[The main hall]

(The Space-Time Manipulator powers up. K9 enters and his scans identify the threat as a black or white hole. Starkey runs in behind him.)

STARKEY: Whoa. Professor! It’s doing it again!

(Jorjie, Darius and Gryffen enter.)

GRYFFEN: That isn’t natural.
STARKEY: What isn’t?
K9: A black hole and a white hole merging. Astrophysics suggests it’s dangerous.
GRYFFEN: Very, very dangerous.

[Blue room]

(Thorne enters.)

[The laboratory]

GRYFFEN: Very well. That is how we’ll proceed. Darius, you go straight to June and tell her what’s going on.
DARIUS: Really too dangerous to use the vidcom?
K9: This phenomenon has the potential to affect the entire planet.
GRYFFEN: We can’t risk any chance of the news being intercepted.
JUNE: So, the fate of the world is in me hands. Right, June.

(Darius leaves.)

K9: We must maintain a watch on the STM. If the two holes align, it will mean catastrophe. Vigilance must be our password. I have to go.
GRYFFEN: Go?
STARKEY: What about vigilance being our password?
K9: I have something urgent I must attend to.
JORJIE: As opposed to protecting the world?
K9: According to my calculations, the world has at least twenty more minutes, by which time I should be back.
STARKEY: Should?
K9: What I have to do is a matter of life and death. This unit’s life and death. My regeneration unit.

[London Dome]

(K9 arrives. He finds a device which he identifies as a non-functioning Space-Time Manipulator of enormous size.)

THORNE: Well, well. What a surprise.
K9: My regeneration unit has been activated. It could hardly be a surprise if I come looking for it.
THORNE: Quite right. No surprise at all. And you haven’t come looking. I summoned you. I want you to do me a favour.
K9: Improbable.
THORNE: That deep space phenomenon I know you and Gryffen have been monitoring. It’s a gateway. Something is coming.
K9: What?
THORNE: An invasion.

[The main hall]

STARKEY: K9, respond! K9! There’s nothing at all. It’s like all communications are down.
GRYFFEN: They probably are. As the holes get closer, they’re affecting our atmosphere.
JORJIE: Professor, what will happen if they do overlap?
GRYFFEN: They’ll create a stupendous vortex of antigravity. Anything within its reach will be sucked into oblivion.
STARKEY: Is there anything we can do?

[London Dome]

K9: An invading army, massing on the other side of the galaxy?
THORNE: Correct.
K9: And may this unit ask how you know about it?
THORNE: The Department has many sources at its disposal.
K9: And does the Department have a plan to stop this invasion?
THORNE: That’s where you come in. I need you to stabilise the gateway so we can mount a pre-emptive strike.
K9: Impossible. Such stability can only be achieved by a temporal stabiliser and Professor Gryffen has the only one on this planet securely locked away.
THORNE: We’ve developed a weapon. A super soldier created from the DNA of every species we’ve encountered. Jixen, Anubian, Meron, you name it.
K9: And implanted with my regeneration tech. This unit would like it back, please.
THORNE: But it’s your small contribution to the weapon that will save this planet.
K9: A weapon that cannot possibly work.
THORNE: Well, his cloaking tech seems to work. He’s been in this room all along.
K9: So, he is the huge invisible pile of DNA in the corner, then?
THORNE: How could you detect him?
K9: I am K9.
THORNE: Meet Project Trojan.

(Trojan becomes visible, a giant hybrid of various species.)

[The main hall]

(Gryffen, Starkey and Jorjie run upstairs.)

JORJIE: Is it my imagination or are they closer together?
GRYFFEN: It’s not your imagination.
STARKEY: Professor, you have to think about using the stabiliser.
GRYFFEN: You know I can’t. It’s alien technology. I have no idea what it’s capable of.
JORJIE: We need K9.
GRYFFEN: Oh, yes, fine idea. His knowledge of quantum temporal dynamics would prove invaluable at the moment. Where is that mutt!
STARKEY: We have to find him. We can’t wait.
GRYFFEN: No, it’s too dangerous. I tracked him as far as the London Dome before communications went down. It’s clear across the city.
STARKEY: Then how are we going to get him back? Come on, professor. We’ve dealt with some dangerous situations before.
GRYFFEN: This is bigger than all of them, by a considerable margin.
JORJIE: Then we’ll be eve more careful than normal.
STARKEY: By a considerable margin.

(Starkey touches Gryffen’s shoulder and leaves with Jorjie.)

GRYFFEN: Stay safe. I’m rather fond of you all.
STARKEY: (OC) Don’t worry, professor.

