Bleak, but utterly compelling! Peter Purves does the Doctor brilliantly.

Diferente de muitas histórias Daleks temos aqui as criaturas sendo instrumentos menos contundentes e mais astutas com dimensões e inteligência além daquele mesmo clichê de “Exaterminate! gritos e lasers”.
Conhecemos a gelada cidade "Winter" onde seus habitantes são reféns de seus serviços em uma fábrica focada em procriar os saleiros malignos. Sua população foi manipulada acreditando que os Daleks são seres bons contribuindo com imensas quantidades de alimentos e produtos sendo benéficos para sua economia. Após terem um contato inicial, o Doutor, Vicki e Steven descobrem que tudo isso está vinculado a um instituto científico que acolhe jovens mentes que ao passar do tempo acabam como desaparecidos. É aqui que entra a vilã Karna, uma maníaca psicopata obviamente aliada aos Daleks.

Karna: "Por que eu estou fazendo isso?...Porque estou cansada das pessoas, cansada dessa cidade, cansada da rotina, cansada de tudo, eu quero que tudo isso acabe e todo mundo tenha o seu fim, eu poderia te queimar até a morte agora mesmo Doutor"...DUDE!! isso é a definição do que é ser mau.

Além de um ótimo andamento narrativo, o áudio executa acertos cirúrgicos em suas aplicações de reviravoltas, elas são muito inteligentes sempre alimentando o interesse do ouvinte e mantendo sua história envolvente a cada minuto. A química entre os três personagens Doutor, Vicki e Steven é absolutamente encantadora, cada um deles possui sua utilidade muito significativa para o decorrer da história. Eu amei a forma como o Peter Purves imitou e reproduziu o 1° Doutor, é claro que ainda está bem longe de atingir um timbre bem semelhante - Mas nesse caso relevamos, pois tudo soa mais como uma homenagem carinhosa ao icônico William Hartnell do que de fato alguém querendo chegar a uma tonalidade perfeita.

We journey over to The Early Adventures with The Dalek Occupation of Winter and the writing debut of David K. Barnes, as first impressions go Mr Barnes gets a massive thumbs up from me and between this and another story written by him I'll get to soon, he may well be on his way to becoming one of my favourite Big Finish writers.

The Early Adventures was a series that focused solely on the first two Doctors and presented themselves as a mixture of full cast and narrated, in a lot of ways mimicking the 60s vibe of listening to one of their lost episodes back when the BBC’s policy for archiving was code for “toss it in a fire”.

The TARDIS lands on the planet Winter which as you can guess from the name is a world locked in an endless Summer of course! But in all seriousness, the planet’s inhospitably cold climate makes it impossible for a civilisation to develop and yet develop one has, as the Doctor, Vicki and Steven find themselves in the midst of a city in celebration as the people of Winter celebrate the graduation of their finest students as they prepare to spend the rest of their lives locked away in the research centre where the citizens receive freshly grown fruits. All thanks to their generous benefactors, their friends even from another world. The people live freely and happily under the watchful eye of their Dalek occupants in return for the construction of thousands of Daleks to be sent out into the stars where the Daleks hope to no doubt “deliver aid to other worlds”.

There are of course plenty of the Dalek stories that toy with the idea of the Daleks putting on a friendly façade and keeping their true intentions hidden, but The Dalek Occupation of Winter takes it to a new level where the Daleks seem to have conquered this planet and yet they don’t impose their cruelty on anyone, nobody is afraid of the Daleks and are quite happy to work for them. David K Barnes presents a Dalek story that seems on the surface to be your typical Doctor liberates planet from Dalek rule, but he throws in so many twists and turns to the plot and characters to the point where you can’t really be sure of where the story is going. While the story reaches it’s expected result, it’s done so in a very bleak and bittersweet way as the Doctor’s main conflict isn’t even with the Daleks themselves, but rather those who are well aware of what the Daleks are capable of but still continue to be complicit in their evil in order to maintain peace and happiness among the population. It’s a story that tackles the complacency of living under a dictatorship and how easy it becomes to make it part of your everyday life, or even those who understand how wrong it is but have lost all hope for change.

The Dalek Occupation of Winter is a fantastically depressing and uncompromising story that stands as not only one of the best First Doctor stories but one of my favourite Dalek stories of all time.

This was a pretty remarkable audio I quite enjoyed and would recommend. The Dalek Occupation of Winter does a lot of plot threads from other Doctor Who stories, especially Victory of the Daleks, Blood of the Daleks, and even Daleks in Manhattan, but I think is more polished than any of those other stories. With a lot more focus, and an excellent performances from the likes of Peter Perves, Robert Daws, and Sara Powell, this was a great audio I think definitely worth anyone's time.

What I like most about it is that the Dalek Occupation of Winter feels like it could be on the level of something like classic serials such as The Daleks or The Chase, but the Dalek Occupation of Winter manages to stand out in little ways that it works as a great additional story - not a remake of any previous Dalek work, exactly, but something nice and standalone that works really well if you are familiar with the classic Dalek adventures of the original series. This informs stuff like the Doctor, Steven, and Vicki's individual reactions when seeing the Daleks, all of which I think is done well.

The Daleks themselves are really creepy and awful in this tale. They remind me a lot of their horror-heavy earlier appearances. You get a sense of their brutality not just in the dread our main characters experience at just the sight of them, but they also do some fun stuff with their mutant forms along the way. Still, it does feel a little like we've done a lot of this content before - we've seen these characters even in the guests, who fall into a lot of what I'm recognizing more as Big Finish tropes, especially around Majorian's character, and there are little things along the way that feel a little pointless, like Vicki's part of the story here which is a little shallow and goes for long periods of time without much development.

Still, I enjoyed myself more than I didn't. Winter the colony was a great setting, a little island of human life on the edge of reality, so cold it can barely support life. I get why things seem desperate here, and there is a sense that these people just aren't kind or warm. It's a great story thematic to the season of winter, to be sure, and a lot of little details like that go to making this audio play pretty special, even if it does have a few limitations.

Love the start of this story Vicki mentioning her farther was a nice touch and love how this feels like a missing episode or an official mini series of the s2.5 era each twist and turn pulls you in too highly recommend Peter and Maureen are at top form as Steven 1st n Vicki and all the side characters you love and the villians you love to hate again highly recommend for dalek lovers and for Steven Vicki n 1st doctor lovers
