Ice ages come and go, continents shift, conditions change. Nature didn’t intend there to be Ankylosaurus or Dimetrodon in the twenty‐first century; they were wiped out long before man first raised a wooden club and said, ooh, last one to kill a woolly mammoth’s a rotten moa egg. Do you really think you and your kind would be around today if dinosaurs still walked the Earth? Yes, humans have mocked nature, wiping out the dodo and the passenger pigeon and the thylacine – but this place doesn’t apologise, it laughs at her even more. Better to die free than to live in a cage.

MARTHA: So, you must have had pets on board the TARDIS before, right?

DOCTOR: You never met Mickey, did you?

DOCTOR: This Time Lord’s neither a damsel nor distressed.

DOCTOR: I don’t miss things. Well, not that sort of thing. Birthdays, I’m terrible with. Socks! I’m always losing socks. Never have enough socks. If you’re ever trying to think what to get me for Christmas, socks is what I’d suggest.

MARTHA: Sometimes I hate people.

DOCTOR: Martha! No, no, no! Hate what some of them do, hate some individuals if you must, hate intolerance and injustice and slaughter and man’s inhumanity to man, but never, never hate people.

GUARD: Stay right where you are!

DOCTOR: Whatever you say. How about we put up our hands too? Would that be a help? Save you having to ask –

GUARD: Shut up!

DOCTOR: Oh, right, yes, didn’t think of that one –

GUARD: Shut up!

MARTHA: So now I’m the person who wiped out the dinosaurs! Was it a comet, was it climate change, no, it was Martha Jones mucking around with an electronic tool that makes a silly noise!