[London Dome]

K9: This unit is famous for his manners but I will ask you only once more for my regen unit, then I will have to insist. (Trojan roars.) Next time you build a super soldier, may I suggest you incorporate some breath mint DNA? Since you won’t meet my request, this unit is forced to get huff.

(K9 fires his cannon at the Trojan, but the shot bounces back and knocks him to the floor.)

THORNE: You recall the Jixen’s ability to deflect and enhance photon beams.

[June’s office]

(June is in an office at the Department Research Division, stamping documents. Darius is shown in by a CCPC.)

DARIUS: Yeah, always a treat.
CCPC: That’s enough out of you, sunshine.

(The CCPC closes the door.)

JUNE: Darius. How nice to see you.
DARIUS: Yeah, you too, Inspector.
JUNE: Actually, it’s Constable. Lomax busted me down when I went against his orders. Now I’m in charge of cataloguing.
DARIUS: Oh, yeah? Always nice to have a hobby.
JUNE: What can I do for you?

[Street]

(Starkey and Jorjie are running after a group of CCPCs.)

JORJIE: They’re all heading to the Dome.
STARKEY: Must be something big going on there.
JORJIE: Any chance it doesn’t involve K9?

[London Dome]

(K9 cannot see.)

K9: Mobility circuits not responding. I can’t move. Remote connection in progress. Remote connection to what?

(K9’s sight returns. He is connected to a machine.)

THORNE: You’ll see. The reprogramming should be kicking in about now. You’ve taken to the connection very well.

(Thorne walks away.)

K9: What connec… Remote connection to STM complete. Commence spacetime portal generation.

(Thorne’s STM powers up.)

[The main hall]

(An alarm sounds.)

GRYFFEN: A portal. It’s exporting energy.

[London Dome]

(Energy is firing into the sky.)

K9: This portal is dangerous.
THORNE: Yes, it is.
K9: The gravitational forces…
THORNE: Oh, it’s not being sucked into the vortex that this planet should be worried about. It’s what’s going to be coming through it.

[Hallway]

(Starkey and Jorjie are running after the CCPCs.)

JORJIE: This place is massive. He could be anywhere.
STARKEY: Anywhere they’re going is my guess.
JORJIE: Something big is happening.
STARKEY: Very big. Let’s go.

(Jorjie takes Starkey’s hand.)

JORJIE: Remember what Gryffen said when we left, about being fond?
STARKEY: Yeah.

(They lean in to kiss. Arriving CCPCs interrupt.)

CCPC: Oi, you two. Invading each other’s personal space. Halt! Stop there!

(Starkey and Jorjie run.)

[London Dome]

K9: This unit fails to understand how opening a larger portal will prevent an invasion.
THORNE: Excellent point.
K9: It makes the arrival of an invading army even easier. You are working with the invaders.
THORNE: Correct, with a little help from you.
K9: I have told you the portal is too unstable to transfer such a force.
THORNE: And I told you that’s where Gryffen comes in.
K9: The professor will never use this technology.
THORNE: Even to save his planet?

[The main hall]

GRYFFEN: Starkey, come in! Darius, please! Jorjie! June! Come in! I can’t let my planet be destroyed.

(Gryffen gets the temporal stabiliser from a safe.)

[June’s office]

JUNE: No, it can’t be right. Our intelligence division would know about it.
DARIUS: Department and intelligence aren’t two words that go together usually.

(Two CCPCs burst in.)

CCPC: Oi, you two.
JUNE: How dare you! This is a private…
CCPC: Silence, missus. Department personnel no longer have any authority.
JUNE: What? By whose au…?
CCPC: That’s classified, missus. Subjugate all humans. Surrender your verometer. You no longer have any authority.

(June holds out her verometer.)

JUNE: Oh, and you’ll probably be wanting this too. (June picks up a large weapon and fires at the CCPCs.) I don’t like being called “missus”.
DARIUS: Yeah, I’ll remember that.

[Hall]

(June and Darius peek out of a door. The CCPCs are rounding up everybody.)

CCPC: Subjugate all humans. Subjugate all humans. Subjugate all humans.
JUNE: Come on.

(June and Darius head out.)

[London Dome]

(Starkey and Jorjie arrive at the STM.)

THORNE: Master Starkey! And little Ms Turner.

(Jorjie coughs.)

JORJIE: Demon breath. Time to think about a new brand of toothpaste.
STARKEY: I was just about to suggest the same thing to you.

(Trojan appears.)

