Synopsis

Stories of the Furies abound across the cosmos: vengeful spirits hounding guilty souls to death. Madame Kovarian taught them to a child raised in fear, trained to kill, and placed inside a spacesuit.

Kovarian knows the universe’s greatest threat, the Doctor must be eliminated. An assassin was created for that purpose.

But if Melody Pond has failed, Kovarian will simply have to try again...

What a phenomenal end to this boxset, developing so much more of River Song's arc in Series 6 and exploring some of the darker ideals in an effective and satisfying way.

How lucky are we to have Alex Kingston in this role? She breaks my heart throughout this story, it's one of the strongest character tales for her. River is written superbly, and that carries through into Kingston's performance and chemistry with the rest of the cast. Her inner motivations are explored in a deep and fascinating way, something we've never really seen of her before, and I think that comes hand in hand with the conflict against Kovarian. The Doctor's absence from this story allows River to blossom - Imagine how the range could prosper if they didn't have to fall back on nostalgia all the time! However, when he is around, his personality is mastered and realistic. Davison and Kingston were just brilliant together, and it's a shame I have to wait until the end of his tenure for the pair to reunite.

Like I said, the conflict between Kovarian and River works perfectly. There are so many deep emotional moments which explore the dynamic of River's upbringing amazingly, and with two stellar actors at the helm, they knock it out of the park. Kovarian's inner turmoil is used effectively and makes for an interesting development, especially as she succumbs to River's manipulation - I think you can see a lot of Kovarian in River in this story, which is quite tragic actually. It's nice to finally get an end to her story, because we never got that in the main show, and I think that this is a brilliant culmination for her time on Doctor Who.

The setting was great in that we explore more of River's childhood, and the station itself makes for an interesting base-under-siege location, but with more of an emotional tie to it. There were a lot of unique rooms explored, like the training room, the cells and of course, River's bedroom.

River's sisters have such an interesting arc throughout this story. You can tell that they're related to her, with their courage, and have a lot to do. It's so interesting to see River interact with them just as she wished to in The Lady in the Lake. Brooke's surprisingly the standout, managing to defeat Kovarian, become independent, no longer being jealous of River and making her own way in the Universe. I hope we can explore more of this dynamic again, because it'd be great to see more of this family unit, especially in the aftermath of escaping Kovarian's torture and how much of an effect freedom has had on them.

The score, once again, wonderfully unique, inspired and suits River Song so well.

Favourite Line: "What are clubcard points?"

This is the finale we deserved from Series 6 - All the characters are used amazingly, the emotion is potent and it ends the arc in such a powerful way.
