Bit of a pointless runaround, but great in terms of the TARDIS crew. The Doctor is presented as a fun detective, and can't wait to solve the mystery of the deaths. He takes command easily (a bit too easily) and as he delves further into the Moray Rose's investigation, it leads us into a very compelling story. However, this was let down by what happened to Leela in Part 2, as that took precedence and meant that the investigation became the side plot, when it was easily the far more interesting of the two. Not to say that Leela hunting the Doctor wasn't captivating, but it wasn't executed very well, even with Louise Jameson being a star as ever. Despite this, the conversation between the Doctor and Leela near the end was very sweet, and you can tell that the pair are starting to make up. I don't think Big Finish understand this Master well enough to write stories about him. This incarnation of the Master is meant to be dying and crispy, not up and about, disguising himself as inspectors. However, I do like that he gets other people to do his dirty work for him, such as Leela. The Salonu are generic bug-eyed monsters (no pun intended) and it's shame, because they were set up well in the first part, but again were overshadowed by Leela's hunt. Calvert was a developed character and there was some great moments between him, and I'm surprised he died so soon - and in such a disturbing way! To conclude, it's not the best, and I hope the Master doesn't return for a while - it hasn't been long since the Oseidon Adventure and I don't want him done to death. I've realised I have an all-or-nothing relationship with Nicholas Briggs' writings; when there's a story of his ahead, I immediately hope it could be something I really like, or it might be something that disappoints me with that typical messy writing. This comes into play in The Evil One, but if it weren't for the great development of the 4th Doctor's companion, Leela, I would certainly be here giving it a rating below 5. Speaking of its plot, we again have a mess mixed with some strange elements - The Master has teamed up with a kind of giant Mantis robots called Salonu, from what I understand the villain is using nanotechnology to steal ships and disintegrate the crew. Later on, he takes control of Leela's mind by making the companion turn against the Doctor and making her believe she was responsible for her father's death, all this is caused by a telepathic signal coming from a device that somehow the Master implanted in the Doctor's TARDIS...Yes, exactly what you're thinking...WTF!! LOL In addition to this weird plot, I found that Beevers' Master didn't receive the depth we see in some other stories; he is just the big bad villain with a "You Will Obey me" here and a "You Will Obey me" there. At the end of it all, we have a scene with very strong emotional weight, maybe the most sensitive will shed tears from their eyes. In summary, even though the audio cast presents wonderful performances, unfortunately, its plot is strange and quite weak. (Translation generated by AI, so mistakes are possible). I enjoyed the rogue employee from the insurance company who makes every effort to help the doctor - whether or not it helps his career. It's a shame he disappears when the master turns up. There is a nice bit of character development at the end for Leela but it’s disconnected from the story. Another okay script and enjoyable performance from this 4th Doctor Adventure. 15thDoctor View profile Like Liked 1