THORNE: I see you’ve lost your game of hide and seek with Trojan.
K9: Young master. Sorry.
STARKEY: What have you done to him!?
THORNE: Put him to good use. Now, hush! We’re about to receive company.
K9: Not unless the professor deploys the stabiliser.
THORNE: And if he doesn’t, the entire planet will disappear in about thirty seconds! But the good professor is so predictable.

[The main hall]

(Gryffen removes the stabiliser from its box and puts it into the STM controls.)

GRYFFEN: Safe. (An alarm sounds.) No!

[London Dome]

K9: Warning. Maximum danger.

(Numerous Korven emerge from the portal.)

STARKEY: Korven.
KORVEN: We claim this planet in the name of the Supreme Leader of the Korven and its invincible army, Lomax.
JORJIE: Lomax?
THORNE: (unclear) your super soldier is ready, Supreme Leader Lomax.
LOMAX: Let the conquest begin.
JORJIE: Thorne, how could you? You’re a traitor to your entire planet.
THORNE: I’m not strictly from this planet.

(Thorne raises his hand, which has transformed into that of a Meron.)

STARKEY: You’re a Meron?
THORNE: Yes. The Korven implanted Meron DNA in me.
LOMAX: Korven were the Merons’ allies in their war against the Jixen. We needed an ally here on Earth to prepare the way for us.
STARKEY: I’m sure you took a lot of convincing.
THORNE: I’ve always made it a policy to be on the winning side and, believe me, they are the winning side.

[The main hall]

GRYFFEN: What have I done? The question is, what am I going to do now?

[Stairway]

JUNE: Darius. (She leads the way up the stairs.) The mansion. Jorjie’s there. We need to get back.

[The laboratory]

(A screen is playing a message from Gryffen.)

GRYFFEN: (Recording) This is Professor Alistair Gryffen. My friends are in terrible danger and I’m unable to contact a single one. I believe I’m their only hope of survival and perhaps that of the entire human race. Me, an agoraphobic reclusive shut-in. So, if you’re watching this, it means that I didn’t just sit here in this house doing nothing as I have done for so long. It means that Alistair Gryffen finally stood up and did something. Today, I don’t just sit where I am. I hit the bottom and there’s nowhere to go but up.

[The main hall]

(Wearing a suit and tie, Gryffen opens the front door.)

GRYFFEN: And out.

(He goes outside.)

[London Dome]

(Lomax looks at K9.)

LOMAX: Where do the batteries go?
STARKEY: Let him free of that pod and you’ll see some battery.
THORNE: You know he won’t hurt a human, even a part-one. The Korven were able to reprogram him to take out the Jixen but that infernal Gryffen…
JORJIE: Reprogram?
LOMAX: When he first arrived on this planet through our STM.
THORNE: It is Korven technology, remember.
STARKEY: But why would you want to destroy Gryffen?
LOMAX: He is the only one who could prevent the invasion.
JORJIE: Gryffen? Are we talking about the same guy here? Likes tea and crumpets?
THORNE: He alone knows the code to terminate the portal permanently but, as it’s a voice activated code, he’d have to be here to deliver it in person. We all know the chances of that happening.

[Street]

(Gryffen runs down the street. He checks his fob watch.)

[London Dome]

JORJIE: You’re utterly despicable!
THORNE: Oh, you say that to all the henchmen of ruthless alien invaders.
LOMAX: Our army’s arrival is imminent. Activate the terraforming pods!

(The Korven do so.)

K9: Starkey.
STARKEY: K9, we haven’t got much time. Can’t you terminate the program?
K9: Negative. Korven override program too strong. Only possibility: get a message to the professor to use portal termination code.
JORJIE: But all communications are down.
K9: This unit is connected to the STM. That’s a signal.
JORJIE: Back to the mansion?
K9: Using my communication unit, we may be able to send a message back.
STARKEY: Professor, can you hear me? Professor?

[The main hall]

STARKEY: (Over communicator) If you’re there, use the code. You’ve got to use the termination code. Professor? Professor?

(Darius and June get to the controls.)

JUNE: Starkey? Starkey?

[London Dome]

THORNE: Even if you got through, Gryffen would never terminate the STM. Without it, he would never see his precious family again. What were their names again?

(Gryffen enters.)

GRYFFEN: You want to know their names? Their names were Eleanor, Mina and Jacob. Omega, sigma, theta, ohm!
THORNE: Wait, I don’t recall those last four names. Were they pets?
GRYFFEN: No, Thorne, you imbecile. That’s the voice-activated termination code. Omega, Greek for the end. Sigma, theta, ohm.
THORNE: No!

[The main hall]

DARIUS: It’s going to blow!

(Darius pulls June down to the floor.)

