LEELA: This isn’t the end. Romana will hunt you down. They will call you back to Gallifrey.

MASTER: Oh, my poor child, they won’t. Do you really think they can just click their fingers and I’ll come running? I allowed myself to be summoned because I knew if they had reason to recall me, things would have to be very grave indeed, and that usually involves a devastating secret. A secret now only I shall know.

LEELA: I will haunt you, Master. Do not think that I won’t, if you are to end my life.

MASTER: My dear Leela…

LEELA: I am not dear to you.

MASTER: My dear, dear Leela, a few words outside, if you’d indulge me.

FINNIAN: Do we? Because I look at you now and I think, she’s no longer a fighter. You may have been a warrior once, but now? Now all you do is talk. You’re just another boring politician, happy to sit back and watch while everyone else is sacrificed.

LEELA: You do not know me.

FINNIAN: No? Then prove me wrong. How far would you go in the name of peace? How much blood is on your hands? What difference have you made to the Time War here and now?

MASTER: I am usually referred to as the Master. The woman accompanying me is called Leela. We’ve only just been reacquainted. When we first knew one another we weren’t exactly friends. In fact, we were enemies, hostile to one another, but with a grudging respect.

FINNIAN: So which of you is good and which one’s bad?

MASTER: That depends on your point of view.

MASTER: Ignore the girl and tell me. Who are you?

LEELA: I am not a girl.

MASTER: Oh, true, and yet still you waste our time with idle chatter.

ROMANA: The Master and Leela have history. I think they may almost respect one another in a strange way. Besides, Leela travelled with the Doctor. If she can survive that, trust me, she can survive anything. She’ll be fine.

— Romana II, The Devil You Know

ROMANA: I offer you the whole of time and space, yours to travel for as long as we have it. Help us defeat the Daleks, Master. Help us to win this war, and I promise you can go anywhere and anywhen, no questions asked.

— Romana II, The Devil You Know

NARVIN: Things were different then. He was different. But trust me, whatever deal you make, whatever promises you may offer, he’ll betray you at the earliest opportunity. And not just you, but everyone close to you. Whatever it takes for him for him to come out on top.

ROMANA: He is the Master. What else would you expect?
