daughter. Besides this lesson on how to deliver quality Fan Service, James Goss is very careful with the structure of his plot, strategically dedicating the first half of The Last Post to enrich the relationship between mother and daughter, thus delivering to his listener a necessary and significant emotional investment to garner a certain level of involvement and attachment, enough to leave their hearts softened at the end of its first part. The second half is responsible for developing the entire structure previously built, after connecting all the pieces of the puzzle involving scientists receiving letters that predicted the date and time of their deaths - The action begins and Liz starts her race to save the world, she needs to stop the actions caused by a machine called the "Apocalypse Clock", which not only has a life of its own but can also predict the future of any person or event and also determine the future. The Last Post is a beautiful and simple homage to the talented Caroline John, this audio gains more sombre tones and looks sadder when we know the information that this was her last performance, having its release a few months after her death. I can't say if it was intentional, but it ended up being a deserved final tribute to the Liz Shaw era in Doctor Who - By far this is the best Companion Chronicles that I have ever listened to, a masterpiece essential for fans of the Pertwee era and especially the companion.