[London Dome]

K9: Remote link severed. Connection to the STM lost.
GRYFFEN: Jorjie, Starkey, get down! (The portal pulls in Lomax and the Korven and explodes, then implodes.) The STM’s gone.
THORNE: You’ve meddled for the last time. Trojan, destroy them! Start with the dog.

(Trojan appears and throws K9 against the wall.)

STARKEY: K9, fire!
K9: Subvisual sensors incapacitated. Hard to shoot what I cannot see.
JORJIE: Starkey, remember the stench of that thing’s breath?
STARKEY: K9, you’re a dog! Follow your nose!
K9: I am not a dog. However, switching to olfactory sensors.

(K9 fires. Trojan cries.)

THORNE: What happened to his defences?
K9: I implanted my regeneration unit to mix mecha-chronal technology with organic DNA.
THORNE: Finish him!
K9: Power levels 5%.
JORJIE: K9, fire again!
K9: Power down.

(K9 starts powering down. He lets out a sound.)

THORNE: Oh, dear. The puppy’s crying.
GRYFFEN: That’s not a cry. It’s a shriek.
STARKEY: A Jixen battle shriek.
THORNE: Jixen?
GRYFFEN: He’s calling the Jixen to do battle against…
STARKEY: The Meron.

(Trojan cries.)

THORNE: Stop! Stop! I command you!
JORJIE: What’s happening to it?
GRYFFEN: I believe the Meron and Jixen DNA implanted in the Trojan are fighting each other. A creature at war with itself. What do you think of that, K9?
STARKEY: K9? K9!?

(Starkey and Jorjie run over to K9.)

THORNE: Don’t you imagine for a minute that you’ve seen the last of me.
JORJIE: Thorne!
THORNE: What?

(Thorne turns to see Trojan stood over him. Gryffen looks away. There is a thud.)

STARKEY: This isn’t good.

[The main hall]

(June wakes up on the floor with Darius unconscious on her.)

JUNE: Awkward.

(Darius wakes up and gets up.)

DARIUS: Oh, um… Are you okay then, Constable?
JUNE: Fine, yes. Nothing broken anyway. You? Any side effects?
DARIUS: No, I’m fine.
JUNE: You saved my life. Thank you.
DARIUS: I’m just the hired help. It’s what I do.
JUNE: No, there’s much more to you than that. If the Department survives all this, I could use someone like you in my ranks.
DARIUS: Really? Awkward.

(Jorjie arrives.)

JORJIE: Mum.
JUNE: Jorjie, thank goodness. What is it? Jorjie, what is it?

(On the ground floor, the unmoving K9 is lying in the middle of the room.)

GRYFFEN: There’s nothing I can do.
STARKEY: What do you mean, nothing?
DARIUS: I mean, come on. You’re the prof.
GRYFFEN: K9 exhausted his core energy.
JORJIE: Protecting us.
STARKEY: Just like he did when he first arrived here.
GRYFFEN: The difference is, this time he doesn’t have his regeneration unit. He only has moments of power left.
DARIUS: Yeah, but he can self-repair. He’s done it before.
GRYFFEN: Not this time.
DARIUS: But we always win. K9 always wins. That’s how it goes.
GRYFFEN: Not this time. I’ll leave you in peace.

(Gryffen and June leave.)

DARIUS: K9, mate. You’re the coolest thing that ever happened to me.
JORJIE: Remember all the times I tried to teach you how to have fun? I’ve had a lifetime of fun since I met you. I’ll never forget you.
STARKEY: You’re right, K9. You’re not a dog. You’re my best friend. I used to think I was brave. You’ve shown me what it’s like to be fearless. I’m going to miss you, mate.
K9: Yes, young master.

(K9 shuts down. Starkey takes off his jacket and puts it over him.)

STARKEY: You’re a good dog.

(The regeneration unit appears in Starkey’s hand.)

STARKEY: It’s the regen unit.

(It disappears.)

DARIUS: Where’d it go?
JORJIE: Search!

(They start looking around.)

DARIUS: It was right in your hand.
STARKEY: Yeah, I’m aware of that.
JORJIE: It doesn’t matter. It’s not important.
DARIUS: Yeah, no, that’s right. Stand up for him.
JORJIE: I’m not standing up for him.

(K9 moves under the jacket.)

STARKEY: Look. K9? K9?

(K9 looks up. The jacket is pulled back.)

K9: Affirmative! (Starkey removes the jacket. K9 has regenerated and now has a collar. Gryffen and June return.) This unit’s regen unit has homed back to me as per its programming. This unit feels… frisky.
STARKEY: So, we’re back in business, K9?
K9: Affirmative, young master. (He flies upwards.) Affirmative!
